Ade Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 Maybe you could help me catch up on a year of western music-deprivation. Dying to buy some music when I get back, and my usual stuff last year was: Radiohead Death in Vegas Coldplay Nick Cave PJ Harvey Turin Brakes Eels (christ, all the happy stuff there, eh!?) Gillian Welch, and other alt. country Massive Attack Zero-7 Also DJs Mr Scruff and Nitan Sawney (spelt wrong probably) So what should I be watching out for?

colin Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I'd say that Nick Cave's "Nocturama" is a mandatory purchase.
Simon Says Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I dug out The Black album by The Damned last week. Still sounds pretty good. Curtain Call, all sixteen minutes of it. Punk eh! :'>
Drummer Boy Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I dug out The Black album by The Damned last week. Still sounds pretty good. Curtain Call, all sixteen minutes of it. Punk eh! :'> Uncanny that - I've just dug out "Machine Gun Etiquette" - arguably their finest hour, though I do have an unhealthy liking for "Curtain Call" as well. Proof that they could play as well!
CornwallRover Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I'd say that Nick Cave's "Nocturama" is a mandatory purchase. This man speaks the truth. Speaking of Nick Cave colin, at 11:15 tonight on ITV The Southbank Show has an hour long interview with Mr Cave, should make very good viewing. Also he releases a dvd tommorrow of a live concert from 2001 called God Is In The House.
colin Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I dug out The Black album by The Damned last week. According to Dave Vanium it was called "The Black Album" because........oh well, back to the "Cannabis thread" Speaking of Nick Cave colin, at 11:15 tonight on ITV The Southbank Show has an hour long interview with Mr Cave, should make very good viewing. Also he releases a dvd tommorrow of a live concert from 2001 called God Is In The House. Ta Cornwall, I knew about the former, but not the latter. Time to buy a DVD.
stegraham Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 I think "Stawberries" (the one with the pig on the front) is my favourite Damned album. Ignite, Pleasure and the pain, Under the Floor etc - loads of great songs! Ste
Simon Says Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Machine Gun Etiquette is a good album. Smash it up, Melody Lee and the awesome Plan9 Channel7. As for The Black Album I thought it was a direct reply to The Beatles White Album. How innocent was I? And you are right Ste Strawberries was also good. The only problem was my copy had the "sniffy" lyric sheet. The house smelt of Strawberries for weeks!
S15 Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 i think inxs were a good band, they along with the who and zeppelin have been enjoying there annual visit to my cd player, and imo there music is just as enjoyable.
Drummer Boy Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Everybody should listen to the first Cramps album in five years "Fiends of Dope Island" - it is mindblowing and impossible to pigeon-hole. Their finest work since "Smell of Female".
Tarka Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I've lately dug out my dust-covered copy of Roni Size's debut album, New Forms. Seem to appreciate it better second time round.
S15 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 purchased three new albums all top notch... neil young : weld (only NY album i have and need, absolute quality) stone gossard : bayleaf (got cheap second hand off amazon, very good alternate listening, not just ed ved in PJ ya know!) pearl jam : mansfield number three (pearl jam, nearly 50 tracks, live..nothing else needs saying)
colin Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 neil young : weld (only NY album i have and need, absolute quality) I'd suggest "Rust Never Sleeps" before you dismiss Neil Young.
S15 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 neil young : weld (only NY album i have and need, absolute quality) I'd suggest "Rust Never Sleeps" before you dismiss Neil Young. i'm not dismissing him... i just think weld is possibly his best album.. top artist, just some albums are too short for purchase imo... so the 2 disks of weld offers the best value or money perhaps.
Simon Says Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 pearl jam : mansfield number three (pearl jam, nearly 50 tracks, live..nothing else needs saying) Yes it does. What do you think of it? IMO Footsteps sends shivers down the spine and is simply magnificent! As is Indifference, Off He Goes, All Those Yesterdays, Given to Fly, Nothingman, Betterman, Faithful etc etc....
Rovermatt Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 I received the newest White Stripes album for my birthday. It is absolutely brilliant.

IMO Footsteps sends shivers down the spine and is simply magnificent! As is Indifference, Off He Goes, All Those Yesterdays, Given to Fly, Nothingman, Betterman, Faithful etc etc.... it's a strange cd.... nothing like anything else i've listened too... i've heard every song on it hundreds and thousends of times before, yet when you hear them its as if its the first time you've ever heard it.... wierd, but i love it!
dufferlover Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 Anyone see the video for the White Stripes' " I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself?" All the male board members should love it!!!!
samtheozzy Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 Calexico - Feast of Wire. Alternative / Country / Mariarchi. Genuinely original.
RoyRover Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 My brother downloaded aload of Audiovent stuff which is pretty sweet. The lead singer is the brother of the lead singer of Incubus, another quality band. I want to get the Clipse album as well as the new DMX one. The new Deftones album should be great, if that song Minerva is anything to go by.
Drummer Boy Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 This week, I have mostly been listening to..... Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk, anyone? A real groundbreaker, if just on the wrong side of insanity for many, but definitely years ahead of it's time.
LeChuck Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 How many people from here are going to Leeds festival? I'm setting off tomorrow (yes, I know it starts Friday but what the hell). I was thinking of taking my 'Dirty dirty Leeds' T-Shirt...but I don't think I will since I like my nose where it is.
Cocker Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 dufferlover Posted on Aug. 18 2003, 01:35 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone see the video for the White Stripes' " I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself?" All the male board members should love it!!!! Kate Moss seems to like it a little too Anyone heard the new B.R.M.C Album - quality
Roverrated Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 I am listening to Good Charlotte, and I have just found Now 38 so I shall stick that on for a laugh - Chumbawamba, Spice Girls, Hanson, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys, Louise (phwoor!), Dario G, Ricky Martin, Bellini, Hot Chocolate, Wet Wet Wet, George Michael, The Verve, Meredith Brooks, Jon Bon Jovi, Peter Andre.....ahhh what classic artists of yester year. (I of course exclude Peter Andre, The Spice Girls and George Michael from that last comment).
Radagast Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 ........Good Charlotte, I could write a f**king book here.......... .....but I won't.
