Popular Post sympatheticclaret Posted November 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2022 In peace as ever .... After our bruising loss as Bramhall Lane, followed by an afternoon at Blackburn Rugby Club, with old friends, supping Hen Harrier and watching them battle out a 26-13 win over Rossendale, here is my preview ... Sunday sees the 103rd renewal of one of the oldest " derbies " in World professional football, when Blackburn Rovers travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley. The first meeting, 134 years ago ago, ended in a 1-7 away win for t'Rovers, a repeat of which would suit most of those reading my scribbling just fine ! Both Clubs have illustrious histories. Blackburn who dominated the early years of the FA Cup and have had their more recent success, under the " Jack Walker " regime, winning the Premier League and a League Cup. Burnley won both the FA Cup & League Championship either side of the " Great War ", and another League title in 1959-60. The " Head to Head " is virtually tied, with Burnley having 42 wins, Blackburn 41 wins with 19 draws. With all that said this game is about the present. I suspect both sets of fans will be pleasantly surprised by their current League standings, with Burnley atop the table with Blackburn two points behind. Rovers have tended to be either feast or famine with 12 wins & 8 defeats, whereas Burnley have picked up 8 draws to add to their 10 wins and only two reversals. I can't help but think that Rovers will have learnt from the frailties exposed by Sheffield United. Burnley's two full backs lack height at set-pieces, and frankly, Dracula reacts better to crosses than Muric ! His place must be in question now, with Northern Irish goalkeeper, Bailey Peacock-Farrell waiting in the wings. Those of a Claret persuasion will hope that Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork and local boy, Jay Rodrigues will return for Sunday. From our point of view, the enigma that is Bradley Dack is one to be feared, as is Brereton Diaz. Young Bradley will be remembered on the Clarets' forum for one of the better thread titles, after his court appearance some time ago, " Dick Dack in Dock ! " 😎 Whatever happens, one set of fans will have a rather cheerier World Cup break than the other, as this is the last game until fixtures restart on 10th December ... unless or course, it's a draw, which I think would be the Chief Constable of Lancashire's favoured outcome. Hope you've enjoyed this, and enjoy/endure the game, wherever you may be watching !! 38 Quote

J*B Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 I can’t find a way to bring the other posts into here without messing up the ordering, so we’ve lost half a page of posts. Apologies to those effected, but in the spirit of Lanclassico I wanted a Dingle to the preview. 1 Quote
Mattyblue Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 For all the slagging off it gets, this thread is a aood example of how this forum is actually a very fair minded, welcoming place for a good debate. Just imagine a Rovers fan being allowed to do the match preview on UTC or PNE-Online… and if they somehow did, how much abuse they’d get! 8 Quote

Mattyblue Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 Well obviously the two resident Dingles will be banned at 14:30 on Sunday if it goes awry… 3 Quote

Popular Post Proudtobeblue&white Posted November 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) An ode to bygone days........ If you were born in 1870, as I know there are a few on this message board who were, and you attained the age of 18, and Papa allowed you out on you own for the first time, you might have ventured to something called the inaugural "football league". If you chose your fixtures well, on the 8th November 1888, you and 2,999 other hardy souls would have attended some god awful pitch in a strange town, just down the road from Rovers town, to marvel at the spectacle of 11 be-shirted men from Rovers town demolishing strange town 7-1, good men, Beresford, Fecitt (2), Forrest, and the mighty hat-trick hero, Jack Southworth on the score sheet. The next five games against strange town, sequenced, 4-2, 7-1 (again), 2-1, 6-1 and 5-2. Great days indeed! It hasn't always been days of wine and roses however, as we haven't won in our last four meetings, losing 1-2, 0-1, 0-1 in the Championship, and 0-2 in the League Cup. It is indeed W41, D19, L42 over time, so quite frankly, they owe us one! My memories of attending strange town's ground are mixed. I'm old enough to have experienced standing on that long bit, with a net in between, whilst the six fingered ones hurled objects towards us. Getting up, before I went to bed, to get to Ewood to be bussed the ten miles or so, to be stared at by an eccentric array of individuals, looking from behind net curtains in disbelief that other people existed. My favourite game was at Ewood, 1st April 2001, a fool's day was made. 5-0, in front of 23,442. (who wouldn't fit their stadium to this day). The mighty Matty Jansen with two, Craig Short, Craig Hignett, and strange town even scored in their own net! If you have the courage to attend next Sunday, I wish you a safe trip. I will be watching from afar (well Clitheroe actually), shouting at the box, as if it will make a difference. I hope JDT takes this as seriously as the rest of us. It doesn't make or break the season, but it will take us into the bought World Cup in good spirits. Talking of which, have a Benny, or indeed a few Benedictines and coke, before you enter the "Barnfeild (as per strange town's own website) Construction stand. Built in 1888, it contains all the facilities you will ever need. One lavvy, a coffee machine (if working, take your loose change), and real oldy worldy leather back seats (I jest), don't take your own cat as there isn't enough room to swing it. I have a lot of strange town friends, some of them are almost normal. I hope all who attend, have a lovely time, save for those supporting t'other team. Traditions are important. Lancashire knows this as much as most. COYB's The end. Edited November 6, 2022 by Proudtobeblue&white 17 Quote
den9112 Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 No Dack available for Sunday... I have known players deliberately get sent off just before the Christmas weekend for obvious reasons and cynic in me as me question if it was done deliberately .... 2 Quote

My sense of humour... wish I'd thought of it! All you need to know is that if Burnley score first, then it's game over. A Rovers team under Tomasson have never come back from behind (even to draw). Rovers have been awful generally away from home (I've seen 4 defeats) and the losses usually self-inflicted through mucking about with the ball at the back. If Ayala's playing all you need to do is press him and he'll give the ball away. However, if Rovers take the lead expect a hard match because we've shown we can defend narrow leads for long periods, and luck has been on our side. So there it is, my head expects Burnley to win 2-0 but football's not logical so I'll hope for a repeat of 1965-66 when I first attended Turf Moor and go: Burnley 1 Rovers 4 2 Quote

tomphil Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 First draw of the season here i reckon. We'll pinch a goal in the first 5 mins JDT will take off all forwards and we'll camp in our box for the next 85. After 90 Ref will signal play on until Burnley score then duly award the a pen after 10 mins when he gets fed up. Burnley 1 Rovers 1 A few bruised knuckes and blackeyes around East Lancs in the afternoon. Quote

AJW Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 I can’t help but think Burnley will work on their defensive frailties that were exposed by Sheffield Utd , we are much bigger and physically imposing that the Burnley and we should not be afraid to use that advantage , i see Burnley having a lot of possession and us defending deep and hitting BBD on the break I,d be tempted to play Dolan instead of Smodizcs , not because he’s better but Because he wins so many free kicks and those set pieces could be key for us 3 Quote
