CornwallRover Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 My brother downloaded aload of Audiovent stuff which is pretty sweet. The lead singer is the brother of the lead singer of Incubus, another quality band. I want to get the Clipse album as well as the new DMX one. The new Deftones album should be great, if that song Minerva is anything to go by. The Deftones album is really good, well worth the money you'll spend on it. The Kings of Leon's debut album is pure class, in my top 3 of the year so far with The Darkness at No.1, and Nick Cave at No.2.

Rovermatt Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 I am very impressed with The Darkness. At first I thought they were some sort of parody act, but the music is actually very good. I have been considering buying the Deftones new album for some time. I really liked 'Minerva.'
colin Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 This week, I have mostly been listening to..... Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk, anyone? A real groundbreaker, if just on the wrong side of insanity for many, but definitely years ahead of it's time. "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" More of a "Clear Spot" man myself. "Mr Zoot Horn Rollo hit that long looming note & let it float"

"Mr Zoot Horn Rollo hit that long looming note & let it float" Clearly an aficionado, Colin - good choice, mate. "Doc at the Radar Station" is (probably) my favourite, though I haven't heard everything yet. Since my last post, I have mostly been listening to ...... "Youth and Young Manhood" by the Kings of Leon - I got this a few weeks ago and am really getting into it now - there's an early ZZ Top feel to it mixed in with a hint of the Strokes - excellent debut, if you ask me!
Morph Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 neil young : weld (only NY album i have and need, absolute quality) I'd suggest "Rust Never Sleeps" before you dismiss Neil Young. i'm not dismissing him... i just think weld is possibly his best album.. top artist, just some albums are too short for purchase imo... so the 2 disks of weld offers the best value or money perhaps. Both great albums but Harvest gets my vote every time. Admittedly Harvest is the more mainstream of the three, but the simple fact that it contains "The Needle and the Damage Done" is enough for me.
colin Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 "Doc at the Radar Station" is (probably) my favourite, though I haven't heard everything yet. "Trout Mask Replica" I think I've spent about 20 years trying to get to grips with that one!

"Trout Mask Replica" I think I've spent about 20 years trying to get to grips with that one! Strangely enough it was "Trout Mask replica" that got me into Beefheart - utterly inaccessible at first but I gradually got into it's groove. Unfortunately, my wife exhibits signs of extreme mental illness if I play it, so I have to wait until she goes out!! She's a bit the same with hawkwind - another much underrated band who have made some real gems amidst the dross over the years and were often way ahead of their time.
Rovermatt Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 I just downloaded the entire Audiovent album, 'Dirty, Sexy Nights in Paris.' It is very impressive.
nellybc Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 I am very impressed with The Darkness. At first I thought they were some sort of parody act, but the music is actually very good. just got back from leeds festival and they put on a great show as well as sounding cool live.

A real groundbreaker, if just on the wrong side of insanity for many, but definitely years ahead of it's time. Great album, but I reckon Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot double CD is even better (and top value), and also Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller).

At first I thought they were some sort of parody act, but the music is actually very good. just got back from leeds festival and they put on a great show as well as sounding cool live. The Darkness rocked! I was right at the front for that one and it was one of the best performances I've seen. The Datuns also put on a great show.
nellybc Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 The Datuns also put on a great show. hey glad u enjoyed darkness & datsuns thought that datsuns were really cool, even the new songs sound great this early, the guitarists really rock and try to put on a show as well saturday was a great day for me with seeing great bands at the main stage
Ste B Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 I only got the Friday in. but Metallica were as professional as usual, even though they missed out One from their set list (probably due to all the messing around fixing the safety barriers) System of a Down surprised me, considering I dont normally like their stuff. Hell is For Heroes in the Radio 1 stage stole the show for me though.

damian Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 Went to see Beck at the Brixton Acadamy last week - he was in fine form with most of the melancholy last album stuff (fine if you've just been dumped and feeling sorry for yourself) compressed into the middle of a fine set, although the medley of 'Crazy in Love', 'Rock your body' and that TATU song a little odd - the wife who has more 'middle of the road' tastes enjoyed it though... Still a star.

I liked the bit where he was on about the Iraq war and thanking people...then said 'F**k you from the bottom of my heart' to the people who supported it. Anybody see Radio 4? I wasn't expecting a whole lot but they were great, Har Mar Superstar joined them for the last song which was cool. Just read on NME.com that Meg White went on stage with Brendan Benson in the Carling tent I'm really @#/? that I missed that
RoyRover Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 Hell is For Heroes in the Radio 1 stage stole the show for me though. They're brilliant.
Roverrated Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 Have just bought a few new albums - Kosheen, Coral, The Thrills and Feeder - all class.

samtheozzy Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 Now listening to Born Sandy Devotional by The Triffids. Fine atmospheric music that was much more popular in England than in Australia. Sidenote: This is my 100th post at the rate of 0.20 posts per day. At this rate it will take me 12.3 years to reach 1000 posts. By that stage I will be 35 which may well be old enough to have acquired the world-weariness that inspired CheshireBlue's 1000th post (found here) :'>
Mattyblue Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 Saw Metallica in Dublin-AMAZING! When the first two songs are Battery and Master of Puppets you know its going to be good! The Irish crowd were tough though, they got booed for not playing Whisky in the Jar! ps Linkin Park-utter S***e!

Did they mime like when I saw them earlier in the year ?? p.s Metallica Indoor tour this december - first confirmed date Earls Court 20th Dec... Don't think they mimed, just a flat performance. Great news about the winter tour, Lars told the crowd in Dublin that they were coming back to play The Point.
