It's over the top to describe him as "world class". If Wharton is world class how do you describe the likes of Bellingham? He's a very good, promising player who is going to get better without a doubt but that's as much as you can say at the moment. Many Premier clubs looked at him but they had doubts. He might have gone for a higher price this summer but who knows? Palace made the price he was worth at the time

I think he may have got under 21's selection whilst here but certainly not full squad recognition. The Premier League gave him a platform undoubtedly but nobody will tell me he improved so significantly after 16 games at Palace to justify his selection. He is doing the same things and playing the same way as he did here. The talent has always been there, evident since he was a kid. He has risen to the challenge of playing with and against better players as many of us knew he would.

I don't think palace have improved him since he joined, but he looks so much better playing with players that can time a run and receive a pass. I said early on he looked so much like Pirlo but a lot of his passes where into space no one was looking to exploit.

As the saying goes it is hard to soar like an eagle when surrounded by turkeys. Pun very much intended.

Makes all the hubub about Ashe Philips look well over done. All the talk on here about a once in a generation talent, he played some games for Plymouth and even there fans were not unanimous in wanting him back on loan.

I know defenders mature later but Jones was being signed by Utd at that age.

Yeah, in hindsight it's very easy to say we "gave him away" as some people are saying.  Wharton's transfer was the biggest of the domestic January window, and although it's no surprise he's moved to a different level again these past few months (we knew he would), it was a decent price for a championship player having played less than 50 games.

He will undoubtedly move again before too long when we should also benefit from a big sell on fee

Palace got him cheap because many of the top clubs have FFP issues in Jan. Would have got more for him in summer, but also we'd have gone bankrupt!

To be honest I'd have taken 6 more months of watching A. Wharton and then bankruptcy if it meant these awful owners fucked off for good.

Metronome? What the hell is that.

His running stats at Rovers were among the best in the club and he was recorded as the second fastest ever sprinter in the Academy. I've read a few of your posts were you pick up on what you consider his weaknesses but nobody else sees them least of all too managers and coaches. If course he can improve but he's 20.

Adam's tackle, interception and winning the ball back stas are also impressive.

In his time at Palace he has proven to all that he's PL quality.

The step to England level, which is really PL plus maybe a bit, when looking at the top of the table, is a natural progression for him.

Fuck Venkys, Fuck Waggott, Fuck Suhail.

Where I disagree is the last few season represented superb chances to get promoted. I genuinely believed that with a player like O’Brien, we’d have fought for 2nd place again. The season before that we WERE second for a big chunk of time.

If Venkys/Waggott had brains, we’d be in the PL and Wharton would be doing his stuff for us.

We had a far superior player to O’Brien in Wharton. Unfortunately he was dropped for a prolonged period and always played second fiddle to Tyler Morton until he got injured.

We wouldnt have fought for 2nd. We were 22 points behind in the end, with poor GD. We would have needed to go on a nigh on perfect run from January.

Like we had until January?

There was always a cap to how much he could have been sold for at a Championship club but we definitely could have got more if we were run by normal owners.

Had we waited until the summer and had we not been under such pressure to sell to pay the bills and for the owners court case, we wouldnt have been in such a poor negotiating position. Palace knew we had to sell.

Had we kept him until the summer, he gets a further half season to impress so that value goes up anyway. Pointless saying only Palace bid and only x and y were rumoured, even if they were the genuinely the only teams showing an interest, in crucially a summer window with Wharton having more games under his belt, more teams would be interested and would be more likely to spend in the summer. And assuming we didnt have to kick him out the door such was our desperation, we get a higher fee.

Interesting breakdown of his attributes. Showed last night with that 5 yard pass that sent Gallagher rampaging towards the goal. Commentators were praising CG, but no way he makes that run if AW wasn't on pitch to start it:

Theres no way that one midfielder overturns a 20+ point difference. We would have got into the play offs but not to a 90+ automatic promotion season.

I didn’t remember it was as many as that, thought it was about 10. You’re probably right but the playoff point still stands.

A Wharton's ability to scan is the mark of an elite playmaker. Martin Ødegaard is probably best at this in the PL:

We weren't saying that with hindsight though. We were saying it at the time and the last six months has only proved us right.
