Things we’d have missed if VAR had always existed

Recommended Posts

Maybe 2003 or so, didn't EH Diouf (for Bolton) dive to win a late penalty in front of the Darwen End, which they converted? Not that it made a difference in the grand scheme of things, but it annoyed me. Seem to remember that fixture went through a spell of the hosts never winning too?

And my memory may really be playing tricks here, but for one we got away with, Sir Big Brad vs. Les Ferdinand down in Cardiff? If that wasn't a penalty it was very close!

It should also be about protecting the referee. He has to live in an area populated by Rags and will have to go about his daily business. There will always be the odd nutjob who bears a grudge should they perceive a decision has gone against them. The rule of thumb when I was on that you wouldn't referee a team from your home county unless it was a local derby. One of the reasons I believe they do it now is because there are only a handful of referees who are good enough to do the top games.

When I was a teenager (mid 90's) I remember talking to a Premier League ref - can't remember his name. He was really nice though and interesting too. He said that he was a Sheff Wednesday fan so would never get their or Sheff Utd games, but all others, Leeds included, were on.

Back to the thread. Rovers would have made the playoffs in 2022-23. Some decisions that went against Rovers in the last few games were ridiculous.

Wasn’t the one in Cardiff Nils Eric Johannsson blatantly fouling Teddy Sheringham?

Replaced by celebrations when a decision that went against us got overturned.

There is nothing to replace the celebration when Rovers score a goal. None of this hanging around whilst someone looks into it. The joy of actually going to a game is slowly being removed.

I'm much happier if they take away the gnawing, crushing pain and sense of injustice that can last for a week, of when a bullshit decision costs us a game of football. I'll happily lose the spontaneity of instant gratification and certainty to lose this too.

I don't know. Presuming the full 90 is still up from when Rovers broadcast it on Youtube during Covid I may have to rewatch it in full to be sure. What a pity!
