It's not like a loan where the player was returning to their club. Had we given Forshaw a 2.5 year or even 1.5 year contract, it'd be (rightly) said to be poor business. With Yuri, we've essentially had a trial period before committing. You don't think we will be paying a higher wage on this new deal now he has been solid in this league? Because I do. Nothing smart about it, we didn't even put an extension option in the initial deal. If he'd decided he didn't like the circus here, or he'd grabbed another club's attention, we'd have essentially been trialling him on someone else's behalf. It was obvious from game 1 that the length of the deal was a mistake. And Forshaw is old and was performing poorly for a poor side. A 1.5 or 2.5 year deal would have clearly been a mistake before he kicked a ball. In fact signing him til the summer was a clear mistake. Quote

He will be 23 at the start of next season and his only real experience has been loans at Bolton in League One, Dundee in the SPL and Rovers in the Championship. He is getting another Championship club at best. I can't see very many paying more than £3 million for a Championship LB. If we were a sensible club with any sort of strategy or investment then he'd be top of the list for an offer, but we saw with Harrison Reed that we've no interest in making these players permanent and prefer to put them in the shop window so that a rival club can move in and buy them the year after. I suspect he will end up at a Middlesbrough, Stoke, West Brom etc. I suppose we will see on that. Quote
Tomphil2 Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Interesting podcast i stumbled upon on Youtube i think it was called The Business of Football, they were interviewing the Plymouth CEO. He stressed the point of regular communication being paramount at community clubs who were very much up against it budget wise. Engaging with the whole fanbase and community and developing that understanding all in it together making then feel important and part of it because it helps during in the sticky periods. Touched on head coaches/managers wages saying they start in the Champ from a couple of hundred grand per year if it's a longer contract up to a million plus for bigger names and short term deals. He said 1 year contracts for older or experienced players are becoming the norm, agents like them because the terms are bigger, clubs outside the top end and parachute clubs favour them now due to worrying about relegation. You can exactly see what the mindset is at Ewood now it's almost the same as a club who've spent most of their recent times in league 1 and expected nothing more than fighting relegation this season. Yes they are capable of bigger gates in a bigger untapped area but even he said they can't charge a lot and they've not got billionaire owners. Also only just starting out with their academy. I cannot help but think the russian roulette policy in terms of going with such a low budget is being done on purpose now by tweedle dum and tweedle dee. Quote

He's been one of the best LBs in the league until his injury, he's not exactly about to drop to League One. At 23 with the potential to improve and already showing he can be one of the best in his position at this level, 2 or 3 million would be a ridiculous bargain for someone. He doesn't need to improve much more to look Premiership ready. His previous CV doesn't really matter anymore. Obviously we're a badly-ran club, and we could perhaps have got an option to buy for 2 mill ish at the time we loaned him. But as you say we've no ambition or forethought. Quote
