January Transfer window

It's been a slightly below average window.  Not the window we needed yet again.  While other clubs have significantly strengthened we've bought in mostly squad players.  What I hate is people praising the 'owners' when they've done nothing.  I just hope Eustace can keep working his magic

I think Kargbo and Dennis walk straight into the first team. Ribeiro provides much needed depth at LB and Sanderson is a useful option at CB / RB.

No idea about Woodley, assume he's been brought in so we can take Gueye off when he's on a yellow and lost his head / it's 70 minutes and he's run out of steam.

Go on then, prove your footballing skills. What's your rating of our transfer activity this window? Do you find it acceptable that we only spent £1 million in total on six signings, whereby three on loan and two on a free? Do you acknowledge the fact that the club now has not spent more than £1 million in a single window during the last six winter transfer windows? Do you know anything about Kargbo that we don't?

I'm trying to be realistic in my judgement but some posters on here seem to be happy to cheer the club on regardless of what is happening.

I’m not employed in football in any form, I’m as clueless as everyone else here but I would ask if you’d consider some of these points I wrote that I think, instead of going to sleep;

1. Any acknowledgment of competition for a small group of players that fit the “model” aka they’re potentially a profit, they’re better than the players you have and they’re leading championship players ready to roll? How many clubs are looking for that?

2. What about finding fees and wages for those specific players from 1. that fit into a structure that suits a budget? A budget that would take a £50m+ (Burnleys annual wage bill for 24/25 btw will be at least 5x total) per season investment to match the 3 relegated teams?

This, in an agent era, when players would rather leave for free to enhance their options. Dolan next?

3. There’s genuine agreement, acknowledgment or whatever you’d call it, that we’re basically on the shelf of a multimillion rupee conglomerate. I’m as depressed as anyone regarding this, however I just can’t get my head round the volume of people wishing and hoping for more Rao cheques. Fuck them, I don’t expect or want big investments from them. I know I’m not the only one. If the recent transfer receipts give us a marginally more competitive budget over a longer period compared to a team losing money, it’s a better investment than relying on billionaires who don’t care and can meddle IMO. We’re surely a better proposition for a new owner if we’re not burning through cash too.

4. I really rate Eustace and I also think our academy is basically pushing us forward, however I think the likes of Waggot and other backroom staff are jobs for the boys level shite. I don’t think they’re capable of organising some sort of conspiracy that others constantly reference - as recently as accusing Travis being told to say “we’re already good enough for top 6” to lower expectation. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone cocked these transfers on deadline day up again, but it would be another example of incompetence, rather than notion that shadows are at force to hold us back.

Sounds like we asked about an option to buy clause, and then they remembered Deadline Day 2023 😱

Yeah, perhaps they thought it best to keep the contract as simple as possible to reduce our chances of cocking it up again.

You didn't even fulfil his request, you just danced around it. He asked, what do you think of the signings?

I’m not going near the latest two until they’re in the shirt on the pitch 😂

It's been an absolutely shit window where they have once again deliberately starved the squad of any real quality.

It has only just fallen short of being a complete disaster. Anyone that doesn't understand this really need to go and have a word with themselves.

That's completely fair! You just shouldn't say you've fulfilled his request when you haven't. You didn't even give your assessment of the other four signings.

I still think it would be early go one way or another with some of the other signings from the summer so I wouldn’t expect anything damming / supporting from me, on players who’ve been here a fortnight.

TDLR; Dion replaces Fadz, Forshaw replaces Baker, Kargo is someone I’ve never even heard of and haven’t watched braga this season. There’s literally no assessment to make.

We will probably sign some more artists in the summer. I wouldn’t banksy on it though and if anyone kicks off in the ground canvassing for better players, they  could get arrested by the local constable.

At least we didn’t sign anyone as bad as John Lowry and from those  painting a picture of positivity, draw your own concussions.

Hope a few of these signings can Turner few heads, and brush off the tackles.

Better than it looked like being 12 hours ago. But that shouldn’t be the yardstick.

