People often refer back to picking out isolated examples of players who started slowly but became regular sources of goals. Of course nothing as of yet can be definitive but those examples are the minority, there will be far more examples of players who came in, looked out of their depth initially and ended up barely improving if at all.

With Szmodics, I think the discussion was more complex. He was our main signing and questions were more about whether it was the position we needed to sign someone who wasnt a regular for a while

If people write him off and he ends up scoring plenty, great, but people shouldnt be deterred from giving an opinion. If someone said that say Beck is a really good signing, you wouldnt have the opposite argument ie dont call him a success because he might nosedive.

He was abysmal against Watford and has been poor since August. Still think I saw enough in August to think he will be a good signing if he refinds that form.

Id say we are really way too early to come to definitive judgements. Just go and have a look at what people were saying about Szmodics in October 2022...

A big difference is that Szmodics could put the ball in the net even before his overall play improved.

He's a striker and at no point has he shown he can shoot! He does give us height and physicality up-front and we've really missed that.

I was quite enthusiastic about him in his early games but at this point he doesn't look the answer to me.

I think he’s decent and will come good, some of his flicks ons and hold up play has been really good, his passing terrible and finishing yet to be proven by a long shot but I think there’s glimpses there

his finishing ain't been proved with long shot , short shot or even a header.

Fair enough, but there are other examples of players who took a while. He still looks considerably better than Brereton was when he first arrived also. We all live in hope.

But Eustace should certainly have a proven striker top of his January list.

He doesn’t look better than anyone we’ve ever had IMO.

Dont forget that Brereton was 19 when he signed.

That's my greatest concern with Gueye, whilst we've had players who've been unsuccessful from a goals point of view they've all shown the basic skills required to be a champ player. Gueye looks so far off it from a technical point of view, admittedly I'm now primed to look for his mistakes but I don't remember a single time he took the ball in and popped it off or was able to move forward with the ball on Saturday. As I've said there were at least 4 times when he's received it from a throw or simple bounce pass and he's played it straight out of play of the ball has bounced off him. I fear his touch is just miles and miles off it and at this stage in his career it's not going to change!

I don't buy Gueye being a complete donkey. He had three assists in his first four games (really should have been four, apparently the one he provided in the Derby game didn't count in the official statistics) and offered some good and savvy center forward play in those games, particularly against Burnley before the red card.

Let's not forget all the posts about recruitment team deserve huge credit etc.

As others have posted its a confidence game, even more so with strikers. He's off the boil but let's keep getting behind him as we need him to at least equal Gallys figures!

We have few other options.

That's the thing, when everybody was praising the recruitment team after a few games, I felt it was premature. But at the same time inevitable we got carried away with it a bit. Likewise inevitable we feel deflated about Ohashi and Gueye lately, when they've been poor.

We won't be able to render a full judgement until they've been here far longer, but of course we're going to form opinions along the way.

I like him. He's a problem for Championship defenders, more so than Gallagher imo.

Were you at Watford on Saturday? Fans were laughing he was so bad. The problem is how do we get him off the books and who would take him?

He has a decent first touch and draws defenders in with his size - which is fine for a target man. It's our wingers that are the problem, they are slow and can't cross - which isn't fine for a winger! When I see people creating chances for him and missing those chances... I'll agree.

Gueye is in some ways similar to Gestede who was not a brilliant all round footballer but was a robust “old style” centre forward thriving on crosses and early balls into the box.
Gestede must have seen a bit of himself in Gueye and ought to be in a position to assist the head coach to get the best out of him if not in terms of tactics but with personnel in the next transfer window.
Gueye must be crying out for a MK2 Craig Conway.
