Backroom DE. Posted August 31, 2024 Backroom Share Posted August 31, 2024 Incredible result against 13 men. We win that with competent officials. Well done to Eustace and the lads on a display that puts to rest the embarrassing memories of our last two matches against this lot. Ref and that linesman should never officiate at this level again. Disgraceful.
Popular Post New Jeru
Rovers survived Tony Harrington’s starring role for Burnley at Turf Moor, as the man in black disallowed a seemingly perfectly good goal and sent off Pape Gueye amid a flurry of bookings for the visitors. Burnley dominated the opening stages and the early pressure told after just 10 minutes when Jaidon Anthony beat Callum Britain down Burnley’s left wing and delivered a cross which found Lyle Foster alone in the centre of the box. Dom Hyam had come across to fill the near post area, leaving his man unattended to power a header beyond Aynsley Pears. For much of the first 20 minutes it looked like Burnley might have an easy afternoon, with Rovers unable to impose themselves physically. But the momentum shifted after 23 minutes as Gueye knocked down a long ball into the path of Andi Weimann. It sat up perfectly and Weimann unleashed a beautiful controlled strike which arced beyond James Trafford from 25 yards. Controversy followed as Lewis Travis played in Tyrhys Dolan with a superb curling pass in the right-wing channel. Dolan went through on goal and tucked it beyond Trafford, but the assistant referee appeared to give offside. Replays showed that neither Dolan nor Ryan Hedges were offside, and Hedges had also been brought down by Maxime Esteve, leaving Rovers aggrieved not to take the lead. Gueye was booked for an innocuous foul on Foster, and Travis made a tackle that would have been a brilliant derby day crowd pleaser in another era, but today it brought another flourish of Tony Harrington’s yellow card. Shortly after, Hannibal also found himself in the book for a challenge which landed his boot on Gueye’s shin. This the clearest of a couple of fouls by the former Manchester United man. The remainder of the first-half was controlled by Burnley but without seriously threatening to restore their lead. Early in the second-half a Joe Worrall’s failed clearance proved more threatening than Weimann’s cross, as it fell to Brittain whose shot could only find the stand. And Rovers continued to fashion chances as Gueye played in Dolan who forced a save from Trafford, spreading himself to deny the Rovers attacker to save with his right boot as the ball arrowed toward the bottom corner. The sending off brought a premature end to the target man’s afternoon, having walked a tightrope with the officials but provided a crucial physical presence for Rovers, battling with the Burnley defenders and dragging his team up the field with his strength holding up the ball. Blackburn continued to draw the ire of the referee as Brittain saw yellow for a foul on Anthony and Hayden Carter joined him in the notebook for a lunge on Hannibal as he stepped into midfield. Then Harrington intervened again, issuing a second yellow card to Gueye for making a yellow card gesture after the Senegalese striker was brought down by Esteve. Hannibal later survived a similar incident after conceding a foul and proceeding to debate the matter with the assistant, but having not received a second yellow found himself substituted soon after. Hedges in the book for a late challenge as Conor Roberts cleared down the line. In the ensuing flare up, Luca Koleosho was booked after shoving Travis in the chest and later Foster booked for a challenge on Yuki Ohashi as Harrington. Rovers were disciplined, preventing Burnley from mustering a single shot on target following the red card, and debutant Owen Beck in particular put in a very mature performance at left-back. Even the much-maligned Aynsley Pears overcame a shaky start to make a couple of timely interventions as the game drew to a close. In the late stages Dolan and Ohashi’s tireless running continued to allow John Eustace’s side to relieve the Burnley pressure but without fashioning any clear chances to win the game. Burnley substitute Manuel Benson had an opportunity to snatch a late winner from a free-kick close to the edge of the area, but curled his effort over the bar. And at the other end, Ohashi played in Travis following a slip by CJ Egan-Riley, but the Rovers captain couldn’t find the target. Brownhill wasted another Burnley free-kick, shooting over the bar with the final touch of the game after another soft foul. In truth, it never really felt like Rovers were desperately hanging on and they will be satisfied at having defied their numerical disadvantage to take a very creditable point.
