But I was loving the euros I'll go against the grain, and say it's way better than the old pointless friendlies. The relegation/promotion format has added some jeopardy. To win a trophy, we have to play the best teams regularly, and learn how to beat them. Spain, Italy, Germany, France etc. We now need to get promoted to get back to playing those teams. So, there's actually quite a lot riding on the next few matches. Particularly against Greece. Give me this over the mind numbing crap you used to have against Lichtenstein with 8-10 substitutions in the 2nd half. That was a complete farce. Don't think the Nations League gets the credit it deserves. It helps some of the smaller Countries qualify for Tournaments. It's not perfect, but at least they tried to do something to increase the competitiveness of the international calendar. 7 Quote

Being bothered about what someone's ancestors or compatriots did is asinine at best. 8 Quote
Mattyblue Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 How about not replacing friendlies with anything and just play less internationals? Lets be frank all that matters in international football are the tournaments. The fact San Marino now get to play Andorra on a regular basis is neither here nor there, they could set up their own annual ‘Minnows Cup’ or something instead. We then don’t need to stop the season three times between September and November to play irrelevant games that I’d wager most fans, managers and players don’t give a monkeys about (of course they won’t just have the summer tournaments and their qualifiers, as, you know, UEFA want the cash). 1 1 Quote

By that logic, you're absolutely fine with 90% of the world justifying resentment and animosity towards the British? Should we hate the Irish? What about the Japanese? Was it OK that we signed Ohashi? Why did he get a visa? Should we hate all Russians? What about the Austrians? Feels like they get a pass. Is Andreas Weimann a Nazi? In living memory? Will it be OK for Tuchel to take charge of England in 20 years? That should cover the living memory part. It's a good thing my great, great, great, great grandfather died before I was born. Otherwise, I'd have a serious complex about the war of 1812. 2 Quote

It was a simple explanation as to why Germany is England’s greatest football enemy and why many fans would be aghast at Tuchel’s appointment. I also made it clear in a previous post that I have no problem with him as England manager, at least on the grounds of his nationality. As per usual you’ve jumped in with both feet and I hope this clears up any misunderstandings you may have. 2 Quote

roverandout Posted October 17, 2024 Author Posted October 17, 2024 Hopefully Wharton will get a chance under tuchel. I like this appointment because he's coming In with very little bias towards certain players. Everyone gets a clean slate. Of course there's exceptions like kane who he got the best out of but he's not going to be bothered whether they're playing in England or abroad. Southgate was very insular when predominantly picking players from the epl. Quote

But it could be an important step towards progression, particularly with the new manager in situ next year. I don't know the timelines, but IF we get promoted I think we'll be playing some of the big European teams in the run up to the next World Cup. If we don't, we'll still be against this current lot. Which is better practice for the battle of the top level International tournament including the likes of Brazil and Argentina. Not playing against Finland and Ireland, that's for sure. We need bigger tests for the manager to cut his teeth. 2 Quote

Hopefully he plays the best team, and not necessarily just shoehorning the best players into any position for the sake of it. 3 Quote
Mattyblue Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) You love the Nations League, roverandout? If it was scrapped tomorrow nobody would even remember it existed in a decade’s time. Edited October 17, 2024 by Mattyblue Quote

Mattyblue Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 How about they just get rid of it and don’t replace with friendlies either? Ideal all round for the 99% of football fans who don’t give a toss about international football outside tournaments. 2 Quote

Yes, but the way in which you answered the question implied that you at least saw some logic behind the justification. Not overly interested in debating it, but it's insane to care where the England manager comes from based on things that his country did - especially before he was born. It's quite pathetic that most of England's 'greatest' footballing enemies would barely describe our relationships as a rivalry. 3 Quote

Southgate was very insular when predominantly picking players from the epl. The bigger concerns for England fans should be the growing financial disparity in the game and the declining English players at the top level. From a Guardian article March last year: "On more than one Premier League weekend of late, only 28% of starting players have been eligible for England – the lowest ever number. More generally it has been about 32%." https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/mar/16/gareth-southgate-fears-successor-will-face-shortage-of-english-players There’s a balance to be struck, with overseas players raising levels, at the same time, if smaller clubs want to compete with the oligarch clubs, they’re more likely to bring in an experienced players than take a risk on giving young players a chance. And an experienced player from abroad will probably be cheaper than here. Edited October 17, 2024 by riverholmes 1 Quote

Mattyblue Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 I don’t know a single person that has an issue with Germany or Germans. And when you go there they love speaking to Brits. Culturally very similar people. Long standing allies pre and post a couple of rather unfortunate incidents in the first half of the 20th century. 3 Quote
