How bad would it be then if you were first choice and I was backup ?

Would that still count as depth?

Yep, still depth. Just complete shite (and I recommend you go ahead of me).

What about you and I? I'm incredibly injury prone and would probably spend at least 80% of the season injured, and the rest being shit at that level. Is that still depth?

Yep. A body is a body 😅

I suppose by this logic, the club always has great depth. We have plenty of U21s, U18s and U16s we could field, who are better than either of us...

And then clearly an army of fans ready to get out there after that.

Having Beck and Pickering is good depth and good quality.

Having Beck and Me is good depth but less quality.

Having Beck is having good quality but no depth.

Having Pickering is ok but no depth.

Having me is a fucking disaster (mainly because I’m right footed and shit anyway).

Sorry---having you doesn't add any depth at all!

Isn't that the same thing?

Not In my book. To me adding quality means improving the quality of the starting eleven, adding depth means bringing in people as back up in case of injury or suspension.

I don't think many people would argue that if we were really serious about making a promotion push we need a striker who can find the back of the net, a pacy winger and although Batth has done very well, a centre half who all walk straight into the team.

Unfortunately all we usually get is a bit of tinkering round edges in terms of padding out the squad a bit because it's cheaper.

Especially in January.

I don’ think we disagree here do we? depth is about quality not mere numbers.

As someone above alluded to, we will always have a starting eleven and we’ll always have substitutes available in numbers but not, sadly, in depth.

Anyway I’m sick of tidying up Riggers messes while he buggers off!

I think we lack depth in virtually every position on the pitch.

To clarify, I meant depth in quality. Drafting an U18 in cos Hyam and Baath are injured is not depth.  If one or both of those two get injured we’re a bit fooked at present.

A squad having depth is a reference to  quality i.e. strength in depth. It’s not a reference to quantity. It’s a common reference in football discussion. I’m surprised you misunderstood.

I didn't misunderstand, I read what was posted. If what was posted, was not what the poster was trying to say, I cannot help that.

Like I said, you misunderstood the meaning. Not everything is literal, even if it does allow for pedantry. If a squad lacks ‘depth’ it means that beyond the first XI the squad is a bit shit. Always has done, always will do. I cannot help that you don’t know that.

Dont think so except striker and centre back. Good backups at GK (Hoth), lb (beck or pickering), rb (JRC) cm (Buckley, Baker), wing (ACB, Sigurdsson).

Obviously you can always do better, but compared to most seasons we're in a pretty good place

GK - Pears is average and he’s the best we’ve got. At most Championship clubs he’d be backup.

CB - With Carter injured we’re another injury away from real trouble.

We play with 2 DMs so there’s no like for like swap in there.

We have no cover at RB. JRC is an accident waiting to happen and Duru is unproven.

LB is an area where we don’t need reinforcements.

LW is poor - Hedges and Siggy are just not good enough.

AM - Cantwell and Dolan are good options.

RW - Dolan is inconsistent and ACD unproven.

Striker options are average at best.

The first XI is competitive, the replacements either unproven or proven inadequate.

I think the quality of the manager is papering over a lot of cracks in the squad.

What's the strength in depth up front?

Fair point and I delete it after your comment/reply. I like Ohashi and what he brings. Leonard I rate and he did well in his first season last season for me. Gueye signing hasn't work out
