This comment annoyed me last night although I didn't say anything. Reminded me of the transfer windows where you just spout nonsense that suits your agenda when the reality is the business the club will do is unknown. Just like there was always a chance this game would be off, hence the posters sensible comment hoping for it to be on. Maybe a lesson could be learnt here and you can start to be more receptive of the conditions around the club, in this case quite literally before writing something. Consider their concerns might be real and educated.

we don't know how bad the pitch is currently which is the unknown. 

I was in Blackburn this morning and it was windy more of a problem than they rain for me. I also drove home from work this morning in this weather

anyway I'm nor going over and over the same point. Time to watch some football now. Coventry vs Sheffield Utd for me

I don't think covers would help, as the water still needs to run off and drain somewhere, which would be still draining into the same system.

I suspect the problem is that surface water run off outfalls to the river and local/water authorities only allow you to discharge at a certain rate (xlitres/second). There is likely some kind of attenuation under the pitch and the limited discharge rate & high river level stops it emptying quick enough or doesn't allow it to discharge at all, and it backs up the system onto the pitch.

BUT, 11am?

Did we really have that amount of rain or was it the frozen pitch that prevented to rain that started earlier this morning from draining? How good is underground heating? Should or was the pitch covered in anticipation of the weather conditions?

Do we still have underground heating ? 

Last game , i remember being off was Millwall 3 years ago , I actually parked the car that day !

They can't really win in terms of the time it was called off..

They obviously didn't want to chance leaving it any later, as that would've been criticised, and if you call it off last night in anticipation of bad weather, that would also have been criticised.

Incredibly bad luck with the timing, and a day either side there would've been no issue.

Chaddy always is insistent that a game cannot be called off as he cant bear it. I remember when a game was called off an hour before a couple of years ago and he was in the ground messaging on here as he watched the goalkeeper warm up trying to prove that the game could go ahead.

There is obviously the issue with the river but a few years ago the owners refused to fund a promised pitch revamp that hadnt been done for 30 years, including drainage.

Most of the 2010/2012 departees have long gone and won’t be back whoever has the deeds.

The general floating fan will however, come more regularly if there’s a good well priced product to watch… we ain’t got one of those and never will under these owners (so yes all roads do go back to Venky’s in the end).

Disappointing that the game has been called off. Fee for the Pompey fans who have travelled but at least they weren't left waiting till 2pm or something ridiculous. Onto Boro away on Wednesday night. Hopefully our recent good form there continues.

Anyway Charlton scored just before half time to make it 0-1 but the ref called it off at half time. I used to have the programme. It was pretty bedraggled and rain damaged and it was in my inside pocket !

I love old stories like this!

I dread to think how many programmes I have had over the years thay have turned to mulch by the time I get home. Very oddly, part of the romance of it all I suppose. 

I have yet to get a 'digital matchday supplement' water damaged however.

We don't know how bad the pitch is currently? Chaddy man, it's literally been called off by the ref. That's how bad it is!

By the time we kick off at Middlesbrough on Wednesday it will have been two and a half weeks since we last played and the players match fitness will suffer. That's not ideal preparation for what is sure to be a really tough game.

That’s right. It’s always been at the bottom of a valley right next to a river. Whatever drainage system is in place or could be in place if money was spent won’t make a difference if it can’t drain into the river on days like this. You would have to have a pumping system in place and somewhere to pump it into on a temporary basis, which would be eye-wateringly expensive.

Didn't Rovers trained on the pitch after the game was called off? 

I remember that game, actually, the pitch was playable but the ref didn't fancy it at all. Stanley played that day at home, we didn't

Not an excuse for a professional.

Too many congested matches and it’s complaints about being tired, injuries etc. Then too long a gap between matches and it’s complaints about match fitness.

These are paid professionals - no excuse not to be match ready with a 2.5 week gap.

The match fitness will not be up to speed with not playing for two and a half weeks. Training is not a substitute for playing. It doesn't matter if they are professionals or not it's common sense that the level of match fitness suffers from not playing. Middlesbrough will have the benefit of playing today.

I'm 10 mins up the road from Ewood. It's lashed it down all lastnight and up to time of writing this. The pitch will is not playable.

It was clear from the week we have had and the forecast for today that there could be an issue. Looking at any news site talked about storm Bert. Therefore people were rightly concerned and were hoping the game would be on.

So if you say the condition of the pitch was unknown to you last. Ight why were you saying “The Game Will Be On”?

If there’s a storm with amber warnings why then it’s not “normal British weather”

Such a shame. Fancied us to win comfortably today.

Could have used the points and momentum. Now we have to go to Boro away and then Leeds. High likelihood of losing both and beginning the usual death spiral.

On the flip side, any points at all in the next two are good points.
