Head to roll after the transfer screw up?

It says he’s got a new job at the Welsh FA, rather than being sacked due to the January window.

Yeah also he was unlikely to be in the role involved in the final contracting steps where the ball was dropped. He's someone who finds talent much earlier in the chain (I believe anyway).

Nicko reported this yesterday.

Williams role is finding and scouting players. He plays no role negotiating transfers or paperwork side of transfers

Yeh like Joey said, the transfer debacle will be basically nothing to do with him. The only conceivable reason to release him over the window would be if he was unable to find any strikers within budget that the management team wanted (that's find, the actual negotiations are the club's problem).

I find it a bit concerning that turnover in recruitment staff seems so high in recent times. It's not a good way to build a coherent plan for the future. Whether it's our fault or not. I wasn't particularly impressed with Williams' CV, as I had doubts how well his experiences at international level would translate to club level. Good to read that we're already looking at the replacement. If it's all true, that's more proactive than we've been in the past.

The report linked at the bottom of that though, about Spurs still sniffing around Phillips, isn't good to read.

The other possible take on this is that he's deeply upset at the amount of work his team put in, only for it to be worthless because of the admin screw ups. The amount of times I've witnessed people leaving companies in my career because "a great opportunity has come up", when in reality if the culture and process was correct in their current role, they wouldn't be remotely interested in leaving in the first place.

I don’t think there is any intention of selling Phillips just yet. It’s definitely the idea further down the line, but I can’t see him being sold for the £5 million quoted in the article. There’s an expectation he’ll fetch 4 times that by the time he moves on.

I’m indifferent to the Gus Williams news. If he had input into the Sorba Thomas loan he’s played a blinder there, but he doesn’t appear to be anything like irreplaceable.

In a heartbeat. Won't happen though, not yet, and the article talks about more like 5 million (it's a figure this source seems to have plucked out his arse though, given the phrasing in the quote).

I very much doubt that Williams had any role in the January fiasco.

I do find it worrying that someone supposedly in such a position who has had 1 transfer window in the job is upping sticks and going back to the Welsh FA. That doesn't look good whatever your interpretation.

I suspect that he's another who came here with expectations and good intentions, only to realise that operating successfully under these imbeciles is virtually impossible. So he's getting out quickly

I've applauded the backroom appointments under Broughton. For once resembling a proper competent modern football club. The January window and this news makes me worry that the owners are still undermining the Club.

I would imagine the role with the Welsh FA will be a much easier one, ie a smaller pool of players to watch and, as you have said, he's probably realised what he's up against at Rovers.

You would think that being the recruitment guy at a decent club would be far more interesting than working for a national side, so it is quite worrying that he's off already.

He ain’t off!! He’s been pushed because we didn’t find the players the manager wanted - best for all parties if he goes back job!!

If he picked out Hirst then it's for the best.

The only signing we made on his recommendation was Thomas. I don’t want to be an after timer - because I hadn’t been told this until today - but it sounds like JDT didn’t approve/wasn’t happy with the standard of a lot of his recommendations through January.

I hope that is the correct explanation, I really do, because it is the only one bar some personal reasons on Williams' part in wanting to move back to Wales, that doesn't cause me concern.

If that story is correct then it suggests (a) that JDT plans on being here beyond the end of this season (b) the club are willing and able to act on his opinions and (c) is able to do so relatively quickly and in good time for the summer.

Lets hope its right and we get a replacement in pronto, because if we balls this up again I think we will be searching for more than just a head of recruitment.

I would’ve loved to have seen JDT’s face when they suggested Mark Harris from Cardiff…

Spurs, behind the scene, trying to unsettle our player by feeding "journalists"?

Entirely possible. The short length of Phillips' deal does cause me concern. We pretty much need to begin negotiating a new one in the summer, already. I'm glad we tied it up but he or his agents obviously don't see him being here for very long unless there's a significant pay rise in it (if then). Sort of understandable, given how highly he is rated and predicted to go, but I'll be concerned about his future until we can tie him to a longer deal.

That lad from Leeds was put on our radar as well and all iv'e seen is Sunderland fans say he's useless so we dodged one there.

On the face of it though this guy was recruiting for a small national team it's a different scenario altogether being told to find specific type players for a league side.  It's the muppets who hired him in the first place who need a kick up the backside you need specialist men for a specialist job.

All he was ever going to recommend was  Welsh kids he's familiar with and one's agents are pimping around wanting guaranteed games.

Broughton said we did find the players we wanted, Undav, the French lad, O'Brien and Brierley, but they wouldn't come or the deals were ballsed up. It seems to me he is the sacrificial lamb in the whole sorry mess.

There’s lots of reasons why a job doesn’t work out. Could be that he hasn’t settled? Has a family member he needs to look after? Etc

Professionally it might not be working out. Personality clash? Culture change? Imagine there’s a big change of pace from Welsh FA to promotion chasing Rovers?

My thoughts circled around the timing after the window. One which was overshadowed by the LOB saga but was pretty much an unmitigated failure. Because we didn’t find / sign the players in the positions that JDT and GB wanted. Maybe the post mortem in Feb pointed to Williams and they’ve all decided that in order to prevent it from happening again (and the manager from leaving), he be moved on…🤷🏽‍♂️
