Tyrone Shoelaces
Just watching that little clip again. That’s a great chest trap/pass down to a supporting player when he was penalised for being pulled over early on in the game Regarding defensive headers - I was alway taught to head wide, long and high to clear the ball. Wide = away from from the danger area and high = to give yourself time to get out at the ball. He does those things really well.

chaddyrovers
1 hour ago, roversfan99 said: You say that chaddy, but you was also very critical of him and seemed happy to move him on. And to be fair, he looked very poor for quite a while. Offered absolutely no goal threat, technically poor and his hold up play was nowhere near what it has become. One thing that pleased me in particular last night that might sound strange was that his 2 goals and his shot off the bar all came from his feet. Hes always clearly been a threat in the air but you cant just rely on that and up to now his finishing with his feet has been so poor. Either scuffed/miscued or not in the corner and telrgraphed to the keeper. All of his goals up to now have been headers but you cant just solely rely on that and it was good to see him finishing the ball so cleanly. He probably wont ever be prolific but with what else he brings, to go from seldom if ever scoring even to scoring say 10 a season (might struggle to get that many this season) and doing the other things he does makes him a good option to have for sure. I was certainly like you wrong for thinking he had nothing to offer at this level. I was only judging based on what I was seeing but thankfully hes come on leaps and bounds and has added goals to his game. I wanted more from Gueye, but for me, a I said his confidence was knocked after the Burnley game. I think it took him a while to gain that back Gueye's recent form I would put down to 3 things, one confidence since he scored at Sheffield, Working hard his training and The staff working with him. Gueye has 7 gaols so far this season, so another 3 goals in 14 games should be possible. Gueye's hold up play, plus link play is getting better. When you was anticipating January you definitely seemed happy to let him go. You wanted our strikers to be a new signing, Ohashi and Leonard. Its ok, like me you are probably surprised and didnt see it coming. But lets not make out like it was just me.

We all thought "what the hell have we done?" when we first signed him! All of us saw something in him but doubted it would ever be enough. We all took to him because of his enthusiasm and his physicality which we hadn't seen at Ewood for years. We wanted him to do well but feared he wouldn't. Cries of "worst player I've ever seen in a Rovers shirt" were quite common. So no-one should feel ashamed about that, he was like a fish out of water. But, for once, the Gods have shined on us and we have a real centre-forward leading the line (and, bonus-- assisting the defence). We've either struck lucky or coached brilliantly---who cares? Let's enjoy him while we can.

Sure, although 'if he keeps playing like the best game he has had all season' is a big, big ask. I'd happily settle for how he's been playing the last month and a bit. Lancaster Rover
14 hours ago, CottonTownBoy said: A few years ago, I was a Lancs U16 cup final, where one team had a spine of big, strong lads who were dominating the game. The rest of them played off them. I was stood near a Rovers scout, so I wandered over and started talking to him. When I mentioned that these "big strong lads" must have caught his attention, he replied "No, Academy's don't want them any more, as they are seen as too big and heavy and it's all about being as light as possible these days. We are tasked with looking for little Lionel Messi types. These lads might be better footballers and win you games but the Academy's are not interested and would turn them away if I brought them in. The last manager we had who liked big, strong players was Allardyce." So now we have a big, strong lad upfront who has come from Africa and is coming on a treat and might be worth a small fortune someday, might our Academy think twice about turning away big, strong footballers or will the current malaise continue. Answers on a postcard. That’s just categorically untrue of what academies are currently looking for. In Cat 1, 2 and 3 academies over 85% of players are September - January births with a similar number having a biological/developmental age which outstrips their birth age. So the idea we’re recruiting small players is rubbish. The current trend is selecting the oldest and biggest in each year group. There are a few outlier clubs/players but look anywhere cat 1 - cat 3 and you’ll see the same
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted February 14 Moderation Lead Share Posted February 14 As it seems like a few are excavating the past at the moment, I'll confess, I saw nothing in this guy for a long time and had almost totally written him off. Luckily, I'm not arrogant enough not to have my mind changed on things and I'm happy to admit I got it wrong. The lad has been a colossus and a real warrior of late and I'm delighted for him. He could end up being pivotal for us in the run in. It's also great to see from his POV, as he's evidently quite a confidence player.

I'm am delighted to be proved wrong and say so with Gueye.
Tyrone Shoelaces
In his early games there was always bits and pieces of his game that looked promising. He had a decent touch and as I said earlier he could pass the ball nicely etc. Plus he was a giant who won lots of balls in the air. I was prepared to give him more time. The sending off at Burnley seemed to affect him badly and it took him months to get going again. Since Xmas he’s possibly been our best player and the other night he looked unstoppable. It’s hard not to like the lad, he’s one of those players who seems to really want to be out there. Backroom Tom Posted February 14 Backroom Share Posted February 14 I will say with Gueye I have doubts on if he’ll be here next year, not because we will be fighting off suitors that we can’t refuse but I worry about him settling longer term. Theres been a few things written about his family not living over here and him finding that a bit tough, I could see him moving again. Hope not of course

In early games, they were signs of decent hold up play and bits like that, but as I have said before to yourself previously, for me his sending off against the dingles massively affected him as a player and confidence. In the last 2 months, we seen a vast improvement in Gueye's performances and the improvement in his games. I am pleased for him and I'm delighted he has proved me wrong.

I never thought Brereton-Diaz would make an impact let alone score 22 goals in a season and thought Pears was finished after Wigan... Travis as well has gone from a modest player to a top one. I am just surprised so many wrote Gueye off as he has such obvious (to me anyway) qualities to consistently beat defenders.

moerpho
Love this guy. And love the fact that after both goals on wednesday he went right for the emblem on the chest and held it up. Proud to be a rover! Long may it continue.
