I echo everyone else’s sentiments to sammy. Thoroughly enjoyed watching him play. He’s a credit to himself and the badge and I wish him nothing but future success.

So as side question, has sammy evolved to club legend status ?

id imagine the younger fans would say yes  with the limited players we have had and the leagues we’ve been in but how do you old fogys feel 😂

Threw this together as I was generally curious about the implied wages/transfer sums for our dealings since the start of 2024 (could extend back to last summer and add in Kaminski, Phillips, Edun etc but this gets shakier the further you go back as would need to make a lot more assumptions about wages, including new contracts/escalators on existing deals, how to net off Ennis/Wahlstedt/Telelovic, etc and the apparent major budget issues seemed to truly arise mid-summer 2023)

Obviously making heroic assumptions about wages/transfer fees, with wage costs usually under-estimated due to bonuses/NI+pensions/signing/agent fees etc, and I made some arbitrary calls on how much to bother counting loans, youth player costs, etc., so feel free to nitpick!

Mainly curious about the scale of transfer fees paid and wage commitments vs wages off the books (some cases may have included partly paying off contracts, so may overstate the savings there) and transfer fees received.

So, ~£36m net transfer income (fair bit subject to Wharton being sold again. I've assumed we've secured another £2m on top of the £18m initial fee) and maybe a net reduction of £1m in forward-looking wage 'commitments' (trickier to interpret, particularly with respect to offloading players with long-term deals left).

Probably some truth in Waggott's claim that our wages have gone up since last year after bringing in a few vets on (one year!) decent wages deals, but obviously net transfer fees are the elephant in the room!

edit: updated as had an error in my first spreadsheet!

An organised club will have seen this happening weeks ago, along with knowing what fee they are likely to get. This hasn’t happened over night and should not be a surprise to anyone.

The recruitment team *should* have targets lined up in each position, along with a very good idea of what each will cost ready to trigger these deals on the completion of the Szmodics deal.

In venky world we start looking for replacements now and chop and change our budget over the next two weeks before blaming anyone other than themselves as to why we were unable to get deals over the line before the deadline.

We aren’t ‘fucked without him’ at all. He’s a bloody good player but we’ve had plenty of them over the years and always managed to carry on once they left.

Yep, where has it got us exactly?

We need to invest the vast majority of the szmodics fee. Whether we will or not will be remain to be seen.

Judging by the lining up of keepers last week I'd say that they've been waiting for the cash influx from szmodics to make a few moves.

We desperately need a keeper and getting a good one will go a long way to determining our success or failure this season.

We need a left back, at least one who can cover Pickering even better if they are an upgrade. Ideally need to be left footed, probably a more defensive minded full back who uses the ball well. A bonus If they can also play cb.

We need a left winger with pace. To give us a counter attacking threat and option. The left winger is clearly the width down left in what we've seen so far this season with the rb the width on the right.

I'd suggest the majority of funds and effort go into getting the above. If the budget allows we can also do with:

Another forward option, either as a striker or a 10 ala szmodics

Another cm. Light on numbers but I count 4 so could potentially manage.

A back up right back. I think Duru, JRC or Carter could deputise and I'd rather see the budget invested elsewhere.

Just as something for us to mull over while we wait for news:

We’ve sold both of our best players in succession within 7 months of each other… who would you say is our best player, now?

Tronstad.

I'm amazed that no one else other than Ipswich are interested in him. Top scorer in the championship and league cup and 3 goals already this season. Mental to me no other mid table prem sides are sniffing around. Given some of the money they spend £10m is pretty low risk for them.

Sammie was incredible last season but before that he had scored 11 championship goals in 73 appearances. He wasn't particularly prolific even in League 1. I don't think one  good season in the championship would be enough to tempt most Prem clubs - especially given his age.

Seems Szmodics haven't been convinced by Eustace to stay... Think he liked Jdt

It’s not Eustace. It’s the way the hierarchy threw away a perfectly good chance of promotion. He would have stayed and gone for it here if he’d have seen some ambition. He’s been here long enough to see what we all see.

It’s going to be a massive weakening of the team thanks to Venkys doing what they always do, year after year. People are trying to dress it up, but face it, it’s sprinkling glitter on a great big bin full of shit.

As it stands the squad is undeniably weaker than last season.  Over £40m incoming, and (being very generous) £1.5m outgoing, not to mention more of our top earners off the books. Whilst Ohashi and Gueye look like they will be useful additions, it's a huge risk to expect them to play a full season and score, say 15-20 each.

Unless we see some substantial investment in the next two weeks (I'm talking £5m - 7m minimum), then the owners should hang their heads in shame.  Successful clubs sell players at the right time before re-investing a portion of that income to ensure that their club is 1. competitive in the league, and 2. have saleable assets in 12 - 24 months' time.

I expect us to stagnate and tread water, plugging the remaining gaps with cheap punts, old has-beens and loans.  Whilst I acknowledge and am initially impressed by the signings of Ohashi and Gueye, they needed to be additions to an already depleted squad, not replacements for anyone who left this summer, let alone our talisman.

We need 5 more, and a minimum of 3 should be cash purchases who improve our squad and have potential to be the next double figure sale. Anything else is inexcusable.

That's a tough argument to make.

At the start of last season nobody expected Szmodics to score 30+ goals.

Ohashi and Gueye already look a damn sight better than Ennis, Telalovic and Gallagher. Weimann looks a very useful addition too.

The big loss is A. Wharton, we simply cannot replace him, but otherwise I'd say the squad is about on par with last season. If we sign a few wingers / a LB / a GK it'll be a much better balanced squad than last season.

Cult status. What he did last season was astounding.

He wasn't here long enough to be a club legend.

Well this definitely stings a little. It's the hope that kills you and after being fairly acceptant that Sammie was on his way, to then see him come off the bench against Derby and score, and then follow it up with a brace in the cup....yeah, I was a touch naïve and thought that he might well end up staying. Nothing will ever hurt more than Shearer going for me, but then I was just a kid at the time and he was my hero.

That being said, this has happened before and it'll happen again, and more often than not in recent years a player steps up out of nowhere just as Sammie did. Let's face it, we were all very much doubtful over him after his first 6 months at the club and look what happened. There's nothing to say that there isn't someone like JRC or Dolan that can't grab the bull by the horns. These are two players that simply HAVE to make more of an impact this season, more so than ever now.

As for the money, how it gets reinvested I think we can all agree that we need to spend some money on a goalkeeper. I'd personally like to see cash buys for a GK and a Craig Conway type winger as we need to try and get that Conway / Gestede style connection going to make the most of Gueye's height. I'd be happy with 2-3 prem loans thrown in after that.

Will be interesting to see how it all pans out in the next 2 weeks.

Absolutely, I'll never forget the sight of him celebrating before he scored to keep us in the league.

If the three new forwards do particularly well then we should be OK in terms of not going down but if not, and if  the rest of the squad is basically no better than before, then we are in trouble.

That squad with Szmodics' 27 goals and Adam Wharton for a large part of the campaign only stayed up on the last day of the season.

Take away Szmodics' contribution and we would have been toast. A lot depends on whether the three new lads can keep it up and on the quality of the recruitment between now and the end of the window.

Very pessimistic about our odds this season.

Dodgy keeper with a dodgy defence in front of him. No pace. No goals.

I don't share the optimism about the new lads. They've played two games against two poor sides.  You get what you pay for. Selling our best players and not adequately reinvesting is going to cost us.
