Mattyblue Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 (edited) Telalovic aside who unfortunately looks way off at this stage (and is a symptom of the late window striker desperation after the budget cut), all the signings look like they have something to me. So kudos to GB, who’s done well throughout his time here considering the budgets he’s had to work with and the shambolic organisation he’s had to operate in. It’s more about is there enough bodies in that squad, especially up front to get through a 50+ game season if we want to be in the running for the top 6? I’d say no, and that’s on these owners. Unfortunately the one thing we wanted was an experienced centre forward type striker. Goals change matches. Score first and we’re a different proposition altogether. I suppose that applies to most teams. Quote
Tugayisgod Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 (edited) Views on the transfer window earlier this week.. Yep, crap window, down to the owners. Specifically wanted an experienced centre back, wasn't allowed by the owners. Kid on loan warming the bench. Badly needed a striker, got 2 but amidst the restrictions so such a limited field. One a freebie from Plymouth who looks good but is no use constantly injured. One a desperate deadline day punt from the German 4th division who is clearly not up to it but such were the restrictions... Needed width, blocked by the owners. Sigurdsson was poor yesterday but its his third game in a week after a bad injury, overall a promising signing. Moran looks a good player, although the owners unwillingness to allow us a right winger means he may be needed out of position. Pressure on Wahlstedt now to step up as our main signing, and the likes of Tronstad and Hill need to prove they aren't just making up the numbers. Terrible window. We needlessly spunked most of our budget on a reserve goalie; Ennis is a crock; Tronstad looks way off so far; the German is a million miles off However, Sigurrson looks promising, Moran is learning on the job with us and looks a prospect for Brighton; jury out on Hill who looked decent against Cardiff. Views on transfer window after yesterday ... Hard to argue that our summer business wasn't positive based on today's performance - and the players who contributed most Fair’s fair. Based on today they all looked pretty good who got on. I’m trying to be positive today and not worry too much how bad QPR were in all this. Siggy could be a Berkovic / Bellamy-like one season wonder What a difference a win makes !! Edited October 8, 2023 by Tugayisgod Quote
Andy Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 (edited) Sigurdsson wasn't poor yesterday. Even if he's contributing 2 goals and literally nothing else, he's had a good game. Edited October 8, 2023 by Andy Quote

roversfan99 Posted October 25, 2023 Author Posted October 25, 2023 Its crazy how much judgement on the transfer window seems to have changed since the window closed. The 2 that seemed to get the most excitement were Sigurdsson and Wahlstedt. Sigurdsson came with an interesting CV to directly replace our only goal threat from last season, and he scored a few goals, but his general performance level has not been particularly good and he has looked sluggish, maybe partly a symptom of not being fully fit. If he gets a decent goal haul that is the most important thing and he has shown signs of knowing how to score. Wahlstedt had the low low benchmark of Pears and has only conceded 2 but one was one of the worst mistakes youll ever see and he has been well protected, plus his inability to catch has caused some panic. Both have work to do to justify the excitement as they settle in. On the flip side, two who came through the door with little fanfare were Hill and Tronstad. Hill has suddenly emerged as not only a really useful player but his performances in an unfamiliar role have forced us to fit our other 2 talented right backs elsewhere. Tronstad had one underwhelming game and just became totally out of favour but has suddenly come back in and really added a nice balance to the midfield. Moran is a bit in the middle. Not the same expectation as one or two others, he has shown definite talent but with question marks over where and if he fits into our best 11. Getting a reliable striker was priority number 1 and yet we are still in a position whereby we could do with Gallagher coming back. Ennis is not fit enough to start matches and Telalovic looks a dud. 3 Quote
Andy Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Maybe it's time we started putting a bit more trust in our recruitment, data and analysis teams? 2 Quote

Ive never got this debate closing "put trust" into recruitment argument, why can we not discuss and predict what we make of signings without blindly agreeing? But why would this summer enforce that anyway? It has not been atypically successful, certainly not yet. You look especially at the most likely to be data driven, the foreign unknowns. Telalovic must have been found by the data driven analysts and look how far away he seems. Quote
Andy Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) It's far too early to make any definite conclusions about Telalovic; he needs a lot more game time before we can really judge him. What is encouraging is that he's scored a handful in a few friendly/behind closed door matches. Clearly knows how to score. Otherwise, look at last summer: Hyam, Brittain, Szmodics - all very good signings. This summer, I think we've seen very encouraging signs from Tronstad, Hill, Sigurdsson and Wahlstedt. The evidence at this moment in time would support our summer window being pretty successful, with the obvious omission of a proper striker. One thing is for sure, it's a long way from being the disaster some will have you believe - particularly in the circumstances. Edited October 25, 2023 by Andy 2 Quote

One thing is for sure, it's a long way from being the disaster some will have you believe - particularly in the circumstances. Who recently has made it out as a disaster? And either way, your point was that we should just trust the scouts. For me, that implies just blindly assuming that they will get it right. And that in turn shuts down being able to criticise or question those signings people dont agree with. Youve just missed out the signings made that have been crap. And then whilst some of this may be true, those in the middle need time/have scored in knock abouts against scratch teams or have shown signs. Either way, its not like a vast majority/all are undoubted successes to the point where we all withold our opinions and just simply trust them. I would consider the window to be a mixed bag so far, some that look good, some that are mixed and some that look short. Obviously massively hindered by uncompetitive budget issues. Last summer was a mixed bag too. I dont necessarily think the new structure and the increase of analysts etc have led to much improvement in transfers so far that we have seen. 1 Quote
roversfan99 Posted October 28, 2023 Author Posted October 28, 2023 If you wanted a summary of our transfer window. We badly needed a striker this summer. 1 nil down to Swansea at home, 2 signings on the bench, none come on. 3 Quote
G Somerset Rover Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 What’s going on with Ennis? Seemingly back to some sort of fitness yet not thrown on when we’re 1 down at home. Whilst we’re on summer transfers, Sigurdsson is extremely concerning. Barely resembled a footballer these past few matches. Quote
roversfan99 Posted October 28, 2023 Author Posted October 28, 2023 With absolute peanuts, the summer window is looking like proof of you generally get what you pay for. Hill is a solid loanee, Tronstad is a solid, functional midfielder. Beside that, not too much to shout about and zero progress despite 2 bodies through the door in terms of getting a competent Championship striker. Quote
