neophox Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) Carter will be worth more than £10m hope he's tied up on a long contract along with Leonard. On Wharton I think we have the best midfelder in the Championship. He looked more athletic than last season! Edited August 5, 2023 by neophox 4 Quote
Popular Post arbitro Posted August 5, 2023 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2023 Absolutely delighted with the win today particularly after predicting Rovers nil scoreline. In parts we were excellent against an experienced West Brom side. One thing I do know though was that every player out in the maximum of effort, a trait Tomosson has imparted into his players. And when you do that you always have a chance. Defensively we were comfortable save for a fifteen minute spell at the start of the second half although in truth that was West Broms purple patch. Our centre backs gave the kind of performance that gets results, they won headers, tackles and some great interceptions through excellent reading of play. In midfield we just about shaded it as Tronstadt showed what an acquisition he is going to be. Everything nice and simple and always available. Leonard was really good and will benefit hugely from his excellently taken goal as will Markanday. Szmodics showed exactly why he is fast becoming a fans favourite with his work rate and attitude. I was pleased that Tomasson went early with his changes and going like for like helped us keep our shape. Adam Wharton needs game time but the pass he played to put Leonard in was world class and not many players would see the run let alone be able to execute the pass. After the summer of discontent it was delightful to walk away from Ewood with a win. Well done JDT who I thought tellingly showed some emotion after the second goal. He is normally placid but he enjoyed that 😂😂. 14 Quote

He wasn't really tested on that today, which was equally surprising. Nobody seemed to have been told to take him on, as many other teams seem to have clocked onto. Perhaps I just didn't notice him, which isn't a bad thing, and perhaps it means he's doing his job and I'm being harsh. I must admit, when Hyam let the ball bounce in the first-half, and Asante (?) almost ended up through on goal, I initially assumed it was Pickering until I saw the replay. Perhaps there is a slight bit of prejudice! However, we seem to be quite light at left-back. Would Jake Batty be next in line? Or Brittain, who is technically a right-back? It feels as though Pickering has absolutely no competition there. In Waggott's interview, he talked about a goalkeeper, a central defender, and a striker as the priority areas. For me, we only have one senior left-back, and I think it's being overlooked. At least publicly. Quote
Popular Post Gaz85 Posted August 5, 2023 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2023 I think the thing I’ve learnt the most after todays game is to tell the wife tea needs to be ready for 6 not half 5…..she was not happy! 14 Quote
BankEnd Rover Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Just on A Wharton, he didn’t have the best game but he’s still clearly not match fit…However even on his bad games he still made an impact, unreal player! JDTs got a headache in the midfield - All played really well. 4 Quote

Pottering around outside the ground and a local bobby offered me and a mate some free tickets. His was in the JW, mine was slap bang in the middle of the Geordies. Never celebrated a goal as quietly in my life, whilst the other 3 sides of the stadium were electric. Edited August 5, 2023 by Andy 1 Quote
Paul Mellelieu Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Just home with Pinot Noir, Le Fou, although JDT showed that his is no fool today. A hugely entertaining game and when Wharton played those two passes I nearly disgraced myself. I lot to take in and much to reflect on. My three standouts were Hyam, Travis and Szmodic and our play at times was outstanding against a monster-sized team. 2 Quote

I imagine he's still getting used to the pace of the English game Neat and tidy. Brought a tenacity to midfield that we missed last year. Tired before he was brought off - assume he's not quite match fit yet. 1 Quote

Agreed, Pickering took up some great positions in the first half doing the Zinchenko type thing of coming into the centre to receive the ball and break the press/relieve pressure on Hyam and Carter as outlets. Thought it was very clever and executed perfectly 1 Quote
Popular Post roversfan99 Posted August 5, 2023 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2023 I think Pickering is our most underrated player, he was very good again. He is such a steady, consistent player who is good on the ball and doesn't often leave his lack of pace exposed. We had years of the erratic, error prone Bell and I feel far more secure now in that position. Though the lack of cover is a concern. 10 Quote

It does absolutely but I thought Joe had one of his quieter games by his own high standards. 1 Quote
deanives Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Do we need another centre forward? Will Leonard continue to improve, look at the positions he got in today and his work rate, absolutely fantastic! I feel if we bought one this would push Leonard down the pecking order, he needs the game time and confidence. Either that or we ship Gallagher off and have Leonard and another CF Quote
ItsRoverZ Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 If we add a few additions I'm really excited about this season! To watch Rovers young boys Leonard and Wharton play this season is going to be something else 4 Quote

Begging the (very poor) referee for penalties 'cos you're not creating anything else. Quote

The JRC one was the closest - VAR gives it, but it's never a penalty. 2 Quote
