Hedges (leaving aside his PNE aberration) that may be at the front of the minds of his detractors) has, when fit  proved to be reliable and trusted by Mowbray JDT and Eustace. He’s versatile and adaptable and has been used at RB LB RWB LWB & LW over his time here.
Honest reliable journeyman with decent touch, game management and acceptable goal involvement is how I’d describe him.
A new deal is unlikely to break the bank so a view to extend & keep him should not be objectionable.

Reliable not.  Trusted yes but don't know why . His game involvement is minimal at best

Which brings me to the manager aspect of it. Eustace along with others see value in him

whether that’s on the stat sheets or gps behind the scenes in the changing room or future role as coach

fans just look at ‘stats’ nowadays and never the bigger picture

Evans played in a truly atrocious rovers team I think the midfield options were something like Williamson etuhu Lowe etc along with the revolving door of managers in our worst time

But this hedges debate is silly for me like my main issue or response is ‘so what if he’s offered a new contract’ what’s the drawback for it. Seems it’s just fans jumping on him because they don’t like him which they are entitled to their opinion but it seems petty given it’s not really a big issue he’s not the best player we have but far from the worst

And I do think there’s something to be said for a manager selection given JDT for our champ time has been our most successful in terms of getting close to playoffs and now currently Eustace who’s overseeing our best championship run in years all in which hedges is playing a significant role minutes wise

As a ‘traditional winger’ fans are correct he should have more goals and assists ( I think his chance creation is high enough though so that’s on the forwards) but how we play he’s used more defensively he provides balance which allows freedom for others. It might not be what fans want but it’s what Eustace wants and gets from him

You ask whats the main drawback. We are currently in a position where we can decidr over 6 montbs whether to then keep him for another 12 months at the same wage, until he is 31. A new deal with presumably a wage increase means we keep him until 32 with no get out so ties up crucial resources on a player who just isnt very good.

You keep saying people are obsessed with stats. And yes that is a part of it in that his goal return for an attacking player is woeful. You also mention chances created as if hes put loads on a plate for strikers who have missed them, which isnt the case. He also isnt quick and he doesnt take players on.

You also speculate on a few things. You keep referring to him being great off the pitch, you dont know either way. Im sure hes a solid pro but beyond that its just guesswork. And im sure his GPS does show he run around a lot but is that worthy of a new deal.

It was stated in this weeks LT that Hedges was a popular figure in the dressing room.

You keep saying he isn’t good whilst ignoring why he gets picked. You just need to accept that the manager values him for reasons you can’t see.

Hedges is a steady eddie, but no kid wants to be him on the school yard and I can't imagine he's a shirt seller.

Provided he's not on big money he's happy enough to put in a 6/10 across multiple positions and every squad needs a player like him

Im sure he is, they all seem to get on from the outside.

We are having a discussion on what we actually see, not just dismissing our own opinions based on intangibles. Being a good guy in the dressing room, being trusted, working hard, all important but not enough on its own.

There is also the business side of it which wont be a consideration even if Eustace has specifically said to give Hedges a new deal. At the moment, I think his deal expiring in the summer but with a years option in our favour which takes him to 31 is a nice balance. I dont think committing further makes sense beyond how Eustace feels.

Eustace is the manager. It’s not about how he ‘feels’ it’s about what Hedges brings to the team. That’s the bit you are consistently missing.

I’ll find a Hedges thread for you so we don’t derail this any further.

I am not missing it, I just happen to have a different opinion. I know he works hard, keeps the shape and presumably is a decent pro and fits into the dressing room. I personally dont see that as enough.

Ive also mentioned before, but during his time here we have struggled with wide men. This season, Weimann offers much more but has had injury issues, Sigurdsson is an invisible man, Cozier Dubbery has been injured, Dolan has been needed centrally and we failed to sign another wide man as planned, so I dont see Hedges constantly playing as automatically meaning that he must be seen as a key player.

I also think from a business perspective it makes no sense to commit to a new deal now. And we are assuming that Eustace is pushing for it.

It is not as if the transfer window is open nor is there anything other to discuss, so a potential new deal is the only thing really.

I dont think the fact that Eustace may like him and keeps selecting him invalidates the opinions of those who dont agree.

You missed defensive discipline.

And it clearly is enough for a manager whose first objective is to keep a clean sheet. That’s the bit you consistently ignore.

I dont miss the defensive side, but again I personally feel you have to still offer more going forward. Beck is a left back and when he plays there he offers more.

Hedges does offer a threat and has played key part in wins at Hull as someone pointed.

1 good game 7 average games 2 shite games out of 10 .. that’s Hedges , bang average championship player  shouldn’t be near a first team regular for any team with ambitions of promotion

Lucky for him he's at the one club that will never have any intention of getting promoted.

And like Bennett before him, these types of player can be picked up quite easily.

I agree that squads need this type of player but under no circumstances should they be a priority in contract talks.

I am not sure if it is that Hedges is seen as "a priority" for contract talks.  It is likely just that his is just a contract that can be agreed.  There is after all, no rule that says clubs cannot talk to numerous players at once

If we are to assume that Rovers have a pay scale, with a maximum basic wage that can be offered to any given player (probably £15K-£20K/week max). the other players who will soon be out of contract soon (Travis, Tronstad, Dolan, Hyam) will quite possibly want wages that would stretch or break that  pay scale, as they will be very well aware that they could get at least that amount elsewhere.

I have seen numerous posters state that "x player should not be paid £15K/week+", which is fine, but if that is the case, and if that is where Rovers draw the line in the sand with regards contract offers, then we cannot be surprised if negotiations reach an impasse, and the players decide to move on to a club which has a higher maximum wage threshold.

Never see a more obvious transfer in Mcburnie to the Dingles.

I think he would be perfect striker for us tbh. Experience, knowledge. Knowhow at this level, holds the ball up, score goals

Mcburnie would be a good addition. Seems to have the right character too.

Alan Nixon saying Rovers want bring striker Oli McBurnie from Las Palmas. Dingles also interest.

Is he out of contract soon?

Would be a good addition. Good target man who scores goals. Not had one of those since Danny Graham left.
