January Transfer window

The window going swimmingly well so far for slippery and shadow. Another wage/contribution off the books today, over a quarter of the way through the window and no money spent, still counting the money from last weekend's derby day cash bonanza.

It's only the players, manager and fans that want us to spend, strengthen, get better, improve, maintain our top 6 push. This is not of any concern whatsoever to the owners or 'board'.

Yeah we don't have them because none of their transfer fees was reinvested.

That's how idiotic our owners are

We had Szmodic because on that occasion they allowed us to spend more than £1 million on a transfer fee

Last 2 seasons have we gone above £1 million on a player?

That wasn't the point under debate.

The proposition I was replying to was that savvy owners (i.e. not Venky's) wouldn't have to fund losses.

They would for quite a while imo.

Whilst I will miss Bakers experience around the squad I have seen enough to know he is a bang average midfielder who can easily be replaced. The key question is will they replace him, answer is probably not.

No surprise our form has gone to shit since Travis got injured, we desperately need a centre mid willing to get forward and support attacks like he does. Baker just spent all game stood next to Tronstad making 6 yard passes.

Such a fragile squad now. The club should never have been in a position where the January transfer window - when it’s always difficult to bring in quality players,  was, in Eustaces’ words “vital”.  It’s even more vital now.

This just reflects so badly on everyone outside the players and manager.

Its so short sighted.

The only real way to reduce losses substantially is through player trading.

We are now left with no real assets. With Szmodics, we paid was it £2m and sold for £9m. You can even get away with a dud or two on top of that and youve still made a profit on trading.

If you spend money, its not just a case of increasing losses, especially as its amortized over the course of his contract. You are investing in potential assets to actually make money out of transfers.

I can't speak for WATR, I don't think I could bring myself to sit in the same room as Waggott after he tried to flog off part of Brockhall.

Long term unless the owners are prepared to fund the Club properly and employ proper people to run it - which has never happened simultaneously to date - more recently we only ever seem to have had Mowbray going through the motions and wasting the opportunity or JDT and Eustace being the right fit but being starved of funding - the only option would appear to be to try and actively attract potential investors.

Without wishing to be rude what can the Trust actually do? Issue a vote of no confidence in the owners and management?  That'll have them shaking in their boots.

No worries. It's not rude at all.

I think it is probably time for a change in the "critical friend's" emphasis.

Less tea, cakes and ices and more rigorous challenge....probably a time for public challenge too.

Only my opinion, but I think the Trust must guard against bolstering the illusion, purveyed by Waggott et al. that the club are making an honest attempt at progression/promotion etc.

12 years and counting. Not a single top 6 finish.

A previous poster illustrated the more recent,,disturbing pattern of transfer window cock up/sabotage.

I couldn't agree more with that analysis.

I read a few pages on Stokes forum earlier about his recall, and a few posters stated unless he plays further forward, he just drifts out of the game and becomes anonymous when played in that deeper role.

Every club in the championship loses money .

Venkys don't need to be sending over £20 million to cover losses at all.We have a bottom 3 wage budget  and we never spend on transfers.

Yeah a savvy owner like say the Brentford owner used the transfer market to cover losses and move the club forward

A savvy owner wouldn't bank 40+ million in sales and spend sweet fuck all.

The point I'm making we don't have another Armstrong to sell , another Szmodic to sell is because our owners don't reinvest transfer money

My biggest memory of him will be missing that header against Burnley last weekend.  For that reason alone I'm not sorry to see him go. He needs to be replaced though - surely it can't beyond even this useless management to find another average Championship plodder?

Meanwhile in the real world Middlesbrough have accepted bids of £5m from Luton and (ironically) WBA for Issiah Jones.

And we are doing.......what?

Your point is well noted

but I’d love to see the reaction in here if we offered 5million for jones

would be mayhem

but yes your overall point still stands those competing with us ie West Brom forming out money to sustain a playoff charge

Again don't disagree - we've been a selling club and not the trading club we need to be obviously - but that wasn't the point I was making.

At best there would still be quite a turn round period when not insubstantial losses would be incurred and need to be covered imo.

Its what owners with a bit of gumption would have done last season.  Technically speaking Venkys could still do that now.  But they wont

Exactly.

Given our FFP situation and our position in the league, they could spend £10/£20/£30 million now,, get promoted and start recovering their losses. Then maybe settle for yoyoing and have no losses to cover

The great irony that comes with our owners' insatiable appetite for selling off assets and using the proceeds to pay their bills is that they have the opportunity to repeat the trick on a regular basis moving forwards yet don't.

If they were so keen to rake in cash, for the club to 'fund itself', for more of the Armstrongs, Whartons and Szmodics to pay their bills for them, then you'd think after a decade of this that the penny might have dropped that you have to put some cash back in to get some more assets onto the books and repeat the process in a year or two's time.

Yet with this mob they aren't even good at selling, because the well is very soon going to run dry and so they will be soon back to having to find £10 million+ (not £20 million a year as they've managed to hoodwink many into believing is necessary) from their own resources.

Venkys.....not very good at much are they?

I mean I can at least respect some of that, it won’t fix everything but a good brew is always welcome.

Bet it’s cheap teabags these days though

If it was that simple to guarantee promotion every club in the division would spend another £10 or £20 million.

Jones is another with little end product

Less goal involvements than Dolan in the 5 years he has been in the championship (from slightly more minutes than Dolan too), and none at all this season

Jones stats

Dolan stats

He has pace, which is useful, but that's about it

Meh 134 appearances for boro

12 goals / 17 assists

for a wing forward attacking winger

think there’s better value out there for the 5million

Listen if we got him I wouldn’t turn my nose up at all I’m more being judgy on the price
