FA Cup - season 2024-25

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again when the FA Cup third round draw is upon us. As a old traditionalist the FA Cup still a really important part of football and one of the highlights of recent seasons was reaching the quarter final a couple of years ago. I want a home tie primarily but if we do get drawn away I don't want it to be against a Premier League team. Either a League Two or non League team away would potentially give us a live TV match and the riches that go with it. And, more importantly for us fans an opportunity to progress.

The draw is live on BBC 2 at 7 pm on Monday.

Why is it a week later than the usual third round weekend? I’ve looked online but can’t see a reasoning.

Because all the football league play on New Year's day which is a Wednesday, and the TV companies want the choice to show a Friday night game, which would probably be a EFL team at home to a Prem team. So the turn around is too short.

As a youngster in the late 1950s and for years after the most awaited match day was the FA Cup Third Round day, the 2nd was when the Draw was made.

They've killed that joy.

The three big dates in the football calendar for me were opening day, Boxing Day and FA Cup third round day (providing we weren't floundering in Division 3). I can remember crowding round a transistor radio at school on the Monday after each round to listen to the draw being made live on Radio Two. Now they spin a simple draw into a thirty minute programme where inane chat and predictable questions are the order of the day.

Good days.

God Bless the small tinny transistor radio that I had to hold next to my ear to hear anything. It did the job.

I have wonderful memories of my grandad writing down the FA Cup draws as they happened, live from FA HQ in Soho on a Monday lunchtime.

I suppose it is better now than it has been at points over the past decade, I can recall when it was exclusively on ITV and all the draws were done at odd points between the two Sunday fixtures, like 1445 and what have you. For all the inane gibber Kelly Somers and co will serve up tomorrow, at least it gives it a sense of place and distinction again. Just a shame we'll have no 'x OR y' ties in it...

United away - it's been too long since we've been there!

Stay away from Utd now.  Any big team at home.  Liverpool be good.  Or a lower tean if we want a chance to progress. I suppose all teams are lower than Liverpool, what I was getting ar was a bittom half prem outfit.  Everton be a good one, Villa right now before they fix themselves.

Personal preference is a tie home or away against Salford, Exeter, Orient, Tamworth, Bromley, Harrogate, Morecambe or Wycombe.

A change to the usual routine, either a new ground or an interesting/easy trip, or at least a game we should win.

I can see the appeal of a Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, City away but personally not that interested. A final visit to Goodison would be nice I suppose.

Definitely don't want a Championship side away, nor anyone like Brighton, Fulham, Bournemouth, Southampton, Palace etc.

Home draw against a shit team we can steam roll and progress on to the next round.

Exactly the less glamorous the better as long as we progress to the next round for as long as possible.

Third round draw and there's been an interview with new Man United fella and now Mark Hughes and Dion Dublin asked their opinions on him pre draw. Get those fuckers away to a European Super League and leave us all be.
