Lewis plays for City, I think, so is a shoe in if Pep allows it. We played well mostly, a bit of brilliance by Jones for his goal from a great attack. Gallagher put in a hell of a shift. Every single player in the England team showed by endeavour they want to play for the team. A very watchable game Morgan Rogers plays for Villa. Emery is letting him shine. Lewis Hall is Newcastle's left back. They signed him from Chelsea. Chaddy has been talking him up for a while. Jones, Gallagher, and Madueke, played really well. Bellingham looked like the "old" Bellingham. I know that most on here couldn't give a hoot about the Nations League but I think it's important that England beat ROI on Sunday. England need to play top opposition. The World Cup qualifying draw is next month. England will be seeded. 3 Quote

jim mk2 Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 (edited) Have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the England match last night - and I wouldn't have said that with the first XI and many of the games under Gareth Southgate. The team were up for it from the kickoff and apart from 20 minutes in the second half and one or two chances, were too good for a very decent Greece team. Hall looks a player Edited November 15, 2024 by jim mk2 2 Quote
joey_big_nose Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 Unpopular opinion but the Nations League has been a good innovation as it creates competitive games against similar opposition instead of friendlies. But for it to make sense they also need to cut the daft qualifier games against San Merino etc. Just use the Nations League for qualifying and get rid of the qualifiers completely imo. 2 Quote
roversfan99 Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 Im not sure its that competitive in that its just a made up competition that the players seem to see as a hindrance. But those friendlies didnt need replacing. Quote
AllRoverAsia Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 That was a competitive match last night between teams who were up for it. Greece were good opposition, a bit agricultural in their challenges but I'm not against that, it's preparation for what happens outside of the PL safe space. These games are better preparation that friendlies unless maybe we bring back the Home Internationals which old codgers like me remember. They were usually anything but friendly. We do need to get into the top bracket of of the NL and play the top sides. So, IF the NL is as worthless as claimed by some on here what is the viable alternative to using the NL or friendlies as useful tournament preparation. Playing keep up at St Georges Park isn't enough. 1 Quote
Mattyblue Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 (edited) If they hadn’t have replaced the friendlies in the first place, so just two international windows instead of four and just have qualifiers and tournaments - I doubt a single football fan would have complained. I still think that the major motivator for England partisipating, is paying off the debt of rebuilding Wembley. Edited November 15, 2024 by rigger 1 Quote
roversfan99 Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 This defence of the nations league that it is better than friendlies is flawed. It doesnt need to be one or the other. We are over a year and a half from a tournament, we dont need to be creating mini tournaments to prepare for it. Greece like all 3 opponents in the group failed to qualify for an extended 24 team Euros, with Georgia knocking them out. They arent strong. 1 Quote

Pointless games that simply dont need to be in the packed calendar and ones that the players clearly arent fond of. 2 Quote

roversfan99 Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 They are bigger than the pointless nations league. I havent seen anyone suggest that they should get rid of World Cups and Euros. 3 Quote

Certain periods of the season are allocated for internationals. Also, if all the other countries are playing in the Nations League who do we play against ? Quote

If we are playing friendlies we could choose to play when is convenient for us. The allocated times for internationals, are for Nations league games. I have not seen anything that dictates when friendlies must be played. Quote
