Southgate's only achievement as a manager other than working for the FA is to get Middlesbrough relegated. I'm not old enough to comment on Walter Winterbottom as I don't remember him Not having a go at you it just annoys me. I've never had a particular beef about the honours system previously but given the two highest profile recipients this year, you might well have a point! Winterbottom had to do whatever he could with the players the selectors chose. Sir Alf put a stop to that. Regarding Southgate as a bloke I really liked him, great son in law material. He came over really well as a human being on “ Desert Island Discs “ recently. As a coach he just didn’t have that X factor that separates the top achievers from the also rans. He could have coached England for the next 25 years and we still wouldn’t have looked like winning anything. Edited December 31, 2024 by Tyrone Shoelaces 2 Quote

roverandout Posted January 1 Author Posted January 1 Southgate's in game management cost us in two finals and a semi final. Under tuchel it will be a completely different ball game 1 Quote
roversfan99 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 We have heard this all before. The next one will be our tournament. Quote

M_B Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Arise Sir Gareth, Some need to remember the mess the England set up was in before he took over and transformed the kids. It is his overall input which has led to the honour. Easy to criticise, but we've gone from a country which had players making excuses not to play, to a country where just making the final isn't now deemed good enough. That's some transformation under one bloke. Well deserved in my opinion. 4 Quote
Norbert Rassragr Posted January 3 Posted January 3 For all the criticism about lacking that edge to win, the Euros were the first time I've seen England in a final, and I'm 43. Southgate's response when Saka missed that penalty shows he is a decent guy. Still, we should have won against Italy. 3 Quote

If we had gone for the kill, we'd have won comfortably. Same with Croatia. We were completely dominant first half. Then there was Spain after we equalised. There was a few moments we rattled them but as in all 3 cases we reverted to type by bottling it. Sitting back playing long balls. It's an English mentality thing as much as southgate's fault. Hopefully under tuchel he has a proper gamelan Quote
chaddyrovers Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I wonder if he will any more coaches to his team before the first game or whether he will keep it a small coaching team? Quote
RevidgeBlue Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Very good documentary on Sky about Tuchel - "The Road to England". I think we've got a real gem, finally. 2 Quote
