Despite some improvement this season, he still has glaring errors in his fundamentals. Aside from the howlers, he will also do things you don't expect to see from a professional at this level. Noticed this yesterday. This is not how a competent professional goalkeeper catches a high ball. snip 2025-03-09 14-08-40.webm 3.92 MB · 0 downloads So I coach at youth level and I occasionally do some bits with the GKs. One of the absolute basics is keeping the core of your body behind the ball and, when catching, bring the ball into your core. Pears demonstrates neither of those traits. And I'd like to say that it's an isolated clip of his lack of basic competence...but we all know it's not.

Didn't Fred amass over 400 appearances for PNE and Rovers in Division 1 (now the PL) - and PNE nearly won it one year? Think we signed Fred for a fee of circa £20/30k which at the beginning of the 1960's was 'biggish dosh'. Pears will never ever come close to matching Fred's record as a First Division / PL goalie. I seem to recall an Alf Thornton article where Fred was described as one of the best English goalkeepers never to be capped though if my memory is correct, he did play for England B? The same article mentioned a bad neck/shoulder injury Fred suffered with Rovers which kept him out for some time - don't think he was ever the same after that injury. I was never a fan. Too many times I was left thinking “ how did that end up in the back of the net ? “ However he was like a Gordon Banks tribute act in one game at the dingledome when we lost 1-0. It was Fred v Burnley as the rest of the team had a real off night. He was only beaten by a disputed penalty, and he got a hand to that. A real 10/10 performance. Yes, he was an England “ B “ international.

SuperBrfc
Pears has a shocker of a game yesterday and the fans are rightly giving him pelters on here and elsewhere. The calls for him to be sold and replaced with a proper keeper are growing louder. Then today, we hear that Man Utd are interesting in signing him. Hahahaha. The 'experts' know better than us plebs, eh? Feels like one of those. "What do that lot know, Tony Coton and Man Utd want him". Aye, yeah. It reminds me of the time when Benson was getting roasted on here a couple of years ago. Fans were questioning his role, his ability as a coach and why he appeared to be untouchable. A day or two later, Kaminski appears in an interview praising Benson as being a top keeper coach who aided his development in a big way etc etc. IMO, PR pieces to make us look like idiots, whilst propagating the 'I'll trust the experts, thanks' mindset they want fans to adopt. If there is any truth in it, you can book the taxi right now for tomorrow morning. No need to wait until the summer. I doubt there is genuine interest, though. In fact I thought it was a joke at first. I'm just clinging onto the slight glimmer of hope that this is in fact reality and the worst goalkeeper ever in Rovers history will finally be gone. I was there for Alan Fettis vs Arsenal as well.

When the pressure is off he's an ok goalkeeper but when the pressure is on he absolutely bottles it season after season. You could probably say the same for Hyam aswell. A lot of bottlers in that team.

MarkBRFC
The plan was for Pears to be a long term number one as soon as he signed that new contract in May 2023. You don't sign a deal for that long to sit on the bench. Worryingly, the keepers we have bought in since appear to be even worse.
chaddyrovers
Is Toth good enough to be number 1 here next season? If not then we need a new number 1 and 2.

Eddie
I could understand why United or any Premier League club might see Pears as a good option as an English number 2. He'd be relatively cheap and it's not like they'd expect him to play in anything other than some early round cup games. It would be a dream for us as we desperately need to move on. He is a known quantity at this point and really limited and guaranteed to make a costly mistake or two within any 10 game run. For that reason, I'd rather see Toth - or any other replacement - be given a serious run in the side. This idea that you can plug a keeper in and judge him passed on 90-180 minutes is lunacy. Whenever we do actually move on fro Pears we need to make sure that the new keeper feels that he isn't on trial and that he will have a solid run of games during which he can make a mistake without losing his place. Pears is decent. Does an OK job. But rarely makes outstanding saves and certainly makes more errors than he does game-winning saves.
roversfan99
Hes not decent or ok. Hes poor, a goalkeeper who makes the quantity of mistakes that he does cant be considered as anything other than that.

chaddyrovers
Pears is decent keeper at this level but he is nothing special. He will cost you points but made good saves at times tho that mistake is always there
roversfan99
If he was decent then signing a new keeper wouldnt be suggested as a pressing need in the summer. All keepers make mistakes but he makes so many and its the quantity that continues to cost us. That being said, I have no doubt that he will be the number 1 next season.
