philipl Posted August 30, 2023 Author Posted August 30, 2023 Great draw. Good level of opponents at home for the youngsters to measure themselves against and a decent chance of progressing. 4 Quote

What a credit to the club these youngsters are. Great attitude and desire to do well and from Tomasson's comments it seems they are great to work with too. I counted seven academy graduates in the team that finished alongside two youngsters in Bloxham and Markanday. Quite often games that see teams three or four up at the break and up with no second half goals but tonight our desire for more goals was clear to see and we could have had twelve. I loved Tomasson's post match comment that he wanted ten. Keeping Tomasson here should be the highest priority and the powers that be should be sitting down with him now with the offer of an extension to his deal. No penny pinching, no prevaricating just get the deal done. We won't make a better signing. Couldn't agree more. He's obviously deeply unhappy with the way this summer has panned out. We've got an international break soon after the window closes. Regardless of any talks of contracts there need to be some talks just to clear the air. Outline what caused the change in budgets and if there are ways of ensuring more consistency moving forwards, give him those reassurances. Then, money on the table. We're delighted with your performance, we want to keep you long term Jon. If he wants some kind of release clause then so be it. At least we'd be making sure we are fairly compensated when he does leave and at the end of the day, we want a happy manager. He's the best thing that's happened to our club in such a long time. My favourite manager since Souness. Edited August 31, 2023 by ben_the_beast 7 Quote
AllRoverAsia Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Very happy with the draw. We are at home ✅ Not against the filthy rich ✅ We could win and progress ✅ Tournament football is all about winning the next game, meanwhile great for young player development. 5 Quote

WacoRover Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 I am thrilled Tomasson gets excited about domestic Cup matches, and it spreads to the players. Great showing, and hopefully, a deep run in the League Cup. 6 Quote

My favourite manager since Souness. As JDT is at pains to point out in his interviews, he is as much in the dark as the fans. With the radio silence at the club, ever since the owners arrived, there is very little chance of anything other than the same again. 1 Quote
the original david brent Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) My lad & I had a very enjoyable evening in the hospitality. I booked it the moment the draw was made as not part of 1875, and wanted to tick this ground off. It was only a small room, sold out very quickly and we had good company on a table of Rovers fans. Their manager did a pre match Q & A and surprised everyone when he said he had made 9 changes as the league match on Saturday is very important. Their fans weren’t happy about that as the match went on. Excellent performance. The future is bright with some of these kids coming through. If you are standing out against League 2 opposition on your debut or 2nd appearance, like all of ours did, you have a bright future in the professional game. As an aside, I thought our fans were unusually very quiet. I don’t recall their being one song. Indeed I thought the 20 or so Rovers fans in the home end hospitality seats were more animated, and the pre match itinerary included a directive not to display visual or audio support for the away team! At 7 nil down, the home fans were still singing. I just thought a record away win deserved a bit more atmosphere from those lucky enough to be there. G Somerset Rover Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) For those that were there, and I appreciate it’s a little difficult given the standard of the opposition, who was our standout youngster? Edited August 31, 2023 by Gavlar Somerset Rover! Quote

MarkBRFC Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Something will have to give in the next round as there is a fixture issue. Cardiff play on the Sunday and we play on the Friday, meaning it's 2 games in 3 days for one of us. Be prepared for our game against Leicester to be moved to the Saturday at 8pm. 1 Quote

Here’s my take… Wahlstedt - had so little to do, but made one smart save. Distribution looks good. Seems a bit of a character and enjoyed the “Leo Leo” chants at the end. Gamble - clearly tasked with keeping it simple, did fine but not knocking on the first team door. Hyam/Carter - both ruthlessly efficient, Hyam beaten just once, Carter great on the ball. Wharton - much more like it. Seemed to relish the leadership role. Rock solid. Pickering - spent most of the game in central areas. Did it well. Trostad - great vision, played some lovely stuff, breaks play up very nicely too. Couple of misplaced passes but no big deal. Doesn’t have the energy of some of other midfield options but clearly a clever player. Buckley - on that showing he certainly has a future with us! Fantastic. Played some incredible balls, busier than normal. They will be having nightmares about our midfield for years. Garrett - phenomenal. Was absolutely all over the park, never gave the ball away. Really excited by his development, he’s come on leaps and bounds. Used the ball incredibly well and won it back often. Looks a proper box to box midfielder, and he took up a lot of very advanced positions at times. Bossed the game right up until the end. Blotted his copybook with one daft lunge that saw him booked. Markanday - a few of our attacks broke down with him early on, overplayed a bit. Goal settled him down. Doesn’t fit the slick quick passing game as well as others though. Gallagher - led the line well, never gave them a moments peace. Better with his back to goal last night. Put a very presentable chance about 3 streets away though. Still think he’s happiest out wide. Moran - wow! Clearly an incredibly talented player and you can see why we were so keen on him. Fantastic touch and feet. I thought he had a first 10 minutes to forget against Watford, but showed his ability once he’d settled. Clearly he wasn’t completely up to speed on how we play, but he’s picked it up in under a week! I’ve no doubt he will start on Saturday, prototype JDT ball player. Gilsenan - there was no doubt in my mind that freekick was hitting the back of the net the second he picked the ball up, you could see the confidence and you could just tell. He wanted the penalty too! Had a bit of a quiet spell before the end but that was down to all the changes and us becoming a bit less structured. Must be getting close to a league debut. Bloxham - rapid. Chased everything down. Lovely goal. By the time he was on the game was a bit different, but he can contribute this season I think. Edmondson - seems to have quite an old head on young shoulders. Very sensible. Nice to see him get a goal and he’ll be among our youngest ever scorers. Like Bloxham it’s incredibly difficult to judge with the game being almost farcical by the time they got on. Overall a brilliant night. It’s obvious we have a playing style under JDT that people will have to be able to deal with. Our midfield was frighteningly good and Harrogate were completely shellshocked after about 15 minutes. We terrorised them. One bugbear - Corners! Scott Wharton went up for every single one. Every single one went short. The second pass always went back to a defender in the half way line. They were rubbish! (I needed a Wharton goal for a bet where I’d have won £500, so surely a single cross wasn’t too much to ask!) Nice to see us breaking positive records nowadays! Things are infinitely better under JDT than Mowbray. Promotion under JDT is inevitable, so we need to pray Venky’s don’t sabotage it. Edited August 31, 2023 by Miller11 18 Quote
alexanders Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 It's easy to play down the result and performance, because of opposition. But there is such a good atmosphere, togetherness and will to fight for the badge now we should be very proud of the club/team. The proffesionality is running through thick from the academy to the first team. Lots of praise to JDT and GB ++ for making this perfect setup. 2 Quote
