Car. Barely I've been to work all week on a night shift. Once through wintry weather. I travelled home this morning through heavy rain and wind. Called in for few shopping items this morning at Whitebrik Shopping estate. Not once did I think of not attending today

Also food will have been ordered for hospitality and the concourses, stewards and other staff will have to be paid and ticket money refunded to lots of Rovers and Portsmouth fans who won't be able to make a night game. It's turned into an expensive day for Rovers and although there are no guarantees surely covering the pitch would have given the game going ahead a better chance.

Will the club not take out insurance for this ?

If they didn’t cover the pitch, and a pitch covering would have allowed the game to go ahead, then serious questions need to be asked about the people in charge of running the club. 
 

Feel sorry for the Pompey fans who would have been half way to Ewood, and the Rovers favs travelling from distance.

I remember going to Rovers v Charlton back in the 1960’s.  It was a day just like this. The river at the back of the Riverside was a raging torrent. They kicked off at 3-00 but it wasn’t long before pools of standing water started to appear and passing the ball became a lottery. 

There was a really funny moment. Rovers were attacking the Darwen End and Mike Ferguson put in a great cross around the penalty spot. Alan Gilliver was playing up front and as he took an almighty swipe at the ball,  a gust of wind came up a blew the ball away like a toy yacht. He missed the ball completely, did a pirouette, and fell into a large puddle.  Everybody was laughing, even the ref.

Anyway Charlton scored just before half time to make it 0-1 but the ref called it off at half time. I used to have the programme. It was pretty bedraggled and rain damaged and it was in my inside pocket !

I think the problem is the water table of the pitch being so high, given Ewood Park’s location, (ie in a valley, next to a river).

Agreed re the Pompey fans, but I did post last night I wouldn’t have been chancing it.

Heaven rain all night and all day so far in Preston. It will be interesting to see if the game still goes ahead at Dumpdale, but of course it isn’t situated in a plug hole like Ewood.

Mourinho said once there was a microclimate at Ewood. Perhaps he was right. One of only 3 matches across the top 4 divisions postponed at present

I remember a game against Fulham in the mid 80s that was also a farce.

It would never have been completed today.

Im pretty sure we won 1 - 0 .

We’re in a valley, next to a river. Covers or otherwise don’t solve the problem of an excess of water needing somewhere to drain, a full river doesn’t provide this. 

I will always call out the owners and the current executives at the club, whose incompetence has been exposed and proven, many, many times. Whilst annoying, I am prepared to give the Groundsman and staff the benefit of the doubt on this one, the fact that Notlob and Knob End have got their matches on doesn’t negate the location specific drainage issues at Ewood and I am sure that the last thing the club, with the never ending cash flow issues, needed was a postponement.

I don't doubt pitch would have been in a bad state if game been on, not helped by additional games played at Ewood on top of Championship games. However, there's a lot of questions as to why it takes an 11am pitch inspection when most of the Pompey fans are well into there 500 miles return journey. We all have a right to see what was done or not done when most of us knew to postponement risk a few days ago.

As soon as they announce there’s gonna be a pitch inspection, it’s effectively the same as when the ref goes to check the pitch side monitor in a premier league match tbh.

What about the time Vinny Jones and his mates were doing belly slides in the water before the game against Wimbledon was called off. Lots of us turned up that day and I don’t think it was called off until ko time. We had loads of money then but it didn’t help the drainage, and the ground staff were top of their game in those days. 
It’s been raining like hell, the game is called off, shit happens. It’s not a new thing at Ewood.
