Raya is a great option for all the clubs chasing him. Wages wise he would offset the cost of the transfer. De Gea for example is apparently on something close to 400k per week. Say they bought Raya and paid him 120k per week. That's a 14.5 million per year saving.

He's an excellent goalkeeper, still at a good age and with 18 months left on his contract it brings the price down massively. He also ticks the box for a homegrown player. Importantly for us is the possible competition for his signing increasing his worth. Brentford will very easily be able to point to his sell on clause as a reason to hold out for a bit more. I can see him going for between 25-30 million if the interest is genuine from all those clubs.

If Brentford really squeeze those clubs, it could see us bringing in an extra 5 million. Whether or not that goes straight into a transfer kitty to be reinvested, it will give a major boost in providing flex regarding FFP.

Losing Brereton for either free or for a pittance of his potential worth, it could be a huge get out of jail free card for us. Let's just pray we don't get another Josh King situation whereby he went into the last year of his deal, on the verge of a major money move, only for it to fall through and us miss out on a windfall.

Beginning to run away with myself now, but say we sold Diaz cut price, got a Raya windfall and brought in Porteous, Undav and a central midfielder. Follow that with some shrewd additions in the summer window and our squad is looking far stronger, more balanced and crucially, no more big assets on the verge of leaving us for free. A squad filled with assets and transfer windows where we are looking for the final pieces of the jigsaw, rather than cobbling a squad together.

That’s a lot of pieces to fall into place in less than 2 weeks. The longer everything drags on, the more likely a couple of last day uninspiring loans becomes.

Gelhardt gone to Wigan.

Mr Broughton under serious Pressure here.

Not even convinced we were ever seriously in for him. We do this every window, get linked with some genuinely good options and then rush in some complete nobodies on deadline day.

The fact that the likes of Wogan, Preston and Blackpool can get deals over the line in a timely manner just hammers hom how much of a clown show the club is these days.

That said, the fact that the only real concrete links seem to be for positions we don't need immediately is very worrying.

Might be in a minority but i think Pears could turn out to be an ok keeper he just needs games now.

He's no Tommy K but he hasn't got half the experience of him, Wigan nightmare aside i certainly think he looks more capable than Steele ever did.

Looking forward to Broughtons interview exposing the difficulties of getting players in January.

Look around you, everyone is bringing in players other than us! Wigan, Preston, Blackpool, Burnley….

God that's painful to read. Us being compared to Wigan, Preston, Blackpool and Burnley.

I long for the days when they were irrelevant to us, rather than peers.

From who?

I think the only person he'll be under pressure from is JDT who will rightly expect people to arrive this month and will probably be considering his future if he isn't backed.

Rather than be under pressure from upstairs the owners, their dogsbody and Waggott will probably congratulate him if he navigates a transfer window without spending and takes the flak from the media and fans - some would say that was the plan from the start.

The majority of supporters are fully paid up members of the FFP / its too hard in January / we've done all we can routine.

Pears and Haikin have the same body type. Quite slim and agile, and neither very commanding. Couldn't say that one was better than the other, but think Pears has too many errors in him to make it.

Yet Steele is contracted as the back up GK at a Premier League side.

Most back up premier league GK’s are English as it goes towards filling the quota of HG/English players (I think) hence why Scott Carson is still on the books of Man City and United had Lee Grant for a few years.

Steele is a poor goalie and 1 PL appearance in 5 years or whatever it is tells you all you need to know.

I still haven’t forgotten the opening goal for Fulham away last season. My mum could have saved it and she’s 92.

Would she have done similar on the 3 1 on 1's at home to Birmingham? 😉

They also weren't the immediate back up to the starter at those clubs. Completely understand the whole point around perceived sub par keepers getting contracts in the Prem due to the home grown quota. Merely pointing out that Steele is probably a bit better than he's made out to be on here, given that he's trusted to be the immediate back up at Brighton. I don't think Pears will ever find himself in that position.

So we are strengthening a position which is arguably the strongest in the squad by signing a 27 year old incidentally from Broughton's old club. That scouting network must have worked overtime for this one. And what about ROI? Didn't Broughton specifically example a 27 year old midfielder with no ROI as a non starter?
