January Transfer window

Forgot Weimann!

Eustace asked for bodies, he got bodies. Remains to be seen how much breath there is in them.

Technically he asked for 3 players that would come in and raise the standards - players that the rest of the squad would appreciate as being quality additions.

Sanderson 4/10 - decent backup but it's a loan spot wasted in my opinion. Should've signed a center-back on a permanent deal.

Forshaw 0/10 - not even good enough as a backup. A downgrade to Baker.

Kargbo 5/10 - a gamble since he's unproven at this level. Could be good, could be bad.

Ribeiro 4/10 - again, decent backup like Sanderson. Not likely to get ahead of Beck in the pecking order, though.

Dennis 7/10 - good signing. Will need a couple of matches to gain match fitness but possess much-needed pace that has been lacking for some time in this team.

Woodrow 3/10 - questionable signing. Was out of favour in Luton. Not convinced at all.

Overall rating: 4/10 - Only Dennis can be seen as a good signing this window as he will improve starting XI. Ribeiro, Sanderson and Woodrow are, at best, decent backups. Kargbo is a real gamble, can't imagine the recruitment team are fully convinced on this one but time will tell. Forshaw is just a horrible one.

I think context added too.

Deals done far far too late in the window and we lost out on a lot of points due to this.

Dennis will potentially be a good addition for the next three months - but all depends on his fitness levels.

Other than that, we have spent virtually nothing, after previously generating significant amounts in transfer fees whilst reducing costs. There was no impediment to spend other than the owners' decision.

For those reasons, it was a very poor transfer window in which we fell further behind our current main rivals, whilst also growing the proportion of our squad that will not be contracted to the club for next season and not even investing in potential, to generate transfer fees in future.

It all seems devoid of any strategy and like a club treading water, at best. I can't feel particularly positive about this transfer window, nor the ones ahead, for as long as Venkys' curse is hanging over us.

I agree with this. The club has no long term strategy, they are just trying to put out fires window to window. Loan signings and 1 year deals will come back to haunt us this summer or next. We needed 8-10 signings last summer to have a squad to be competive for the WHOLE season so we don't panic in January but thats never gonna happen realistically.

I don't expect to compete with the relegated clubs, just want to see some sort of plan. With all the players potentially leaving for free, where is the next transfer fee coming from? Carter?

I don't blame the players leaving for free, much more lucrative for them and the clubs will cash in with loan fees or sales if they don't hit the mark, easy money. I think FIFA and UEFA need to address the bosman rule now as it's crippling smaller clubs losing their assets for free and bumping up the wages of players. I don't think a club like us can keep a player for more than 2 years without risking them walking for free.

Anyway, let's see if Dennis, Woodrow & Riberio can get fit and up to speed quickly as none of them have really played this season.

IMO, a crock of shite.

Where or where is the addition, let alone additions, who is going to make a difference?  Sure as hell, Armstrong will at WBA.

Dennis who many are purring over hasn't played for an age and is probably 4 to 6 weeks off peak fitness - even then, will he really make a difference?

Kargbo who has hardly been ripping it up in Serie C and rated so highly we give him a 2.5 year deal!  It's a nonsense.

The rest are the unwanted, snatched from the scrap heap.

We will fall well short.

Good luck to those soon to post 'let's see how they perform first' - get a sense of reality and stop living on feckin fantasy island.

Agree in the main however a fully fit Dennis could easily be the difference

Somewhat agree with this tbh... There is no signing on face value that makes the first 11 immediately better. The squad is stronger but everything rests on Kargbo & Dennis to hit the ground running. Proof is in the pudding with those and therefore I don't see how anyone can say this has been a good window.

Summary for me

good deadline day but poor window overall

we left it too late too many weeks/games gone within the period with such a threadbare squad

dennis I touted (more in hope) a month ago didn’t think would be realistic could easily be a game changer but he would have needed the 3/4 weeks to get up to speed. Training and playing matches are totally different

ribiero - like the signing personally

Woodrow - thrown by this one tbh unless sigurdsson is gone or Leonard’s back injury is season ending - he can play deeper though

Kargbo - as Iv stated before will judge him when seen

Overall though I’m very concerned about the lack of plan/structure re windows/investment. Questions need asked of those above particularly regarding all the short term deals our players contracts running down and the potential of high squad turnover come the summer

we were told venkys have the money we were told were clear of ffp we were told venkys still are interested but yet all short term deals/loans/frees suggest otherwise

time will tell one thing im 100% sure on is Eustace will be gone come the summer unless we get top 6 so let’s give it a rattle

Am I happy with transfers?
So so, but it matters more that Eustace is happy. He has shown he can work wonders with players so let’s see how they all pan out in a few weeks time

I’m disappointed though, to put it mildly, that once again our shitty owners have missed a great opportunity to cement their place in the playoffs. We’re fighting for 2 playoff spots (5th &6th) because we have dropped too many points as we didn’t sign players at the beginning of the window. That has meant we are too far adrift of the top 4 places.
With the money previously brought in and being in a great position with FFP, any half competent owners could have matched the spending of the top four and given us an opportunity of an automatic promotion.
We still have the opportunity to get promoted so that gives us hope. Unfortunately WBA and Boro have made some strong signings so we can’t really afford to have another bad run of defeats.

The signings offer hope of promotion nothing more.

Especially on the striking front. We should have gone all out as soon as we knew Ohashi had a medium term injury. That left us with Gueye who was slowly building up to playing 90 minutes, Weimann who is playing from memory and Leonard who seems never far away from a trip to the treatment table.

Will Ribiero be Beck backup or will we push Beck to LW?

Could be both. If we're leading it could make sense to play them both at the same time. Alan Nixon said Beck has been carrying an injury and that's why we changed course this window.

Dennis is a better player than Armstrong. Kargbo destroyed Serie C, he's been ok in Serie B.

In relation to boro West Brom signings they can now have no excuses

boro in particular but I said a couple of days back they went too top heavy they concede too many (of late anyway) that won’t do it I don’t think

west brom - albeit a loan Armstrong is great business at this level and if he hits the ground running I can see them being the team that pushes away in 5th

To be honest we could go back to one of your posts on September 1st which would have said much the same, relegation yada yada, but we currently sit in 5th. The ability for supporters to predict how players turn out is very poor. We were all excited by Sigurdsson and then he was terrible. Underwhelmed by Baath but hes been fantastic.

None of us really know how they will pan out as signings. Waiting and seeing is the only thing we can do. We'll have a better view end of Feb once we have seen them play.

The one thing that that the signings have delivered on is pace, experience and players who, albeit not currently, know where the back of the net is.

I feel that Eustace will be pretty content with what he has to work with. However, let’s hope that Tronstad gets back quicker than expected as it will tighten up our defensive situation, which is badly needed.
btw contrary to most people’s view on here, I think Woodrow playing as a no. 10 could be a master stroke. He was brilliant at Barnsley playing there and like many players who fare poorly when played in a football style not suited to their game, he could shine again playing under Eustace.

Thankfully WBA have a crap manager.

So to summarise one punt and four on short term deals who will be gone in the summer and need replacing again and so the roundabout carries on and it's not a magic one. The surprising event was that they actually managed to get two loan deals through in the last hour before eleven.
