The exact same height as well (though I'm struggling a little on whether that's also relevant or not...) Difference between a loan player to add some quality from the Premier League, than a costly permanent addition from League One to directly replace our best player. IMO. With transfers, as with many things in life, context is everything. No two players are the same and very rarely are players situations ever the same. Whilst it is true that JCH is an ageing player, it's more meant in the context that Rovers have a fairly clear policy of signing permanent players with high ROI potential. Mattyblue Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 (edited) The fabled ‘ROI’ model. Been hearing about it for years now, AA aside, are we actually ever going to see it in action? Or are we carrying on with the ‘buy low (well apart from BBD and SG), let go for nowt’ approach? Edited January 7, 2023 by Mattyblue 7 Quote

What a stupid argument for not signing a goalscorer in his prime. 1 Quote

Cole was a goal machine, but he was infamous for needing a hatful of chances before he scored. If you stuck prime Cole in this team he'd look shite. I think we have good strikers (for this division), good defenders and keeper. But a woeful midfield. Fix that in this window and we will get into the playoffs. If we don't it'll be a midtable finish imo. What we lack is any kind of service from out wide. Any width is provided by forwards who then can't get on the end of their own cross. It's a daft system unless you have wing backs bombing up and hitting the byline. Ours don't. We either need genuine wingers to play the wide roles or better wing backs. Either way its where our issues lie. Edited January 7, 2023 by Wing Wizard Windy Miller 4 Quote

And most of the chances he got was because he was in the right place at the right time. The ‘five chances to score a goal’ was a myth spouted by Hoddle to justify not picking him. You rarely put a ball in the box and thought ‘why is no one there with him in the team’. I was genuinely surprised how good Cole was. His all round game was excellent. That might have come with experience as he was approaching the twilight if his career but he was a bloody good forward. 12 Quote

Now they're out of sight for us - we're literally begging for the scraps off their table this transfer window with JVH. Sadly they're a fantastically run club. I was at the game when they had to get a result to stay up. It was the only year that the league had changed the rules from goal difference to goals scored to decide league positions. Hereford went down with a better goal difference. Quote

Wheelton Blue Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 The winner in the Worthington Cup final is one of my absolute top Rovers moments. Was bedlam behind that goal when it went in. 5 Quote
Norbert Rassragr Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I hope we get on with any transfers in good time, and not sit on our hands until the last hours. I'd get rid of Hurst, and maybe Morton if we have to play him every game he is fit. The latter depending if we can get a tough midfielder with drive and leadership qualities. Quote
roverandout Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 We've had some incredible strikers over the years. Going back 30 years, and yes some were past their prime but shearer, yorke Sutton, Cole, Fowler, Bellamy, dahlin, sukur, roque santa cruz, Mccarthy, Gallagher. Now we have players like hirst and Sam Gallagher 2 Quote
