I'm one of those people who really wanted to hate The Darkness, but they're growing on me - you can't really dislike anyone who has as good a time as they seem to do, and they're pretty immune to having the **** taken out of them.[shameless plug]I've been busy lately recording my own band's album, so I haven't had time to listen to much else...[/shamless plug]

I'm going to see Bob Dlyan in November though - I've seen him twice but he's pretty inconsistent. You get the feeling that if he played all his best songs he'd easily bring the house down, but being Bob Dylan, he likes to play mostly obscure stuff with the odd famous tune thrown in.

Oh I see what you did there. :<img src=:'>

Much as I like Darkness, I'm afraid they're paving the way for a wave of crappy 70s-style bands like the terrible Kings of Leon, just like all the crappy "The" bands that were dragged along behind The Strokes hype wagon.

Most recent purchases:

Ecliptica and Winterhearts's Guild by Sonata Arctica, A Night at the Opera by Blind Guardian and Sword's Song by Battlelore.

Can somebody tell me why so many people think the Darkness are so fantastic?  To me, they sound like a bad heavy metal band of old.

The Strokes have a new album out in about 10 days.  First impressions are that this will be worth a listen.

Couldn't agree more Rosie, apparently it's all to do with irony. More than anyone else they remind me of Love Fist (fictional British 80's metal outfit in GTA Vice City). Just bought the new Four Tet album (deeply odd, but in a good way) and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by The Herbaliser, which is the business.

Sorry for posting twice so close together, but...........

The Darkness are not "ironic" or a Spinal Tap band or whatever. What they are is a Classic Rock band (not Metal) that wear the same ridiculous clothes as that original Classic Rock bands did back in the 70s/80s. Which in some people's eyes makes them a joke. It's not like they're some overnight sucess story like all the Pop 'ldle' dirges out there, they've been gigging and writing songs for years.

Would have to disagree with you on this one Radaghast. I think the fact that The Darkness look to ape the attire of Classic Rock Bands from the 70's and 80's (which, let us remember, are widely acknowledged as the decades which taste forgot) only serves to underline the ironic conceit which underpins the band. The idea of the rock band as post-modern statement does indeed have it's echoes in This Is Spinal Tap (it's just that Spinal Tap was twenty years ahead of it's time), but judged by any serious criteria, I find The Darkness wanting in some regards. This is not to say that they are without merit, but (like two of my favourite acts in a different genre, Lemon Jelly and Wagon Christ) they shouldn't be taken too seriously. Only my opinion of course, and I would echo your sentiments with regard to pap idle and the like. As with all music (except country & western) if it puts a smile on your face, who am I to criticise?

Ok, the Darkness sound like a dodgy 70's metal band.

Its a lot different from all those who want to sound like bad 60's bands like the Strokes, White Stripes, Kings of Leon and their countless clones that keep jumping on the bandwagon.

Which bad 60s bands do you think the Strokes are trying to sound like?  I'd never have put them in that category.

I wasn't really being critical of the Darkness (was I?), just asking a question because I can't understand the fascination of them - I really did think they sounded like Saxon or Iron Maiden when I heard them and I didn't understand why the dj playing them nearly had an orgasm!

Probably 'cause the DJ realy liked / likes Saxon and Iron Maiden!!  For me though they're Whitesnake.

As someone who buys the NME I'm now in two minds as to buy the new Stokes album - I'm sick of bloody reading about them.

Looking forward to hearing the Jet album though - ordered over tinterweb and should arrive anyday. A "brand new sound" or something - a cross between AC/DC and The Rolling Stones - if that's not a good advert I don't know what is.

The Darkness don't offer anything revolutionary in music terms, but I think they collect all the best bits of rock and also bring back some of the things that have been missing.

Anybody labelling them as a 'comedy act' or whatever is being unfair - musically they are very gifted - good riffs, proper guitar solos, the singing is exceptional and as a live act they are awesome - I was blown away by how good they were.

Can't wait for The Strokes' new album either, could possibly the THE album of the year.
