Doesn't matter. There were no guarantees, that he would do well here. Plenty of footballers have done well in a league, changed clubs, and flopped.  You still dependant on the players around you, or the system being used by different managers etc

There has to be a balance, and the club needs to get that balance right first. 

And i think a big part of the problem was they went all in on youth too quickly in an attempt to cut costs because of the finance issues.

A model was brought in that had 30% of the first team squad as youth and young loans on top of that so it's a massive risk, too much too soon.  Add to that all the back up players to develop Broughton brought in were totally useless and between them made no contribution whatsoever last season.

So no surprise we ended up in the mess we did and such a naive position to throw ourselves into by Waghail, no wonder either that Broughton was potted.

Probably because Wharton is injured long term and O' Riordan is untested at Championship level, leaving us with just Hyam and Carter at the moment as the clubs only proven championship CB's.

Given that we reportedly bid for Keskinen in January, he's likely a find by by the previous recruitment team and Broughton... Whom we've since binned off en masse.

Keskinen is now linked with Middlesbrough and Sunderland. I suspect he's no longer on our radar, and the nature of us expunging Broughton and his recruiters, along with a couple of our failed signings in Telalović and Wahlstedt, suggests to me that the club want to wipe that bit of history clean. I can't see us going down their path given that the recruitment record was, in my view, pretty poor overall.

There’s no gaurentees in life but if you can’t recognise Szmodics was a significantly smaller gamble that Gueye and Ohashi then were just not going to find middle ground here sadly.

I dont doubt that we need 2 centre backs. But we need at least one left sided one and not 2 past their best who are very slow.

Both or at least McFadzean would only be possible in a 3, we dont have a left sided one to play that effectively and you wouldnt want both Batth and McFadzean in the same team.

I don't disagree with that, but I'm saying that any player that signs, whether it's from a top league, or not, there is still a chance they turn out badly or they do well.. one player might fit the system better, another not that well..

When the season comes, we can re visit this discussion, as to whether it was a failure or not.

No success of a player is guaranteed but you give yourself the best possible chances when paying money for lads with at least a bit of pedigree and rep for being the best in their position at their club and in their league.

See Szmods, see Dack, see AA when at Coventry etc but you simply have to pay for them which is something this lot now seem incapable of doing despite the proven success rate.

These lads we are signing now are complete and utter shots in the dark who need to adjust to new country, culture, weather, time before they even start on the football.

Anyone in denail to all that needs to have a rethink.

Does anyone know what the situation with Mafoumbi was at Nantes? His goal scoring record in youth football is impressive. Did they want to retain him? Do the fans rate him? An interesting signing and hopefully a gem uncovered!

He turned down Nantes contract offer to move to England. presumably in order to put himself in the shop window for a Prem move, even via playing vs Prem U21 teams

Pickering is a solid player, reads the game well, rarely lets you down.

Gent is still an unknown, and apparently not a left back, more of a wing back.

We do still need a left back and left sided centre back amongst a lot of other things.

Barnsley have been after Gent all summer, even making a permanent enquiry & that’s from the player himself. A loan seems to suit all parties.

Out of contract next summer, if we had anything about us we would be getting that extended before allowing him out on loan, he'll be on an academy wage at best.
