But we forced him out the door at the end of the January window desperately.

So you have:

- desperation to sell

- selling in the January window where teams dont do the bulk of their business

- selling at the end of an already shorter window so time pressured

- he hasnt played as much as he would have done had we waited until at least the summer

All of them factors caused him to be sold for less than we could have got for him.

I dont get the obsession around England under 21s. Archie Gray had barely played for them before his transfer to Spurs.

Archie gray was a couple of years younger than Wharton when he started playing for Leeds, and Leeds would have been at the top end of the division, plus his family history would have been taken into consideration. And if he barely played for the under 21s then it was more than Wharton who didn't get selected once.

At the end of  the day he was available for 18.5 if the likes of city Liverpool arsenal etc had any interest they would have been in for him then.

We where struggling last season ,he had played well enough for 12 months ,I don't see what would have changed in the next 6 months with him playing at the same level for a struggling team that would have led to much more money being put on the table for him, and it would have been similar clubs in for him your palace's evertons etc

You sniffed out a club that needed a quick sale to pay its bills and bagged yourself a bargain before he became a bigger name, fair play.

But thinking it’s down to some crack scouting team when he’d been a star man whilst only a teenager in a team that had been knocking around the Championship play offs, aye ok.

Well not many other clubs were interested.

Happens all the time. Every club in the Prem will have known players like Eze and Wharton are rare talents, but very few of the big clubs are willing to take the plunge. Or the players don’t go there because they know they’ll not develop as quickly cos they won’t get much playing time. That leaves small PL clubs like Palace to take a punt.

Then a year or two later the big clubs buy these players for 5x the amount they could have got them for 2 years earlier.

It is a shame, they didn't heed that advise, as I suspect, not only would we have got more for him, but the sell on clause, would have been higher too.

I think we all know and not just with Hindsight that, Adam is a far better player than Alex Scott.

I'm glad he was sold on the cheap.

Means the owners have to use more of their own money to fund the club.

That's not the argument I'm making though ,I agreed we shouldn't have sold him but there was obviously doubts about him(not from me) but from clubs higher up.if they thought he was a world class talent and capable of adapting to the Premier league as easily as he has done then there would have been a queue of clubs in for the price we sold him for

You don't have to be a world class talent or even close, to be worth upwards of 18 million to a Prem side at the age of 19. It's peanuts for a good youth prospect at that level.

Yep, but they also pass on 10x those sorts of players along the way.

Wharton is unbelievable, so pleased we bought him when no one else was interested. Just shows Crystal Palace are a club that scout amazing championship players - Wharton, Eze, Olise to name a few…

I don't know if you've come in peace, but your username is obnoxious.

Not from the championship  over the years a handful of young players his age have moved up for a similar or higher fee.

Il be clear I think he is top class and believe we should have had clubs fighting over him and paying more it's just my opinion that although plenty looked the bigger teams for sure felt he was missing something. Because if they saw what we saw they would have been in for him along with Palace in the January

It's like comparisons with Scott he was England under 21 regular and am sure he captained them and a regular for Bristol two full seasons, Archie Gray had represented England from under 15 and then every age group including under 21s, he was also playing for Leeds who operate towards the top of the table and was getting mentioned in the media and talked up way more than Wharton.

Wharton is a better player than both but Wharton had been playing a year of regular championship football but didn't get a call up which points to him not being as rated externally

Do clubs base the value of a youngster on how many under 21 caps they have?

The comments are "anyone with 2 eyes can see how good he is".So why wasn't he being included for the national squads then?

Facts are he was available for 18 million after playing a year of Championship football any of the big clubs could have bought him then. But they didn't so they where going to come in in the summer and pay many millions more. They wouldn't have

Islander we all get your point, we all get why the fee was crap for him in January 2024, but all that would have been irrelevant if we didn’t bundle him out the door as soon as we could.

The cards were obviously not stacked in our favour at that stage of his career, he was still building a reputation within the game that would have led to more suitors and ergo a higher fee  - so don’t sell him yet would have been the obvious decision… but we needed cash and quick, Palace sniffed out a distressed seller, so we got what we got and the leccy bill was paid.

All had scouted him and were interested - as well as some foreign clubs (eg Dortmund).

Palace were just the quickest to move for him.

He's clearly been destined for the top for some time and, in fairness, Palace has been a good stepping stone for him to get Premier League exposure.

I agree he shouldn't have been sold in the January but his agents and the lad himself probably would have wanted to move up a level In the summer.

We might have got £20 instead of 18 guaranteed as it would have been the same sort of clubs in for him.The top clubs could have bought him in January for the price Palace bought him for  they weren't going to be coming in 6 months later bidding many millions more

If only we had wealthy owners, that would never happen then ! Oh, I forgot, we have.

It says a lot about our owners and also our coaches that we’ve had players like Harvey Elliot, Wharton, Ayari, Van Hecke, Rothwell, Tosin but we couldn’t assemble a team to get into the play offs.

In some cases, we couldn’t get the best out of them, albeit, they were young players.

Palace have tended to appreciate young creative players. I recall a certain forward called Matt Jansen. The tables have turned a lot now.
