But it's financial chicanery from a club who already got the bargain of a lifetime out of us and have blatantly used shifty accounting to turn a £30 mill transfer into a £27 million transfer on the books. We should write our clauses better in future and ensure loan fees are amalgamated into any sell-ons, but I'm more than entitled to have a bitter taste in my mouth about it. It’s a great conspiracy…except for the fact that it was Arsenal that wanted the deal structured as a loan with option to buy to help their FFP issues. As Raya’s value would depreciate over his year at Arsenal, if anything, £3m is a poor deal from Brentford’s perspective. Quote

The deal was going to happen, so doing it this way enabled Arsenal to dodge FFP better, and Brentford to make a larger portion of the sale. The fact both sides have something to gain from it doesn't diminish it as a 'conspiracy', it enhances it. I'm not saying they did it with a malicious intent to fuck us, but I suspect (not know, suspect) it was done this way to benefit both clubs in these ways, with zero concern for how it affected us (obviously what Brentford would have wanted from it would have directly negatively impacted us, but of course they won't care about that part). I don't see how a keeper who still has probably 7 years of career left would depreciate notably inside a season. He's only reaching his theoretical peak years now. The market constantly inflates, so at this stage of his career I don't see his value dropping much if at all from that. Playing and becoming number one for a much more promiment club on the other hand, has probably boosted his transfer value. But all of that is immaterial if the deal was always going to happen anyway (unclear from past and present reports if this was guaranteed, but it seems to be at the very least a gentleman's agreement to buy). 1 Quote

I agree he's not in the same category as Shearer, Tugay, Hendry etc but he's a legend in my eyes for what he achieved last season. I don't think anyone is paying over £10m for Sammie so do you then refuse to sell him and stop his only chance of ever playing in the prem? Plus we'll never see anywhere near £8m for him again as he's had a bit of a fluke season if you look back on the rest of his career so far. You are speaking as if our focus should be on ensuring that Szmodics fulfills his dream. You could argue that it wouldnt be fair to say you arent going no matter what, but it has to be a case whereby a pricetag of certainly more than £8m needs to be met. If it is, we accept, if not then we dont and I am sure amidst frustration if it is communicated at the start of the summer then he would just have to accept that no one wanted him enough to bid the asking price. 2 hours ago, bluebruce said: There's a fairly simple explanation to that I think (well, two) - transfer fees aren't paid all at once, and yearly accounts are complex. Granted, fees we pay aren't all at once either, but spend-shy Venkys will probably have wanted money in the bank before we committed. The accounts are what FFP is drawn from, and sometimes you have costs from a couple of years ago still weighing them down, and all kinds of other weird shit the accountants on here know more about. Amortisation, etc etc. Shouldn't be forgotten that Armstrong was sold during Covid either, when we, like everyone else, had a deficit in income. I think from memory this was around £3-5 million? Probably equal, or close, to a year of the Armstrong installments I imagine. So spending the next installment a year after that makes sense in that context. And as always some gets swallowed into other costs, and if the installments were larger than I'm assuming that probably happened to the excess too. So some should have been spent last summer...but we already know Venkys hamstrung us with their ludicrous court case. All the noise from people at the club, official and unofficial, seemed to suggest they were primed to spend a little bit until that crap happened. Again, nobody should get me wrong, the majority of fees received gets hoovered up into losses and we reinvest a pitiful amount of it. But I don't think it's true that money we receive is irrelevant, or that no matter how much we receive we won't spend anything whatsoever, as is often suggested. It will be a shit portion of what we receive and the club/owners are stupid not to recognise that modest spend has yielded huge returns in the past, but we need to maximise sales and it does contribute towards what we can spend (or sometimes just towards not having to sell even more). Amortisation is only really relevant from an FFP perspective whereby any signings fee is spread evenly over the course of his contract, and any sale hits the P&L as a profit or loss in relation to the current net book value of the player, so they are the 2 parts of transfer deals that affect the losses we make. Amortisation also is an artificial figure in that it doesnt correspond to any actual payments, its just an accounting way to decrease the value of an asset over the course of its useful life. I get the installments point from a cash flow perspective and obviously they will differ from deal to deal but I dont think theres any reason to suspect that the installments on our ingoing and outgoing business are significantly different. Take the Wharton deal, if we received say £6m initially then a further £6m across the following 2 years. That payment structure is irrelevant from an FFP perspective, and the sale itself would be purely profit as he didnt cost a fee. But even though we didnt receive it all at once, we have still got a £12m debtor sat on our balance sheet from Palace in addition to £6m in the bank so theres plenty of scope to reinvest. If we bid £3m for someone in 3 installments of £1m, the seller would know that we are receiving money ourselves at those same points. Factoring all this in, both from an accounting/FFP perspective and also an installment perspective, there is no reason to not sign someone upon selling someone else in the same summer. I just think their primary focus has never been about whats going on the pitch. The occasional spending "sprees" just seem to be when maybe they have a bit of interest, the last 2 being upon promotion and funding for a new manager. 2 Quote

The message seems be: get the backroom team in place first, then look at transfers. Also transfer windows tend to be slow during international tournament years, so if do actually do anything, it'll be towards the back end of the window. Thanks Andy. I hope we are looking a couple good free agents out there and hopefully we look to bring in by time pre season training Quote
roversfan99 Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 Eustace had no clue on budget a month ago, Venkys are notoriously slow and since our director of football and other scouts have gone without replacement. I would be amazed. 2 Quote
chaddyrovers Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 Where did Eustace says he has no clue on budget? Our head of recruitment Sean Kimberley and other scouts tbh, most of the scouting and recruitment work will have already be done. Quote

Not too dissimilar to Josh Bowler, perhaps that's what Blackpool see in him as well? Has a lot of skill and goals in him, but maybe not the best defensively and not really an out and out striker, so a bit of a luxury player to have in your team. Quote

Also his contract was ending before Arsenal came in and Raya signed a new contract with Brentford to retain his value. I was thinking if he now doesn't end up signing permanently for arsenal his value could actually have gone up quite a bit after extendeding his Brentford contract and having an excellent year at arsenal. Could actually work out better for us if it falls through and another big club comes sniffing Edited June 3, 2024 by Armchair supporter supremo Quote

Legends are universally beloved, like Crompton, Shearer, Dougie, Clayton, Tugay, Hendry, etc. Sammie is more in the Pedersen, Rhodes, Dack arena of cult hero/fan favourite imo. You missed out Simon Garner!!! Quote
