If we could get him fit he's proven he can lead the line at this level. snapped his achilles when at sunderland and has never been the same player since,no idea why southampton bought him 1 Quote

riverholmes Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Watching Liverpool’s left back situation with some concern re. Beck. They seem to have played Gomez in the Carabao Cup, with Endo, normally a midfielder, at CB. Tsimikas came off the bench. Robertson meanwhile has been indifferent lately. It seems possible they’ll bring in a new signing at left back in Jan, but also possible they’ll consider recalls. As well as Beck, I think they have another left back, Scanlon, who’s less experienced. Not much Rovers can do, but will need a replacement if he does go back. Quote
Ricky Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I came on to suggest Bamford as an out of form option but I’ve read the last posts and given myself a slap. 9 Quote

Will go on to great things I imagine. We should be desperate to keep him for what we hope is our promotion drive. 1 Quote
RevidgeBlue Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Unless he's being very crafty and keeping his cards close to his chest, it doesn't sound from the latest LT article as though Eustace has the first idea what is going on re: any potential January business or even if there'll be any business at all. Pretty poor if that's the case and especially bearing in mind how well the manager has done to date, we should have specified targets in mind and be going all out to get them, instead it's probably a case of "See if you can find me a no.9 and a left winger for a couple of sweet wrappers and a half eaten Mars Bar." 1 Quote
47er Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I just read the LT article and I agree it doesn't sound promising. He's clearly bemoaning the loss of John Park and annoyed there's been no replacement and does't seem to know what's going on. Only at Ewood you'd think. 2 Quote

They were willing to let Beck go for £3-4m (I forget which without looking up the article) in the summer to Celtic. I don't think they're anywhere near as high on him as we are. 1 Quote
philipl Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Nobody seems to have clocked that a Hedges contract renewal creates a saleable asset. He might not be good enough for us but he's better than 50% of equivalent players in the Championship. If we sign the two players Swag will now be vilified for if we don't get, I expect Dolan will be sold at the end of the window. 1 Quote

Though I think it’s always prudent not to read too much into articles which quote interviews as the way written form is constructed, including the words used to contextualise quotes can often be read 10x different ways. FYI - I read it as - the club know what they need, quality over quantity to improve a couple of key positions, rabbits outta the hat stuff (think Cantwell) it’s upto them whether they do loans, or buy and that will come down to budget. Then it looks like JE was asked about Park, his job role and replacement, to which he’s answered honestly. When you put ot all together into a few hundred words, it sounds anxious.. I would like to watch the full interview. Edited December 20, 2024 by Paul Mani 3 Quote

I can’t imagine fans of many other teams have left a game against us saying “blimey that Hedges looks like a real player, we would do with him”. No idea what sort of wages he’s on but I wouldn’t be increasing them much if offering a new contract. 4 Quote

We only paid £200k for him (at which price I still think we had our pants pulled down) Must be worth even less now. Are you saying we should give him a new contract so if necessary we can sell him for about £100k ? Edited December 20, 2024 by RevidgeBlue Quote

He definitely isnt better than 50% of equivalent players, he rarely ever contributes going forward, has 7 goals in 4 seasons and is less effective for us in comparison to a left back. How is he a sellable asset? He will be 30 next summer, has had 2 bad (the same) injuries and as mentioned seldom offers an attacking threat. How much do you think he is worth? 3 Quote
KentExile Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) So long as Hedges basic wage isn't too high, I have no issue with renewing his contract and having him as a squad player. Beck will not be here next season (unless Rovers manage promotion in which case we may be able to have him back on loan), which already leaves us needing to find someone to play on the left side (at either left wing or left back, I personally like Pickering at left back and Beck further forwards), so re-signing Hedges allows us to theoretically concentrate our search on someone who will go into the first 11. For all the talk of injury issues, he has played 98 first team games for Rovers in under 3 years since he signed (albeit boosted by a near ever present season in JDTs first year). But he has also been near ever present this year so far too. His injury issues were confined to last season) As a squad player, Hedges is useful, he is versatile, does not shirk defensive duties, puts in a shift, and is capable of temporarily plugging a gap in the side in case of injury/suspension/late in the game when we are trying to keep things tight. roversfan99 Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 The biggest compliment that anyone seems to be able to give him is that he is useful, tries hard and gives decent cover. So why do we need to offer him an extended contract when his current one with the extension should we choose to activate it already keeps him until he is 31? 3 Quote

If it was me offering the extension, it would be an attempt to reduce his basic salary, but bump his performance related clauses for appearances/goals/assists etc, to try to coax more consistency from him in regard to goal contributions whilst also negating any potential fall off in availability due to age/future injuries Edited December 20, 2024 by KentExile 2 Quote

Hedges is a good squad player and someone who Eustace trusted. He has been every presence this season. We can't offer a 2 year contract extension as a squad player. So what is your problem with him? JDT and Eustace clearly always rated him. Quote
