Seems like it was a great time to follow Rovers. A club you could really be proud of and cult heroes. 

At the top of the list is the one and only Simon Garner.

Legend and cult hero gets thrown around on a whim now but this guy was both.

Loved just playing for Rovers and living in the town, hated Burnley and they hated him which was quite ironic seeing as we hardly ever played them.

They once even ram raided his shop !

Not on the same level as a player but second best finisher iv'e seen at Rovers behind Shearer.

Had everything in his game (obviously wasn’t rapid, but was no slouch). Far worse players have had decent top flight careers.

garner was definately good enough for the top division but i suppose the way he lived his life put some of the top clubs off,a dozen pints after the game with fans in the supporters club and a smoking habit😊if you cut him he would bleed blue and white

burnley fans hated him because he basically sent them down when they played at ewood circa 1983,rovers win a penalty,he misses but the ref spots a dingle in the box and orders it retaken,he does`nt make the same mistake and slams it in the top corner,cue stupid,thick inbred dingles climbing on top of the old darwen end roof,ripping the sheeting off and throwing it on the pitch,trying to get the game abandoned,it did`nt work,we won 2-1,the missiles hit their own fans and the dingles ended up relegated,oh and john bond sold all their best  players for a pittance.thats what i call a result

As for his off field habits it may have put off a few top clubs - Liverpool were looking at him once but wanted someone bigger - however that lifestyle was par for the course in those days.

Bigger pisspot, more unfit players than Garner had decent top flight careers.

I think it was just an era where there were a lot of good strikers around and clubs preferred big target men types in top flight. Also players tended to stay with clubs and play most games non of this rotating 20 subs giant squads stuff.

He’s the only player I’ve ever seen score 5 in a game. He broke the club’s goal scoring record in a classic drubbing of Man City at Ewood on the day of the Hillsborough disaster. I’m glad he got to see us promoted to the top flight in the end. Him and Howie Gayle were a formidable pair in the late 80s, but my favourite season of Garns was when we had Archibald next to him - two top quality players right there! 
Fitness regimes for players were a lot less strict in those days but nonetheless he took it to extreme levels 😂😂

The papers love saying unrecognisable. I think it's up there in the top ten of the clockwork index along with heartbroken, reality and Meghan.

I'd recognise him anywhere 😂

Definitely. An eye for a player, constantly in the top 6 on buttons, a cup win and a real swashbuckling team at times. Always came across as a top bloke too.

And the Don cared. We were all in it together and they were great days. It's hope and togetherness that makes football. When was the last time we had that.

It was Bobby who signed sellars though. £25l if I remember rightly. Why leeds let him go I'll never know. There's a YouTube clip of him scoring a belter for Leeds, I'll find it in a mo. Played u21 for England once getting subbed on for gazza

I loved the guy he was no nonsense straight talker and he fell out with fans a time or two he wasn't afraid to say get behind the lads and stop moaning FFS.

Fans always responded though because they respected him and he had us batting at the right end of the table and some decent football.

Ah right, I just rememebr a story about Gray not rating Sellars. Checked wiki and Gray was manager until '85 so it may well have been BB that sold him to Rovers.

have no idea how the don managed to persuade him,his impact however was curtailed by a nasty tackle by future rover nicky marker,it put him out for a couple of months

we did sign steve archibald on loan at the same time,he was a class act
