It certainly does fuck us up business wise. If you have perhaps less resources than some of your competitors, you have to trade smartly. We either let players go for free whilst rejecting offers that would make us profits or even if we do sell, we don't invest any of that money. Crazy. The position they are in they need to sign someone who is actually doing the business at the moment. They can’t afford to gamble. He did make that one last ditch block against Bradford in the League Cup this year, which secured us the tie with West Ham (and then on to the next round against Forest), which will have raised our revenues by ~£400k+ this year. So, boom, worthwhile signing 🙂

Him and an adequate Hirst replacement and I'd be very happy. I highly doubt we have the funds for this though Can’t stand him in an opposition shirt ….would love him in a Rovers shirt, just what we’re missing…a nasty piece !

From what I have seen, Hirst is not up to professional football at any level. We will have to wait and see who is right and who is wrong. I don't rate him at all but he's clearly a professional quality player.
roversfan99
It really was a strange signing for a top half Championship side considering he had a slightly less than 1 in 3 goal record in League 1. I dont know if the assumption was that he could maintain his run from the end of the season with the fact that he had struggled to score much of the time in League 1 dismissed but he cant have been our number 1 target. That being said, obviously to even score that many in League 1 shows you are a reasonable professional player, he could play in the Conference where surely he would thrive (mind you we thought that about Vale!) therefore he is professional standard.

Swanson
Jo Inge Berget has left Malmø now, free agent. Not wanted there anymore according to himself on Instagram. Wonder if JDT will pick up the phone... Not a fan of Berget joining Rovers personally, mostly because of his age. He'd be a stop gap for sure if JDT decided to approach. Don't really know much about him but a bit of experience, might not go a miss in our squad. (I'd prefer pace though!) No idea how good he is though. Edited January 4, 2023 by davulsukur

We won't have to wait and see though, as he has already demonstrated quite sufficiently that he is fine at League One level. 14 goals in League One simply isn't 'not up to professional football at any level' unless he has had a serious injury reducing his capability, which he hasn't. It's not really an opinion thing, you're simply empirically wrong. He may be out of form, out of shape, struggling to adjust here or whatever, but the cast iron fact is he has shown he has the capability at that level. Blimey! That is a swap I would do! Dembele is decent, and Wallace was excellent at Millwall and a good swap in itself. Aside from the eggs being in more baskets that's improving the squad. Mare to miss out on this alone. Mind you with Giles whacked onto the right I dare say they would have been rendered pointless by Dembele being in net and Wallace at centre back...

I am not comparing the two, what I am saying is that things can change. He nearly died in a motorbike accident and suffered head injuries. I already said in the post you quoted, 'unless he has had a serious injury reducing his capability, which he hasn't'. Even if his late-ish goal glut there was a fluke purple patch, I'd be astonished if no League One outfit at all, not even a newly promoted relegation battler, is interested in him. Doesn't mean such a move will happen - Leicester might not like the finances, as they'll want a bigger wage contribution since he signed a new, presumably better deal this summer. I'd certainly be surprised if he pops up in the Championship again this season for another club though. Hasn't shown a damned thing at this level in two loan spells. Scored 0 in 32 for Rotherham in this league, and now piss poor for us. But we shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking that because someone is gash at this level (or disinterested at U21s) they can't hack it in the one below, football history is chock full of examples of players who couldn't make that step up but were fine one rung below. It's why Prem teams are sometimes reluctant to take gambles on your Armstrongs and Breretons.

I'd even say it was reasonably ambitious for a promotion chasing side, as he was the top assist maker in the league at the time despite being a wing back. Ol' Tony thought he knew better though, as usual.
