Tin hat on - that's a first team squad of 24 players (not included Gilsenan as I would view him more as a U21 player). That's near the maximum for a Championship team I think? Indeed the maximum squad size for the Championship is 25 players + as many non-loaned Under-21 players as you like (only Leonard could come under that I think from the above diagram). So we are only two under the limit, and it would have been one before Baker left.

From  https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/what-are-the-efl-squad-rules-for-202425-loanee-limits-home-grown-players-and-how-many-subs-are-allowed :

Championship clubs can have squads of up to 25 players, of which a minimum of 8 need to be home grown [see below]. you're allowed an unlimited amount of under-21s on permanent contracts without registering them, but you would need to register any loanees among your 25 players, even if they're under-21s.

For home grown : a player to be considered home grown by the EFL, they don't necessarily need to be British (they can be any nationality) or to have been trained by that specific club. All that is required to qualify as home grown is to have been registered with any club affiliated to the FA or the FA of Wales for at least three seasons or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday (or the end of the season they turn 21). We can't see anything to say loanees are excluded from counting as home grown players."

I have to admit, it wasn't until that diagram came about (thanks to the poster who did that - looks clean actually) that I realised the 'balance' of the squad, ie two first teamers to every position

It shows just how perilous teams sit if a few injuries hit. And the importance of a good youth system to maximise total amount of available players

The rumours of offloading McFadzean make sense if we are linked with better defenders on loan. It says to me that Rovers can't afford a 4th choice "out and out" centre back this year and instead need a defender who can play wide if required, like Carter

With Garrett coming back I would imagine that we'd only move for Morton if we can't get in a striker / wide player, like we desperately need

Although Wharton is almost certainly out for the season, so that's one more space for a loan this season  which is perhaps why Kitching makes sense

Yeah maybe thinking about it we didnt even bother registering him? If so that would free up a squad place.

Ah we didnt register him....

Our favourite twitter itk is on it again.

Leonard to a Championship side on loan would be very stupid, even if we sign another striker. Not only does it reduce our depth in a position we are light, but it would likely go the way of Buckley to Sheff W - at best. Truthfully he'd probably play a lot less than that. If he does go out on loan (after we sign someone else) it has to be League One for regular football. Anywhere else would be a waste of time.

Unless the Championship club are buying of course, in which case you'd have to consider fair offers.

I feel certain that we're gonna end up with either Andre Gray or Daniel Jebbison - though the latter is probably the least likely of the two due to Bournemouth's injury problems.

With our budget and Eustace wanting experience then I'd say Gray is one of the best/most realistic signings. His wages won't be too extreme and despite being 33, still knows where the net in - It'll pee our neighbours off as well so I say bring him in.

A quick direct winger from aboard would be nice on a permanent.

I want to trust the recruitment team, because overall the summer window was positive. However, the last several January windows have left a bitter taste in the mouth and I am reluctant to believe this window will be any different.

Because it’s the same - board need fans on board so each summer they come with a new plan a new narrative and a better window. We as fans buy into the manager gets a tune out of the team………then when we need it most in Jan there’s silence! We get same old spiel we need bodies out / Jan window difficult to operate in / agents hard to deal with / no value in the market / etc

love to be wrong this time round as I genuinely believe this championship isn’t as strong as before so 6th could be a target if we get 3/4 decent players in but the ambition needs to be shown

Surely after banking £40m+ in transfer fees we're above bringing in 33 year old wingers on their last legs?

Right? Dying a slow death this club (or a quick one if they continue to refuse to put money in).

Going off the last windows, I don't think we are, so let's be realistic now.

Morton was and is a good player

You are right - vastly experienced people are giving him game time, whilst he also seems to be present in top-half finishing Championship teams

He will give us more than Buckley. And if he is matured since he was here then I am expecting him to be a good loan, should it materialise

He doesn't get any game time whatsoever at Liverpool according to Wikipedia and rightly so he's rubbish.

@TommyRovers you hath been summoned!

I'd rather rely on unleaded's info.

Earth calling "International Rescue. Come in please."

There was another chap as well who was always extremely positive and according to him everything was always hunky dory behind the scenes and everyone we signed was always a good signing in his eyes. Can't remember his username.

Whereas unleaded used to tell us what was really going on and invariably painted a picture of complete chaos behind the scenes. Lol.

Ahhhhh come on

Tyler Morton is not a rubbish player. He was a young lad when he was at us but he was clearly gifted.

He played 3 times for Liverpool - against West Ham, Southampton and Brighton. They won all 3 games.

The season before that he played practically every minute for a very good Hull City side. The year before that, he played a lot of football for what was a good Rovers side

We need to have a bit of reflection here. There's no point just throwing the term "rubbish" around. At the end of the day, he is going to struggle to break into a Liverpool side that is where it is. There's no point judging his game time there. But in the 2 seasons he has played Championship football - as a teenager - he has been an ever present midfielder for a top 10 side

For me, that is a sign of a good player

The fact he seems to be free from injury is another positive too. 40+ games in the Championship, in midfield, is a sign of very, very good fitness levels

In any case, it may just be a rumour. But I'd be delighted with swapping out Baker for Morton. Not saying I didn't like Baker - I did - but Morton is a better option imo.

It's a game of opinions, a lot of managers here seemingly rated Jason Lowe and Corry Evans as well.

When did he make those appearances for Liverpool? In the EFL  Cup?

Don't know if we have any interest or not, but would love us to try for Ricky Jade Jones . Contract up in the summer so shouldn't cost a fortune, can play wide attacker or in the middle and , just as important is absolutely RAPID.

Rather him than Poku tbh

Cardiff had a bid rejected, not sure how much for though

Morton is an upgrade on Buckley (and Baker). If there are any legs to it then it needs to be done asap given our current lack of depth in CM

I'm still not fully over him rolling around after the eye poke at Sheffield United though.

Also doesn't address our biggest need of 'sticking the ball in the net'
