broadsword Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 Twas always so , Radaghast - I remember the days of Tony Parsons and the odious Julie Burchill . I can't stand that fat ugly cow. She once referred to Pele's term of "the beautiful game" as homosexual. I mean for chrissakes, calling the most top football bloke who ever lived a shirt-lifter - cheeky bitch. One of those fat sweaty mingers with a face like horse's dimpled behind who takes out her frustration on geezers. A femi-nazi in short.

She should talk, spent quite some time as a carpet muncher as I recall. Any road, back to the topic. For sheer comedy value Scooter's "Stadium Techno Experience" "Tie Your Shoes" "Respect to the man in the Ice Cream Van" and .... wait for it.... "Were not the Monkees, but we have the key"
Radagast Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 What in the blue hell is going on with your post count Bryan old boy?
broadsword Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 I got penalised for talking too much. You should see what happened to Tugay4England though!
colin Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 Twas always so , Radaghast - I remember the days of Tony Parsons and the odious Julie Burchill . Ooophs, sorry Phil, we collide again. I always thought that the days of the NME with Burchill and Parsons were the most exciting times of the NME. Now that both of them have descended into slagging each other off in Sunday magazines & broadsheets, and descending into Daily Mail collumns they have both lost the credibility which got them their jobs in the first place. I preferred them when they were speed-fuelled teenagers.
Nate Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 At the moment I've been listening to heaps of Dilinja, Massive Attack and Gatecrasher and ADF. Anyone confirm rumours of a new Portishead album?
S15 Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 Best newly released album in ages is Pearl Jam Riot Act.. though im extremely bias!! Top album. Gets better the more you hear it. Not as good as Ten or the mighty Yield but good all the same. I saw them at the MEN arena 2 years ago, but it looks like being a while until they tour Britain again. They have just toured Australia and Japan. They are now doing a massive US tour that takes them till the end of July. Looks like we will have to wait. They've got European dates confirmed, but Paris is the closest they come to the UK at the moment. where have you heard they are going to paris?! the closest the website reports them coming to britain is florida basically!! if they are going to paris though, that aint too bad. never know, might coincide with rovers playin psg in uefa cup??!!
Rovermatt Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 Hmmm I wouldn't really call Rage Metal and definitely not Nu-Metal (far, far too mature and distanced from the mainstream). I know I did hear a genre for them but it's slipped me mind. Matt - surely left wing activist is a contradiction in terms of some sort anyway? As for Coldplay............I've never been so underwhelmed in my life. Anything the NME jizzes over (Idlewild excluded) is always suspect. Sorry are you talking to me? As for NME, it has to be the most pretentious music guide in the world. The way it champions extremely dodgy groups who are in some way 'underground' is ridiculous. Anything that is anyway mainstream is looked down upon, no matter how good it is.

Last I heard was that Beth Gibbons had come out with a debut album. It's called 'Out Of Season'. Check it.

The NME has always been the same. They are the ultimate in the build em up knock down. They have always been under the mistaken missapprehension that they are in some way guiding the nations musical tastes. W******!

Anything that is anyway mainstream is looked down upon, no matter how good it is. Only the middle paragraph, I was talking to Cornawall with the first one, and just making a genral observation with the Coldplay bit. The NME's favourite-playing is nauseating Coldplay - second rate indie-pop band with a few (half) decent sings on the first album. As an aside, Chris Martin is a self important, pretentious @#/?. Strokes - a complete joke. Absolutely worthless. White Stripes - decent outfit. However the praise they get is ridiculous. Especially nonsense like saying (eg) the way the drums are so simplistic is designed to contrast with the <insert your own over the top adjective here> guitar to genius effect. I'd say its simply down to Jack White realising he needed a drummer for rythm and brought in his sister as a favour. But then, I am rambling. Etc Etc

Well not really, surely they aren't the only bands that NME have fawned upon in its decades of existence. That list is indeed impressive except for the highly overrated Strokes and Radiohead. Oh and Radaghast I didn't mention left-wing activism. I was referring to RATM as left-wing commies, which if anything may have a hint of tautology :'>
damo gally Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 That list is indeed impressive except for the highly overrated Strokes and Radiohead. Radiohead are not over rated at all in my opinion, absolutely superb band. All albums no matter what anyone else are all fantastic. The new song, There There is out of this world! If you go and see them live, you will then see just how good they really are!
Rovermatt Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 I borrowed the new Roots album, Phrenology, from a friend. It really is superb and a greatly tempers the sort of bullsh*t 'bling-bling' Rap/Hip-Hop that is seeping into the music industry from across the pond.
Radagast Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 What gets me about Radiohead is the astounding arrogance of a lot of their fans. All other forms of music are looked down upon for not being "real" enough. I once heard the excuse that Kid A was terrible because "probably the best guitarist in the world started playing keyboard"
colin Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 Currently listening to a blast from the past: The Mothers Of Invention's "We're Only In It For The Money." 1967 What's the ugliest part of your body?
Simon Says Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Bought Hail to the thief by Radiohead today. Although it is something of a return to form, it is nowhere near the majesty that was The Bends. Will they ever return to such high standards?
Tarka Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 My recent and successful discovery has been Hooverphonic, a Belgian trip-hop/trip-pop band. Their first two albums are very good. Their third and last album I can't comment on since I haven't got it yet.
den Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 a Belgian trip-hop/trip-pop band. Christ, we've come a long way since Lonnie Donnegan.

Will they ever return to such high standards? Return to Form, they never dipped in my opinion. It is almost impossible to top 2 of the greatest albums of all time (The Bends and O.K. Computer).

stegraham Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Anyone got the new Metallica albume yet? Views? It's the first Meticalla I've bought since Meticalla (the black one) back in the early 1990s. I like it - I think. Some of the riffs are mean as f**k. However, the song lengths are similiar to the ones on "...and justice for all", abit too long really. It also reminds me of the old straight-edge bands like Decendance Within with the stop/start business. If the songs had been a bit shorter, and they had stuck a few solos in, it would have been much better. 3/5 I reckon. Ste :-)
