I thought not, more likely he will end up with Palace or Burnley or Middlesbourgh. Why is that? Name a manager at this tournament who Real and City would like? I don't think that there is one. Perhaps Deschamps, who would be a gamble. Martinez - no chance. Yakin - the Swiss hate him. I can't name the Spain manager. Nagelsman seems to be going backwards. Koeman - he's not good enough. Steve Clarke - need I say more? International football management requires different skills than club management. Southgate is no Guardiola, but he is more than competent at international level.

Ok, what premier league clubs will be queueing up for him? My guess is the only ones looking at him will be intending to fight relegation next season or hoping for probmotion to the Premier league next season. DeeCee
My problem is, if that we win it, he will be Sir Gareth Southgate.

France are just as negative and he's not much love in France, but he is respected for the success that he has brought. He may get a gig somewhere in Ligue 1, but he wouldn't be hired anywhere else.

A bizarre extreme to take it to when most people I imagine would be happy with the game just being somewhat entertaining to watch, rather than a dreadful slog. I just want the players to show they’re as good as the media makes them out to be. Do that any no one can get in our way.

Thanks for the insight. I know precious little about the internal working of French football. He had a half decent club career before getting the France job and he's won a World Cup as a player and manager so with club chairmen liking shiny things I'd think someone would give him a look. I have no idea, but if Frank Lampard can get a job managing a Champions League qualifying team then so can Southgate. His stint in club management wasn't good, but he has done more for the national team than any other manager outside of Alf Ramsey, especially including his work prior to lucking into the job. I don't get the hate for him. England have been nearly men my whole life and I'm close to 50. The FA has tried every type of manager and still England have failed. Maybe the manager is only one part of it? The rabid press and the FA themselves are the only constants that have followed the national team. Both need to be held to account too.

Current coach Gregg Berhalter has a lot of Southgate in him. The USA host the World Cup in 2 years, they want to make sure that they are well accounted for so money won't be an object. Far more likely to be another uninspiring appointment from within the system like Lee Carsley or heaven forbid a serial failure like Lampard on the sole basis they're English. Hypothetically Klopp would be a good choice as well to inject some tempo and passion into the side instead of this painfully slow sideways and backwards passing game we appear to have fallen into.

Forever Blue
England major tournament history: In the 88 years pre-Gareth: 4 semis, 1 Final. Gareth: 3 semis, 1 final (maybe 2) Southgate out!!!🤣 Edited July 8, 2024 by Forever Blue

I agree, but we've got so used to reaching them under Southgate, it's like it's the norm, when prior to Southgate it very much wasn't. This isn't how it usually is watching England, it's semis or nothing from now on for the next incumbent.

Does it really matter IF we don't win any of them? It strikes me a bit of City/ Liverpool/Arsenal celebrating wildly because they've lost an FA Cup Semi Final or Final. Tyrone Shoelaces
It’s the quality of the football on display that gets me. We’re really poor to watch. With the players we’ve got we must be able to play better than that.
