v Portsmouth (h) - 23/11/2024 GAME POSTPONED

Recommended Posts

Frustrating that today’s game was called off, but it isn’t the case that this was caused by just a bit of rain. There’s been snow and ice on the hills surrounding the area all week and the increased temperature today meant that all of that has thawed and flowed into the river and that, coupled with the heavy rain, has caused the issue.

Ewood isn’t the only area that has suffered - I’m in Bacup and the whole town centre here is under water because of the same thing

The referee should be available to inspect the pitch provided he is in the area otherwise a local referee would do it. As I said earlier inspecting a pitch several hours before kick off is difficult and several factors have to be considered including the forecast and more importantly the travelling supporters. Interestingly all the Scottish Premier league kick offs were delayed and all are going ahead now. Delaying a kick off is not something I can recall in the Premier League or even EFL.

Whilst I can imagine that delaying a kick-off could be a viable option for many games and different conditions I can’t see that it would have worked today. To get to Ewood for 3pm today a Portsmouth fan would have needed to catch a train at 6.45am and would not be home until after midnight with a normal finish. I imagine by road it would be much the same.

So even with a breakfast inspection 2,000 fans would also be well on their way and it would have been tough to make a clear decision then anyway. Delaying the kick-off would mean that anyone on the train would not be able to get home tonight.

How could you possibly know for sure that the pitch was playable, and more than the referee based on a couple of keepers diving around for a short while in the corner of the pitch.

I told you in previous response, plus the keepers trained in the penalty area pre game. Maybe you don't see that

You didnt know, you couldnt possibly have judged from that on par with the referee who will have done a full inspection, you were annoyed having travelled and just created an agenda that the referee having made the effort to get to Ewood just didnt fancy it.

Remember a game vs Boro years ago when the pitch was spectacularly waterlogged and yet we still played. I think we won and Woodgate was rubbish?

I'm sure our cost cutting would have not helped the situation. Not sure whether it tipped the balance or was immaterial but it's pretty crap our motto is every little hinders.
