Well there's nobody else we can put in midfield next season so he'll be starting every week.

Good lord we're in trouble next year when most of these lads will be starting / filling out the bench at Ewood.

I'm glad Batty has got regular minutes (he desperately needed it) and Duru seems to have shone - but beyond that, bloody hell. We've clearly not got anyone close in the Academy that can come in next year and help us out.

I always thought he looked neat and tidy with the right amount of aggression - but he needed regular minutes (which he wasn't getting here).

For Bristol Rovers and Tranmere not to play him though - bloody hell.

Atcheson (18) & Litherland (19)  look to me to be capable of becoming Championship standard (at least) centre backs.  I expect one of them to be in the first team squad next year as 4th/5th choice, and the other to get a League 2 loan.

The academy players with the most potential are probably Tyjon, Dunn & Higgins, who are still 16 (although Tyjon turned 17 a week ago) so too early for them to be loaned out.  Obviously the first 2 of them have only 1 year left on their current scholarship deals, and the other has yet to even sign a scholarship deal as things currently stand

As well as the 2 full backs that you have mentioned, Powell (19)  also looks like a decent attacking left back.  Others that we may see in the next couple of years are England U18 keeper Nick Michalski, & young midfielders James Edmondson (19), & Harley O'Grady-Macken (20)

That's pretty much how I see it too - which again points to the fact there's no clear immediate support coming from the Academy next year.

On the bench

Markanday - lost 2-1 - came on for the final 10 minutes with the score at 2-1

Not involved in matchday squad

Garrett - lost 3-2 - unsure if injured or dropped

Can only assume that we have an injury in midfield (or something ridiculous like Ismael/Waggott telling Travis and Tronstad that they have no future at the club because they want a contract extension)

Expand

No mention of any injuries to central midfielders on the Boro preview. As you say, could be as ridiculous as Trav/Tronstad being told to find a new club.

Even if it is something as daft as that, is Montgomery really the next in line though?

I would have thought O'Grady-Macken & Edmondson would have been above him in the pecking order? (Low bar I know)

National League North is obviously not a high level, but Montgomery has been a consistent starter across both his loans this year (17 starts with Marine and 6 starts + 1 sub with Chorley) and bagged a couple goals (including that screamer).

He's turning 21 at the end of next month, so the thinking may simply be he'll need to show if he's anywhere near first-team level pretty soon. This season has obviously gone off the rails, so perhaps give him a couple sub appearances as the season winds down... O'Grady-Macken and Edmondson are a couple years behind him.

https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2024/february/02/kristi-signs-new-deal/ He's signed through to 2025-26, plus an option.

Even if he's only flogged off to a L1/L2 club in the end, that's still a relative success for the Academy (and him!). Small beer, I know...

Unless he's planning to give him minutes tonight (or there was a deadline for recalling him) it seems pretty stupid to recall him now. Just bring him back when he's going to get minutes or is actually needed, and let him get more experience in the meantime. Weird one.
