Upside Down Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Damn that's a real shame. Why he was given the job in the first place will always be a mystery to me, Swansea were bang average at best. Quote
Exiled_Rover Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 The gap between the Championship and the Premier League is clearly monumental these days. Remember when Rovers, Bolton and Fulham all stayed up? Now the promoted teams are lucky to get to 30 points - and that's after spending tens of millions on new players. I'd LOVE it if we were promoted this year, but we'd come straight back down. 1 Quote
RoverDom Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 If only official attendance figures were counted based on numbers left at the start of the second half. Saints could have been counted on one hand. Quote

Backroom DE. Posted December 16, 2024 Backroom Posted December 16, 2024 (edited) I rarely watch MOTD these days, but I watched it on Oct 26 and was left baffled as the pundits lavished praise upon Russell Martin after bottom of the table, winless Southampton lost again. You'd have thought they were top of the league and winning every match. It was like some kind of cult broadcast. Utterly bizarre and I'm clearly out of touch with the modern game. I thought the point of football was to win matches. Edited December 16, 2024 by DE. Quote

A lot of people said Ipswich would get wrecked this season, but Kieran McKenna has made changes to his philosophy whilst trying to keep the core principles in place. Granted they've only won two games this season, but they haven't been a pushover and haven't had many resounding defeats - other than Man City early in the season, and West Ham away, the majority of their defeats have been by only one or two goals. There's still a good chance they go down, but they're competing and putting up a fight. Southampton are basically already down. 6 Quote

Former Danish national team coach Kasper Hjulmand is the bookies favourite. Question is, is the change of head coach too late to keep them up and would they be better focusing on appointing a head coach for next season in the Championship and getting promotion from it. they got the recruitment badly wrong in the summer. signed too many players not enough quality 11 hours ago, DeeCee said: Martin to Oxford anyone? Mattyblue Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 (edited) Imagine Eustace having to explain himself to Gregg Broughton because he wasn’t hitting some ‘data point’ or other for some useless metric. Edited December 17, 2024 by Mattyblue 1 Quote

Cos they will employ an head coach who fits the ethos of the club and what they want. If you are club who wants to bring through young players and develop them then you would appoint someone with history of this. If you want to play a certain playing style then you appoint someone who fits your objective. 11 minutes ago, roversfan99 said: I dont know whether he should have been sacked, but I think Manning had Oxford top last season and they dropped under Buckingham. roversfan99 Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Fit the ethos, fit the style. Just nonsense management speak. Whatever happened to letting the manager decide how they want to play, regardless of delusions about how it should be played. The result of this is managers sticking to a style that doesnt suit the players at his disposal and getting the sack. 5 Quote

For me the beauty of football is there are so many ways to play the game. I've always hated it when managers and the like look down their noses at styles which differ from their own, like Wenger did with us in the 00's. Martin strikes me as selfish. Someone more determined that he as an individual is associated with a style of play in the hope it'll be good for his career, rather than being adaptable and pragmatic for the good of the club. 3 Quote

We don't have managers any more, we have head coaches whilst we have sporting director running the football departments whilst head coaches are just in charge of first team affairs. Managers have gone from the game and that old style role has gone from Football. Like I said, Sporting Director and owners will pick the head coach that fit what they want. Russell Martin was picked by Southampton cos they wanted to play that style. Would he have been my choice? no he wouldn't. But he delivered what they wanted which was promotion. This season, Martin will not adapt his footballing philosophy to get better results. Quote

Bob Belcher Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 The Premier League is a cesspool for the most part. Would I love for Rovers to continue this good bit of form and somehow get promoted come seasons'e end? Of course. However, so much money would be needed to stay up, get demolished more often than not, and just I don't think have as much fun as perhaps most fans think they would. Again though want us to get there yes, but in the grand scheme of things, the Championship is just more exciting if I am being honest.🤷♂️ Quote
