Was he?

His best ever Championship season was a small sample 5 goals in 17 games for PNE. Apart from that, his best season was the one before he joined us, where he got 9 in 40 for Doncaster in this league. So unless he got his knees knackered pretty much right at the end of that season, the suggestion he was finished makes no sense, he was basically at his peak.

All his other seasons in this league, he never scored more than 6, which he did twice, in 30 games and in 43 games. Those are 1 in 5 and less than 1 in 7.16 ratios respectively. For a striker. And those were some of his best ever seasons. He spent most of his career in the Championship, and scored 5 or more goals in just 5 seasons. All the others he scored 3 or less. So I think the claim he was a competent Championship striker is also generous. If he played up top here with those numbers, we'd have said he was shit, get rid.

Great he got the goal yesterday, seems such a likeable guy. Still think his performance was well below what we saw up until the Burnley sending off. But hopefully now with his confidence up he can go back to his early form!

His goal reminded me of some of Sutton's goals for us, especially our 2nd goal at West Ham away in the cup in the 90s - grit, strength and determination to force himself past the defender - only one player winning that ball.

No one else in the team is scoring goals like that, and what I like about us this season is we're scoring all sorts of goals, rather than previous seasons where we just saw repeats of Diaz or Szmodics cutting in from the left on a breakaway.

One of Gueye’s issues might be positioning. When the cross first went in, he was moving away from the goal, as if he didn’t fancy competing with the defenders. When it came in again, from JRC (nice control from him), Gueye wasn’t really on the move much - but his strength and height seemed to win the day.

What always amuses me about 90s clips is that away fans always obediently sat down in these new fangled seated away ends… not quite the case now 😅

For all his flaws, Gueye doesn't remotely strike me as someone who is afraid to mix it with defenders. I expect he was trying to peel off the defender, which is a common and often effective tactic.

I've been talking about Gueye in terms of "he's a lot to learn but he can be coached".

When I got round to looking at his age I was astonished to find he is 27!!

Surely at that age he ought to be the finished article ( in which case someone else would have bought him!)

Not as optimistic about his future now. We really are are on the breadline aren't we?

Everyone was told exactly what he was when we bought him - a big, athletic, disruptive CF (one who wins headers, holds the ball up and brings others into play) that can't finish. 

That's exactly what we've seen from him.

yuki finding out that english football is`nt the polite kickabout that it is in japan,he`s taken a lot of fouls this season but worked his arris off as usual

Great performance today dominated the Luton defenders and won practically everything he went in for. Did some good defensive clearances as well. Good to see something from him and let’s hope it continues like this

To think people called, and still do, Jason Roberts a donkey..  Gueye is such a likeable guy.  Has some great attributes, I do hope it clicks for him..  He seems pretty decent running with the ball which suprises me a lot..

I think there's a lot to be said for character. The lad appears to actually be proud to wear the shirt. He's aggressive, wants to win, has a relationship with the fans. I love him.  A welcome, addition.  We've had much worse.  We've had better. For me, seeing someone wear the shirt that wants, and is proud to wear it is brilliant.

We won well yesterday & Beck got him out of jail but let’s be honest, Sam Gallagher misses that & we’d all be up in arms. If Rovers are genuinely serious about promotion Gueye needs to be no more than a last 10 minute impact sub. We are crying out for a Danny Graham type player.
