According to the LT, Markanday was at Ewood tonight in the director's box. Possibly about to be recalled?

Can't recall him until January anyway.

Probably just catching up with folk, seeing how his loan is going etc.

Still gets them out playing football with men though, even a short spell at that level is more beneficial than academy football all the time.

I have no experience in footballer youth development but the argument that any men's football at, seemingly, any time in the season, is beneficial leads me to wonder why Premier League clubs don't send their youngsters to non-league on a regular basis to toughen them up? In fact, as I understand it, they try to match their best young players with the highest standard possible and teams that play the 'right way' for their charge's development. Or so they say.

Ultimately, however, a basic requirement, I think, for a player's development is stability. So, if they do go on loan, whatever the level, they need enough time to adapt and gain experience. That need for stability also applies to the U23s team. The approach at the moment seems too scatter-gun and unstable for me..

Thanks again, @KentExile, we all owe you a pint/coffee!

Randomly met a Cambridge supporter who said he quite liked O'Riordan when he started, but the team was in free fall to start the year and a number of key mistakes made him an easy cut. Now on a 3-game win streak, so hard to see him getting back in the lineup soon... they have a couple cup games next week, so perhaps he'll at least get some game time for those. This article from last week: https://www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk/sport/boss-backs-o-riordan-to-take-his-next-opportunity-9388487/ (newsletter-walled, I accessed it by disabling javascript) suggests Monk hasn't completely iced him out, or at least he's still being complimentary about him in public.

On the multitude of low non-league loans, I've also been curious about them, but most are only 1-month loans where they're getting a handful of games against 'men', which is perhaps a helpful change of scenery compared to u-18/u-21 football, and usually relatively local, so I wonder if they're still training with/under the watchful eye of Academy staff and probably still able to live at home? Have to assume some are players who probably aren't up to snuff anyway and/or have agents/parents impatiently pushing for loans. (Jackson, if you're reading this, perhaps a question to pose to the Academy staff to get their take!)

Interesting read about O'Riordan, thanks for that.  Fingers crossed he gets back in the team and kicks on

RE low non league loans.  Most teams in the 7th tier and below (and I believe all of the teams in the 6th tier and below that Rovers have loaned players to) are not full time, and therefore, as they are all local loans, there is ample opportunity for them to train (and play) with our U21s/U18s

How many of those players have actually been playing in our u21s/u18s since their loans?

Off the top of my head, Atcheson has played 2 or 3 for the U21s (mainly in weeks when Marine have not had a match).  Boggan featured for the U18s whilst away, and I am pretty sure that Michalski and Eastham have both also featured for the U21s whilst away on loan.

However, my main point, the part which wasn't in brackets, was that the players away on these short term loans, will have plenty of opportunity to train with the U18s/U21s

Starts tonight for

Garrett

Batty

Edmondson

Garretts and Batty's games are live on Sky

I see Batty got subbed after 12 minutes in a 2-1 win so must have been injured. Garrett played the full match in a 3-2 defeat to Exeter.

Macclesfield won 3-2 away to Matlock to go 10 points clear at the top (12 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses, great start for them) but I can't find any proper match details to know how much Edmondson played.

What is the extent of Batty's injury ?

Accrington haven't stated.

All that is known from reports and twitter feeds is that he was subbed off after 11 mins.  Maybe a precaution, maybe an injury, maybe even, given the side that Accrington put out (11 academy players named in the 18), it may even have just been a case of starting him to get around selection rules for a low priority cup game (EFL trophy sides have to contain at least 4 players who started the previous league game)

An interview in the LET with U21 manager Mike Sheron today, Whilst the headline & main focus was Tyjon and his international exploits, he mentions in passing about the reasoning for the outgoing loans

“The philosophy of the club is trying to get some of these younger players out there rather than just waiting for 21s football,” he explained.

“Go out there and try to show that you are good players, determined, have good physicality about you and can compete.

“But it is not about physicality, sometimes it is about your brain and how you can be successful while maybe not having that physicality.

“There are always ways of trying to get better and being effective, and that is hopefully what they are learning.”

Maybe, Mike Sheron should ‘get out there’ too and stop waiting around for relegation/jeopardy-free U21 fixtures? In all seriousness, it has some logic but not, in my opinion, the scattergun manner occurring now. More reasonably, some planning takes place and a select group are sent out early for a whole campaign away - with time to adapt. The remainder stay behind to build a team unity and grow together at U21s. Then, in January, you revisit.

I await examples, beyond the anomaly of David Raya, of a player showing serious improvement or added value after a spell in the national league/confernce. I don’t doubt it’s useful for an Eastham or Saadi who’s leaving. And maybe it could be so for a player who has a whole season to adapt and gain experience.

Edit: Beyond this point, there’s not much signs of the levels of serious talent seen before on the conveyor belt - though there’s hopes for a few and Duru and Tyjon are on the fringes. The club are surviving off academy graduates and if that dries up, the future looks bleaker. Moreover, none of the new U21s recruits are making too much of an impact, though, again it’s still early for them.

The U21s are in a situation where they are "used to getting beaten". I don't see how this is good for anyone (on the playing side) at the Rovers.

The U21s record since the start of October is won 2, drawn 2 and lost 2, far from stellar, but not quite "used to getting beaten"

The U18s on the other hand have won only once this season and that was in mid September

Starts today for

Batty won 2-0 (FA cup game which cup ties him, which implies he will remain there for the rest of the season)

Edmondson scored the 4th in a 5-1 win

Eastham drew 1-1

Honor lost 4-3, conceding 2 late goals

Michalski lost 2-0

On the bench

Farkas came on for the final 10 minutes in a 2-0 defeat

Not Involved in squad

Markanday Not involved in FA cup game, which may imply a January recall (won 3-1)

Garrett Not involved in FA cup game, which may imply a January recall (taken to extra time by Weston Super Mare)

O'Riordan Not involved in FA cup game, which may imply a January recall (won 1-0)

Wood lost 5-0

Davies won 3-0

Edit - Not really worth its own post, Saadi remained on the bench throughout Sundays game in a 3-2 win

At present, I'd certainly be recalling all three. Markanday because that level is proving beneath him as I expected, and the other two because they're simply getting nowhere near enough game time.
