I don’t think there are many “ commanding. Keeper’s “ these days. The game has changed. Packed penalty areas with every outfield player in the box bar the guy taking the corner kick have made “ commanding ” the area much more difficult. You can’t barge your way through to pluck the ball out of the air like the old keepers did. Get two of our smaller forwards on either wing of the half way line when we are defending corners and see how the opposition reacts.

Saw an interview with Ben foster and he states there's no better place to find a box commanding keeper than in the lower leagues. Stated every opportunity to put keeper under pressure is maximised at every opportunity. The long throws in the box, corners on the keeper etc. He reckons every promising keeper should learn the trade there and believes most Top end keepers would struggle with the way football is played down there

He fumbled that corner and got lucky.*

He was badly poised for that first goal.*

Badly positioned for the second.*

Went run about and got lucky.

Got lucky on the one that hit the top of the crossbar.

Apart from that he was ok.

* Defenders were also at fault in these incidents.

So much for a day off from criticising.

Travis was excellent. I rate him a lot more than most on here, I get that he's limited in technical ability but he's a good championship player. Also glad to see him have the armband again.

Agree, and he's not even that limited in terms of ability. He's a classic box to box type whose running game is a big part of what he has to offer, so he was always going to suffer under JDT who wanted something very different from his midfielders.

He can definitely play though, as yesterday's performance showed. Suits how we set up yesterday down to a tee.

Fantastic to start with a home win. Was really impressed with the debutants and the fact that the substitutions all paid off feels particularly good. Some really good stuff overall but certainly areas to improve on.

Seeing Yuki chip the keeper for the 4th brought had me beaming. Szmodics included in the squad was a pleasant surprise, and it felt almost inevitable that he'd come on and make an impact. Thought Dolan was lively and deserved his goal in the 1st half, but wasn't as influential in the 2nd half. Travis probably put in one of his best displays for the club, and hopefully he can build up a solid partnership with Tronstad moving forwards.

Liked a lot of what Gueye seems to be about except for the weak finishing. Was perhaps unlucky with the tight angle in the 1st half, but that chance in the 2nd half I really expected him to thunder it past the keeper, instead it was so feeble. I do however think he will be a real character and terrorise defenders, with his link up play and first touch are a massive improvement on Gallagher based on last night.

A new number 1 GK, a left winger, cover for left back and central midfield feel essential. If Sammie goes then add another player to the shopping list, even if it is as cover for Dolan, who probably deserves to start there if Sammie does indeed leave.

All in all, its a good start and something to build on. Having watched a pretty feeble Norwich side lose to Oxford just now, I see no reason why Rovers can't go to Carrow Road next weekend and get at least a draw.

He was excellent yesterday. It's when he has to play on the half turn that he struggles - if you ask him to play the direction he's facing he's very effective.

Despite the shenanigans off field we all know about, minimal spend, an opposition who will struggle at this level and looking like we could concede from any decent cross into our box, a keeper who could be better, you’ve got to enjoy a night like that.

Trav silky dribbling in one moment (!) and nouty petulance in another, a striker whose first touch isn’t a tackle and to top it all a sublime chip.

Early days. Transfer window not closed (loans?), court case, injuries, long hard season.
So, probably imo, not relegation (not the greatest of leagues?) but not top half.
10 games in let’s see. Xmas let’s see.

As all good managers say after a good win (and also a loss) –let’s not get carried away (either way.)

Both Derby goals came straight after our subs. I dont think its coincidence. I suspect the poor marking was subs not picking up players

That's another thing that has plagued us with various managers it often happened with Mowbrays teams but i suppose a triple sub increases the risk somewhat but it worked out well in the end.

Also worth noting i read somewhere that Derby were set piece specialists in the more direct league below.

Positives:

  • 3 points.
  • 6 goals, well worth the long drive.
  • Didn’t crumble when Derby equalised and we’re on top.
  • Strong substitutions.
  • Good crowd, who were entertained.
  • Pink shirts pretty much sold out in the club shop / online.
  • Everyone loves the opening day hope feeling - ‘we are going up!’

Negatives:

  • Derby defensively were hopeless, we will have tougher challenges.
  • We still prefer to not defend set pieces.
  • I couldn’t spend my £10 online voucher in the club shop.
  • No age 5-6 pink kit sets left, so the more expensive 7-8 (Margot will be wearing that for a few years).
  • We can’t play Derby next week.

Every credit for coming up from Wiltshire to support our club 👏

You know what, at times I struggle to understand the enthusiasm for Rovers, I personally can’t see a future until these owners piss off.

Then I look at last night, the gate was superb for a Sky live game, nobody saw that coming and these lads, just loving life supporting Rovers.

Maybe I have it wrong….

I really relate to this. Another strange transfer window, walking on with my dad and us agreeing that it barely felt like 2 minutes since the stress of last season...

And then the joy of those goals in the second half and the incredible reception that Szmodics received when he was subbed on. Goosebumps. This club is a part of me, through all of the pain and uncertainty.

Whether we have Batth, McFazean or Paulo Maldini playing centre back we need a new keeper. Pears - who’s signing I still question as the son of a mate of Mowbray - was shit when he arrived, shit last season and will continue to be shit this season. He’s shown glimpses of being capable but the inevitable fuck up is always just around the corner. Hell, I’d sell him if someone would pay us any sort of money and try to find two keepers.

Agree.

Wow really didn't know about the TM connection. Makes a lot of sense though.

He is poor.

Anyone would have seen after last season we required someone to replace TK but the club just haven't.

It's so sad.

We've had some class keepers over the years.

The club should have more pride about who gets the no.1 shirt. It's got so much history and significance.

Your 2nd paragraph says it all, nailed it Slam.

I am not saying that the link between Mowbray and Pears' dad isnt there, and didnt play a part.

But he was signed as a sub in the same summer as Kaminski for a nominal fee. Problem being as is the case with quite a few, he has been promoted to a role in the squad beyond his capabilities because the money/competence wasnt there to replace Kaminski when he left.

It was a move born out of pure nepotism and he's been given the number one shirt by default.

He's totally undeserving of being at this club and if he isn't replaced we'll be in a fight at the bottom of the table.

He'll cost us a minimum of 15 goals over the course of the season and that's a conservative estimate.

Yep. And how many points. And how many losses. It's so frustrating
