Was released by Man Utd a couple of years back, primarily a central midfielder, but has played out wide and also as a full back this season

Out of contract this summer, but Orient have a 1 year option which I am sure they will trigger

Dilan gone from star man in league 2 to bench warming at the upper end of league 1, wonder if a process of elimination is him naturally finding a level mid league 1?

Wtf is going on with Markanday? He got off to a great start, why are they so fast to bench him and not even give him cameos?

Absolutely ruthless with their loanees these League One sides. Think perhaps we should just stop loaning to that level, it's proving a waste of our time each time.

Goddard - lost 4-2 - injured

Montgomery - drew 1-1 - injured

Good to see O'Riordan score yesterday and he had the Man Of The Match award on the whoscored.com website. Hopefully a sign that after a poor first year with us he's turning the corner.

The problem is it's Crewe in League Two. Playing well and scoring goals for Crewe in League Two is precisely where we found him two seasons ago. We can't learn anything from this loan spell. It can act as a bit of a reset from him, but realistically he isn't going to threaten our first team squad before he shows he can also do it at League One level. Where he has failed to make an impact very recently.

We do have another centre back who went from League 2 loans to playing in the Championship without playing regularly in League 1.  So it can be done.

I am not saying it will happen in O'Riordan's case (personally I can see him being surpassed by Atcheson & Litherland, and then shipped out), just that it is possible

Starts this evening for

Markanday - lost 2-0 - withdrawn after 15 minutes (looks like a tactical change due to a sending off)

Garrett - lost 1-0 - withdrawn less than 10 minutes into the 2nd half, just after Tranmere went 1-0 down.  The fans did not seem at all happy with the decision demonstrated by boos at the manager and shown on this threadAdkins was sacked after the game

On the bench

Wood - lost 3-1 - came on with 15 minutes to go - loan due to end tomorrow

Not involved in matchday squad

Batty - won 1-0 - currently injured

Olson - drew 3-3 - won on penalties - currently injured - Rory Finneran played the 2nd half for Newcastle U21s

Montgomery - won 4-0 - currently injured

Play Wednesday

Vale - score/update - currently injured

Play Thursday

Duru - score/update - possibly still injured - game on Sky Sports +

Play Friday

Saadi - score/update

- Wouldn't be surprised if O'Riordan's cast off in the offseason, but regular L2 football is probably better than PL2 football + mostly sitting on the bench the rest of the year.

21 is still quite young for CB... For comparison, Scott Wharton was 22 (turning 23) in his last L2 loan the year before breaking into the squad in 2020-21 (and then tearing his achilles...). Carter was also 22 (turning 23) in his final L1 loan at Portsmouth. Moving to another tier of talent, Tosin was 22 during his loan. In contrast, THB and Branthwaite were 18, albeit obviously not ready at the time... Lenihan was 20 during his Burton loan.

It's certainly been a disappointing year for O'Riordan, but I think it'd be harsh to rule him out already. A Cambridge supporter told me he thought he looked talented, but had some bad luck with a few key mistakes amid a freefalling squad.

- The article also includes a quote from Leyton Orient's manager - Rovers head coach contender Richie Wellens 😉 - on Markanday:

“The squad is good. You only have to look at the likes of Dilan Markanday, he has been unbelievable since he came in.

“It has been difficult to get him on in the last couple of games because of the physicality of the opposition and the way the games were going.

“You look at Lincoln and Wrexham – every time the ball goes out of play, it is in your box. Every time it is a long throw, a corner, you need to match them up size-wise. It has been difficult for Dilan but his time will come.”

Perhaps not a huge endorsement that he doesn't think Markanday can handle the most physical sides, but certainly some kind words and at least it's clear that he's not been outright frozen out.

I read that as it being a height thing, rather than him not being able to mix it up physically, so Markanday is less likely to play against clubs who go more direct, set pieces etc

Exactly, he's a poor athlete. He'll never make it in the Championship.

Just to play devils advocate (and I am not at all comparing the abilities of these 2 players), Messi is on the shorter side too, and it hasn't hampered him too much
