Throw in ledley King and woodgate.  We had some incredible depth at centreback

Was a shame for both of those that their bodies seemed to be made out of something no sterner than soggy Weetabix (as was Jones)

Many people said king was the best of the lot when he was fit. Woodgate had the worst real madrid debut in history lol. An own goal and a red card

I'd say Michael Carrick was the last English player that Wharton can be compared to

Carrick was a top class player. Pinged beautiful passes all over the pitch, longer range than Wharton. Could have won far more England caps, but for the obsession with Gerrard and Lampard.

Some Rovers fans should take their blue and white tinted glasses off.  Wharton is very good but has a long way to go before he gets near the standard of Carrick.

Agree jim. Carrick was a unique player in terms of English midfielders. We seem to ignore these kind of players with England.  Hoddle was another criminally underused

King was a really top class player. What he would have been like with two good knees !

I remember listening to Dean Saunders speaking. Somebody asked him who was the best player he ever played with. He said Paul McGrath right away. He said his knees were that bad he could hardly train at all but come Saturday he was ready for anything.

I went to "An evening with DS" last year, he said exactly the same.

Wharton now is superior to Carrick in his prime by some distance.

This is an insane statement.

He may well end up being superior to him, but this is an absolutely insane statement.

He’s not really that good is he? So we’re told. Madrid think he’s worth a look.

Well maybe he’ll link up with Adam Henley there….

I think he's a really, really good player, but he's a firefighter (and an excellent one) who should sit in midfield. For some reason everyone is convinced that he's a world class box-to-box midfielder and he just doesn't have it in his locker - as the above clip highlights.

£100m for him was insane too.

No player is worth 100 million.  I would have said rice was probably worth 70 million tops but he's progressed into a far more complete midfielder since joining arsenal

12 months after we gave him away for £18 Million they’re talking about a £70 Million deal in the summer. Why aren’t the chicken chokers firing whoever agreed to that deal ?

You are right Tyrone but they probably have no idea, who Adam Wharton is!

Probably because it was them.

so you really think we were going to get £70 million pounds for him? no chance in hell

He is worth that much down to his PL performances

No one is saying that we should have got £70 million for him.

Rather, the point being made is that we should have got a heck of a lot more than the measly sum that we did get.

I don't know if this is correct, but someone on here, said we have a 15% sell on clause. Accepting the fact that we were desperate to sell him, given the problems with funding us, then surely a bigger sell on clause should haven been agreed.

I think most fans expected him to kick on at Palace, so even the dim wits running the show, could see that and maybe 25- 40% would at least make it look like someone did at least a decent job.

Maybe we should maybe not.

only Palace was interested and signed him, We will get another 5-10 mil with the sell on clause

Rovers need the money from his sale to fund the club losses that season and this one
