v Stockport County (a) - 13/8/24 - Carabao Cup

Think Mafoumbi will play. Otherwise some from the first team needing game time plus they who started on the bench. Hopefully alot of goals that's gives confidence going forward even if it's the cup...

County fan in peace. We've got 11 out injured - including Adaramola for 2 months thanks to your captain kicking him in the friendly... - so 12 fit outfield, senior players. Though maybe 2 of those back for next Saturday and 2 shortly after.

In that scenario the manager has already confirmed youth and academy players will be involved. Suspect they'll be a handful of first teamers starting as there are some who didn't make the XI yesterday (where we lost another to be being kicked late on) and others still building minutes from their own injuries in preseason. We've really struggled with injuries for the last year or so! 7 knee injuries currently.

Normally I think most of the fanbase would like us to go for it. It's an exciting fixture - gone are the days of tier 7/8 teams in the FA Trophy - and it's first season in a while when league promotion isn't the expectation but our injury situation just doesn't allow it. Suspect everyone will be happy if whoever makes it out there puts in a decent account of themselves and no one gets injured. I wouldn't read too much into the preseason game for the same reason as we were chopping and changing all preseason.

If you are anywhere near full strength I suspect it will be a long night for us - it could be anyways.

I like the way you play. I follow you vicariously through Welcome to Wrexham. You have some big players which is always an asset. I wish you well for the season. Just not the next match.

By the way, the concept of being kicked in the friendly has a much more positive connotation than being kicked anywhere else. I will adopt that as part of my lexicon of descriptive  phrases 😉

Thank you. Yeah we've played some good stuff under Challinor. Intensity is probably the common denominator and we've had a really successful press and lively midfield when we have played well. We used to be very "get it wide and cross it" but consciously transitioned last year in preseason to a team with more pace who can take on players, like Barry and Olaofe. He loves the word "control" so we try and keep but we also aren't afraid to go more direct. Not sure how much of that you will see tomorrow if we play a bit of a makeshift XI though.

Really? Ohashi will presumably start, but even beyond him, I think Vale and Tyjon are more likely to feature.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Big Mac, Yuki, Hedges, Batth, Weimann and Fadz all start and play at least 60mins for match fitness.

Buckley & Markanday maybe starting also.

Weimann---Fadz----Batth----Pickering

---------------Buckley---Tronstad

Markanday--------Yuki----Hedges

-----------------------Big Mac

I feel like Gueye and Hedges are 2 in particular who could do with the night off.

Hedges had a limited pre season and has come off the back of 2 similar bad injuries and was blowing after half an hour. Gueye also hasnt really had a pre season and looked like he was really feeling the pace after an hour.

Weimann at right back in a back 4 would certainly raise some eye brows!

We have to use games like this to get a feel for how different permutations from our thin squad of players can work together. Not sure how many subs are allowed for this competition, but I'd hope that JE uses them to good advantage, like on Friday evening. It is odd to hear of a club with an even thinner playing squad than our own though! No room for complacency though - this is a banana skin, no doubt, and Rovers will need to do a good job to get a result.

COYB!

Sounds like they have loads of injuries.I think we are gonna give them a hiding, like we did to other lower league teams in the early rounds last year ,when a number of our younger  players played

Id be giving Duru a start at rb and Batty at left back .We shouldn't be risking Brittain and Pickering when we have no senior cover in the building, and Duru and Batty need looking at in a more competitive game

Would seem like a good shout to put that side out for the first half at least. You'd expect that team to have the game sewn up in the first half but you never know.

Depends also on whether Stockport put out a strong team as well.

Ha, yeah I realised after that he was playing wing back previously. Markanday could probably make way for him further up the pitch and maybe start Duru at RB.

I always look forward to these early season league cup games.

Another fun local away day for our fans and an opportunity to see some of the younger/fringe players.

Or they to work out why we signed Markanday!

I think prior to his hamstring tear it was a justifiable gamble (although Mowbray did love his diminutive players), but since then he's lost all his pace and just can't hack in out wide at this level.

Knowing Stockport have their own squad issues, I'd definitely be tempted to give the likes of Mafoumbi a go.

                          Pears

    Duru      Carter      Batth      Batty

                 Buckley    Tronstad

Weimann      Markanday       Siggy

                     Mafoumbi

Bring Gueye and Ohashi on to play 9 and 10 respectively in the 2nd half, see how they play together.

Striker signed from Nantes primarily for the U21s. Scored on his debut for the 21s in a friendly. Supposed to be v.quick.
