Things we’d have missed if VAR had always existed

Some counter-histories to debate:

- Speedie’s playoff final penalty not given, possibly missing promotion. 

- Anfield ‘95 and VE Day: Berg not sent off, no penalty to ManYoo, we win the league at a boring canter at Upton Park.

- Furphy’s unbeaten run: MacNamee gets sent off every time he plays.

- Dunny’s Dingle Heartbreaker.

When we kept winning 1-0 at Newcastle with handball goals in the noughties.

Half of the penalties Simon Garner won.

Martin Olson hating Burnley.

And, possibly, Shearer’s VE Day goal.

VAR may have resulted in us winning the World Cup 3-2.

If VAR was around back then England wouldn't have even got to the final.

I’d agree, in my opinion not all of the ball crossed all of the line, but it was close. Scratch that off, the score was still 3-2 and the best team won. I speak as somebody who backed West Germany to win the cup after I saw them demolish Switzerland 5-0. I got 10-1 at the time.

I've forgotten what the offside rules were in 1966 but Hurst was on a run into the box with an Argie ahead and to his right.

Mysteriously ? Did you watch the game ? He wouldn’t have lasted 5 minutes in todays football. He wanted to referee the game as well as play in it.

The guy to his right in played him on. Argentina had some really good players but their discipline let them down badly that day.

Rattin was a dirty player. He deserved to be sent off. 

Argentina got their own back with Maradona's handball goal. Now that was real theft

Whilst the true theft of the century from Maradona would never have stood and we'd have reached the semi final. Since Argentina won it, perhaps that would have been us and we wouldn't have been waiting since 66 for a trophy. No bullshit disallowing of Lampard's goal against Germany. Manure wouldn't have dominated the 90s as much, because the amount of decisions they got in their favour were an utter farce. We may have even won another title. No disgusting Tevez goal. We would have beat the Dingles yesterday.

See, for everything we would have lost, we would have gained something else, and then some I'd argue, as we have had a lot more BS decisions against us than for us, for my money. And both categories would have been fairer.

Manure were clearly bribing the refs back then, nobody can convince me otherwise, so perhaps. But I doubt they would have been as blatant. It's much easier to say 'oh the ref and linesman missed it/saw it differently' than it is to say 'the ref, linesman and a whole panel of officials missed it/saw it differently after watching slow-motion replays from numerous angles, the same ones you saw, and after using line technology'. Of course we still get mistakes and controversies, but if one club was to consistently get far more of them in their favour than the others, for such a sustained period, with such oversight in place, I think there'd at least be serious investigations.

It would appear they’re still at it. Yesterday’s ref for the Manu v Liverpool game, Antony Taylor, is from Wythenshaw.
Imagine if the ref for our game at the Dingledome came from Rose Hill !

Not sure him supporting a Manchester club and being from Manchester means he won't have any bias to a Manchester club. Maybe Altrincham hate Manure, I dunno or care, but if they do then that's also a bias.

IMO a ref shouldn't have any geographical or supporter connection to the clubs involved, including rivalries. Not saying this chap is biased, and I didn't watch that game, but just seems the best way for avoidance of doubt.

It should also be about protecting the referee. He has to live in an area populated by Rags and will have to go about his daily business. There will always be the odd nutjob who bears a grudge should they perceive a decision has gone against them. The rule of thumb when I was on that you wouldn't referee a team from your home county unless it was a local derby. One of the reasons I believe they do it now is because there are only a handful of referees who are good enough to do the top games.
