Good chance of being on TV as well

I reckon Man City game at Leyton Orient or Derby, Liverpool game at Plymouth, Newcastle game at Birmingham, Villa vs Spurs, Exeter vs Forest will be TV games.

With no replays I think that's the end of proper cup upsets. Sure, we'll get a league one side beating a championship side etc but we're not going to see none league outfits knocking out a top division side ever again.

There's no way the lower division teams can compete with the fitness, strength, quality and depth of the higher level.

Complete joke. Oh well, at least we get more turgid early round European games where Man City and Real Madrid can plod on for 90 minutes as they just go through the motions.

No chance Man Utd won’t be picked. Doesn’t matter if it’s Arsenal away or Barnet at home, if they’re in the cup, they’re on TV.

All about the ratings as millions of pathetic armchair glory hunters will be tuning in.

I can’t find a more up to date figure but as at March ‘23 they’d had 83 of their previous 84 ties televised in the UK.

Hmm. Tamworth were literally two blocked shot in injury time away from beating Spurs this afternoon, which would have been the biggest FA Cup shock in my living memory.

Same with Liverpool.

But instead they got pumped in extra time rather than earning a replay.

With a replay on offer they smaller team can set up to be a solid defensive unit and play for the draw. Without the replay they have to try and win it in normal time as they will run out of steam come extra time as we saw with the spurs match.

It's just shit and as per usual it's all about making life easier for the biggest and richest clubs.

I’d argue that over two legs, the bigger club has a greater advantage than in a single leg that goes to extra time. It’s easy to say now because Spurs ultimately won, but Tamworth were 30 mins from penalties. That’s a better shot than another 90 away from home.

Certainly good arguments regarding the huge financial benefits for smaller clubs etc but don’t think scrapping replays significantly alters the odds of a big cupset.

Have there been any  ‘giant killings’  in replays other than Hereford (vs Newcastle)?

chorley beat wolves over 2 replays in 1986,remember the 3 rd game being at burnden park and chorley ran out 3-0 winners!!!they drew preston at home  in the next round and played it at ewood.incidentally it was our biggest crowd that season, just over 16000🙂

Err, Oxford v Rovers in 1964. We were near the top of the old First Division and flying, scoring goals for fun, they had only just been promoted to the old fourth division. When i saw the 3-1 score come in on the old BBC teletype I thought “ They’ve made a mistake there, it will be the other way around “. No it wasn’t !

Not a replay but any Rovers my age will still bear the scars !

Was that Oxford match a replay Tyrone? I remember the shock LT front page though. Still haven't recovered!

Earning the replay itself was a win for the smaller clubs, especially if they got to go play a premiership side away.

Now that's been taken away from them. Stealing from the poor to give to the rich as per usual.

Reasonable draw for us. Home game against poor prem opposition and the away team will sell out the Darwen end.

However this is not the main take home from this round. This is the first time since the disgraceful, gravy train, elitist decision to remove replays, that a really low down team has been affected vs prem opposition.

Tamworth should be looking forward to a money spinning exciting opportunity to play at Spurs new magnificent ground. Instead they're knackered, having to play an extra 30 mins and out the competition. That money could have set them up for the next 5 years.

The irony shouldn't be lost that it is against Spurs, who played that ridiculous friendly on the other side of the planet 3 days after the season ended. Football utterly rotten to the core. Pr!cks.

Worst kind of draw for me. A lesser Prem team but still with a deeper squad of quality than we can muster, so can likely rest players and still field a much stronger side. We can't rest many unless we are fine to exit the cup. Not one of the glamorous sides, so unlikely to attract a big gate, and any casual fans that go get drawn in for a dose are likely to just see us lose. If you do get one of the more glamorous sides away it can be a nice wedge.

Basically, they'll probably beat us, and we'll probably have most of our first team giving their all and wearing themselves out at the start of a congested fixture run. There's the prospect of a higher league scalp, sure, but not one of the really rewarding ones. Only get 45% of the gate on what will be a modest crowd. The sold out away end you mentioned probably means more need for policing if it happens.

I always want a home game against lower league opponents. More chance of progression, chance to rest knackered players, and the opportunity for some of the younger players to cut their teeth or fringe players to make their case. Course, we managed to balls it up in the EFL Cup against Blackpool, but that shouldn't have happened.

Totally agree on the bullshit of the elites robbing lower league teams of life-giving replays just to save themselves a match. Then they turn around and refuse to give decent solidarity down the leagues even though their money pot is creating intense downwards pressure on wages.

Another nail in English football and its traditions, having no FA Cup replays is a disgrace.

It’s all about the big clubs and money, hang yours heads in shame English FA!

It may be a break with tradition, but I love the fact that the replays have been ditched.

There's just too much football now and there's no need to add extra fixtures in. I also think it gives smaller sides a much better chance. If we were to play City, do you think we have a better chance in 30 extra minutes or if we have to start from scratch (and they may pick a stronger side second time around).

Not only that, as a neutral, there were matches I then tuned in for this weekend that I wouldn't have under the old system as they were level and heading towards extra time.
