Recommending players I've not watched full games of again, but when we inevitably do look in the bargain basement if PL2 loans, Kuol at Newcastle might be an option.  Has played the men's game at some level, is lightning quick and needs minutes coming back from injury.  Was highly rated at some point

We sold Szmodics for AT LEAST three times what we paid for him and he kept us up last year; Brittain and Hyam are mainstays in an excellent back 4; and Tronstad is literally our best player.

The narrative on here at times is baffling. 

 

I hope he gets games and starts developing, he's been hard done to at Cambridge.

That is LITERALLY the market we're in. We have buttons to spend so we have to snatch good young players from the lower leagues (and abroad) and hope they can step up. 

We evidently can't compete for with our fellow Championship teams for actual paid transfers. The team we've put out this season is absolutely pitiful in terms of investment.

Just looking at the team we put out last game...

Pears - 500k from Boro, Championship.

Brittain - 1 million ish from Barnsley as they got relegated to League One

Hyam - 1.5 million ish from Coventry, Championship

Batth - free after leaving Championship Norwich.

Beck - loan from Premiership Liverpool

Tronstad - free from Vitesse in the Eredevisie

Buckley - academy graduate

ACD- loan from Brighton in the Premiership

Weimann - free after leaving Championship Bristol City

Cantwell - Reputedly about 500k, possibly less, from Rangers in SPL

Gueye - Around £1 million from Molenbeek, Belgian Pro League (they'd just been relegated from there though)

That's a starting lineup that cost in the region of £4.5 million, maybe a bit more or less depending how accurate reports are. All of them signed (other than Rovers-grown) from Championship or above sides, or top flight foreign leagues, although Brittain and Gueye were part of sides relegated to a lesser tier.

The subs:

Dolan, free from Championship Preston

JRC - academy graduate

Hedges - 200k from Aberdeen in the SPL

Leonard - academy graduate

Forshaw - free from Plymouth in the Championship.

Going off all that, the market we are shopping in is actually Championship or higher/equivalent leagues. Preferably on free transfers or loans, and never more than about 1.5 million. Of the unused subs, only Sanderson came from a lower league, and he has spent most of his career in the Championship and is only a loan. We barely seem to do lower league gems, although I think we should do, but we do look at the foreign top flights now.

Only ones I can think of from recent years (not counting Brittain who had only just been relegated and didn't play there) are Sammie Szmodics, who turned out to be our best in years at about 1.8 million plus add-ons, but who had also just been relegated from the Championship and only played 1 League One game before we bought him, and Connor O'Riordan who has thus far been a pointless signing. There was Pickering too from Crewe, but that was 5 years ago now. Lots of cracking players from League One and Two that go on to shine in the Championship, so I do think we are under-utilising it.

Maybe O'Riordan won't turn out (fwiw, a Cambridge supporter told me he thought COR has talent, but a few major mistakes early on, amid Cambridge plummeting, sealed his fate for that loan...), but I can't fault signing a 20 yo CB with a £500k release clause who already had 79 games of pro experience (in L1/L2/Scottish Champ).

(Whether spending £500k on COR that window meant we chose not to strengthen in another position, and therefore got that much closer to relegation, is a fair counter!)

You can get in trouble if relying on bringing L1 'stars' into the Championship, but there is merit in scouring L1/L2 for young (and affordable...) talent. Dack the obvious hit, Pickering's been good overall, mixed feelings on Rothwell but can't deny he was a good pick, Bell a mixed bag (a PL-er!), Edun a miss, Ennis a bad miss (if somewhat salvaged).

(not counting Szmodics/Brittain given they were in the Championship the season before, but they highlight tracking relegated carcasses!)

The manager wanted Dembele, he was available for next to nothing but he ended up at Oxford United. That really tells us everything about the way this club is still being run !

Eustace paints a frustrated figure in the latest LET article, again reiterating how he needs reinforcements - along with the classic 'nothing imminent' message.

It couldn't be more clear that we're lacking quality in attack, we'd have possibly won the Oxford game had they brought in a decent winger and a striker in the last 20 days of the window...

We're very fortunate that other results went our way over the weekend, we'd be down to about 8th right now had they not.

There are now 14 days left of the window, with 3 games plotted in during that period... they need to stop pissing around now and put their hands in their pockets for the gaffer. He'll be gone at the end of the season if he isn't backed in this window, I feel sure of that - and he isn't short of admirers.

Why would we want Dembele ? Only thought good enough to start 6 games with 6 substitute appearances for the team in 15th place in the table. No goals and one assist.