Overall, underwhelmed. We’re better off than we were at the start of the window but compared to those around us and considering the money we’ve banked in the last year, it still feels like a missed opportunity.

Pleased with Dennis and the LB sounds like a good buy. Replace Danns for Woodrow and Cissokho for Kargbo and I’d have felt more positively.

Why does it say on the website Dennis is still subject to approval from the relevant football authorities? Woodrows doesn't.....presumably something to do with the salary structure or the fact it was last, last minute? There's still a chance we can fuck it up right?

On the face of it an OK window. At 27 this is a career defining move for Dennis. Question marks over his fitness of course, if we'd signed him at the start of the window he'd probably be fully fit by now too 🙄

Woodrow I'm not sure on at all tbh, Luton fans aren't very complimentary at all. Still he may read those comments and think you know what I'll show the fuckers.

Forshaw seemed a poor signing and still does, haven't even seen a glimmer to suggest he can help us.

Sanderson is an extra body in, looked OK on his debut I suppose.

Kargbo I'm intrigued to see play, potentially an exciting signing, guessing he's pretty much match fit too so can get involved pretty quickly.

Ribeiro was a tidy player at Forest and gives us an option to push Beck forward too, quite happy with him.

This window is very bad news for teenagers sitting on the bench.

Difficult to make any other judgement but I hope Kargbo and Dennis fitness levels are where they need to be and the increased competition for places works effectively.

JE has generally been very good deploying subs. That aspect of his decision making has just got more challenging.

The Wolves line up is going to be interesting...

I am very happy with Dennis signing. He is quality player during his time at Forest and Watford

I am looking forward to seeing this left back Riberio and winger Kargbo, probably in the Fa Cup game against Wolves.

The thing that strikes me is the lack of long term investment.

We have signed one player with a contract beyond this season and that is only until 2027.

Disticnt lack of contract renewals too. Half the team is out of contract in the summer.

My optimistic brain wants to believe Venkys might be looking to sell?

My practical brain believes they simply won’t invest. We invested what, £900k this window?

Overall a disappointing window and the bulk of activity done 3/4 weeks too late. We have missed a golden opportunity with the league as it is this year, teams around us have strengthened more than we have.

5/10.

An actual January window transfer deadline day signing, let alone two. They can operate a fax machine finally!

On first glance, I’d say…

Sanderson - is a good signing to cover as 4th cb with Carter due back,

Forshaw - Defo not good enough to replace Baker who was deemed 1st choice, after Sonny and Trav. The only positive is Buckley having stepped up.

Kargbo - Has been scouted heavily and pursued by the club. Seems to play off the left, is quick and direct. But an unknown quantity.

Ribeiro - Brought in as cover to the end of the season. Good pedigree and experience. Time will tell but looks perfectly acceptable.

Woodrow - *Reaches for tin hat. I always liked him at Barnsley, best played as a second / deeper striker as he’s technical and can finish. I can see him potentially rotating with Cantwell and IF JE can get a tune out of him he’ll be far more of a threat behind Gueye. That said,  I can see why some are not entirely happy with him. I don’t think the style of play at Luton is suited to him.

Dennis - I remember him in the PL for Watford popping up with goals but I can’t remember if he’s quick or not. Reliably informed he is, and having signed for Forest for £20m and with reported £70k a week wages, this is a coup. We need to get him up to speed and with a point to prove!!

If all fit, and firing I’d play:

                   Pears

Brittain.  Hyam.   Batth.   Beck

            Travis.   Sonny

Dennis.     Cantwell.    Kargbo

                   Gueye

Subs - Toth, JRC, Ribeiro, Carter, Buckley, Dolan, Weimann, Woodrow, Ohashi

Sanderson, Siggy and Hedges don’t even make that bench but could easily be rotated in based on form, injuries and opinion.

On the face of it, we do look stronger. Shame we’ve dropped so many points in Jan, but time to look forward, no excuses. We’ve got a cracking chance to get in the playoffs!
